14 Month Old Screaming in the Middle of the Night

Hi moms!

My 14 month old has never been a good sleeper, however, she is somewhat starting to sleep througout the night, but there is still a problem... on most nights, she wakes from her sleep, screaming at the top of her lungs, stands at her crib and wails for a few minutes, then puts herself back to sleep. At first I thought she might be having some sort of night terrors or nightmares, but it happens far too often. Anyone have experience, insight or ideas as to why this may be happening?

Thanks for your help!

My 13 month old has this from time to time as well...My husband & I noticed that it usually happens when she is hitting a developemental milestone (ie : learning to sit up/learning to roll over/learning to stand/learning to walk). They usually only last for about 5 days or so, then she's back to normal (until the NEXT milestone, that is! lol).

That does sound like sleep terrors to me. My son started having them at 9 months, and it took me until now to be fully convinced that that's what they were. Here are my son's biggest triggers: Not getting enough sleep and teething and/or other sickness. My son used to get them around the same time of night, like between 2 and 3 hours of first going to sleep. Then as he got older they only occurred during his nap time.

I think as long as she's able to go back to sleep, either way just let it run its course! Of course, it wouldn't hurt to check with your daughter's pediatrician to confirm. Maybe put it on your list of questions/concerns for her 15 month check-up!

T.,
She's scared. She wakes up alone and wants you.
I did the family bed and never regretted it.
We all slept better!

Try going to askdrsers.com.
4 doctors are on that site. All from one family!

They all did the family bed and it worked for them too!

The only way humans survived as a species was with a family bed! It is the most obvious and natural way, if you think about it. Mother Nature has great solutions most of the time...we just forget about that in our search for more "modern" solutions.

Maybe the family bed would work for you too...check the dr. Sears website...

Our dd was doing this and we figured out it was a new toy we introduced. I guess it freaked her out that the Elmo Live doll talked on his own. LOL She was only 11 months old, but it could be something similar. Just an idea, anything new introduced lately?

Good Afternoon T.,

You may want to consider that food allergies are the cause of your child's disturbed sleep. Sometimes food allergies can cause disturbing dreams and interrupted sleep. NAET.com is a group of allergists who eliminate allergies. You can log onto their website and find an allergist in your area. Also, two books from Amazon.com, Say Goodbye to Illness by Dr. Nambudripad and Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Balch, are both great for learning about allergies and the physical problems caused by allergies, and what the body needs to be healthy on a daily basis.

Be Well.

Hi T.,
Sounds like night terrors. My son had it, unfortunately it lasted a few years and happened 4-5 times a week. His peditrician recommended he be woken 1-2 hrs after he falls asleep to disrupt his sleep pattern. Also, said it usually happens when children are over-tired or under stress.
Hang in there!

i agree with sh. my daughter did this too. she is prone to night terrors (from my husband). she is also prone to sleep walking because both my hubby and i did this as kids. my daughter did grow out of this so i think its a developemental thing to see if youll come in the room. just play it by ear i know its hard. one night my daughter woke up screaming as if being hurt and i ran to her room and picked her up and its like she was looking around but not at me as i was talking to her. i just kept telling her calmly mama is here your ok. then she calmed down and was quiet. i believe she was asleep the whole time. good luck

Sounds like Night Terrors. This is the age for it.
Yes, it can happen every night. My kids did that too.
Did you look up night terrors online?

Does your baby nap during the day? Over-tired or over-stimulated kids, can be more prone to night terrors as well.

If anything ask your Pediatrician.

I am beginning a series on sleep problems on my sleep blog... www.lullabyluna.com... night terrors (which is what is sounds like to me from your description, her age, and her ability to just go back to sleep) and nightmares will be covered... If you subscribe you will just get the posts sent to you... otherwise check on Thursdays for the newest post in the series.

That is good that she puts herself back to sleep- a characteristic of night terrors... in my research I haven't read anything about it not being night terrors if it happens often...
