14 Month Old Coughing

My boy was sick a month ago. He's over with it but he still coughs at night. We brought him so many doctors for his coughing, but none of the doctors at his clinic gave him a specific medicine for his coughing. We spent a lot of money for doctor's visits and RXs. If you have a child with the same problem, how did/do you do it? Do you know any best children doctors in the Twin Cicitis because I am thinking about changing to a different doctor for my son? My son went to South Lake Pediatrics. Thank you so much in advance for your anwers.

What can I do next?

How bad is his cough?

My daughter just had h1n1 flu..lots of fun! She had coughing fits that were intense with gasping for air. Dr. thought it was bronchitis with ashtma attacks. So my dd is on a steroid predisolone (can't spell) right now along with a nebulizer with albuterol and it's finally helping. The steroid is AMAZING.

Maybe you son has ashtma? Have you tried taking him outside in the cool moist air, or steam up the bathroom? Maybe that will work. I know kids under 2 can't have cough syrup.

You do NOT need a medicine for every symptom. It is MUCH better if his body can heal on his own. Sometimes it takes awhile for symptoms, like a cough, to go away. Healthy food, kid appropriate exercise (Like climbing around the park, or playing hide'n'seek at home), and lots of good sleep go a long way in healing his body. Good Luck, I hope he gets better.

Hi, I'm a pharmacist. I'm guessing the response with the chewable pill is Singulair NOT Advair. Advair is an inhaler for asthma and Singulair is a leukotriene inhibitor used for asthma or allergies. It comes in a chewable pill for kids. I myself have reactive airway and I develop a lingering cough for a month or 2 after a bad upper respiratory cold. Yes, this COULD be the case, it COULD be allergies, it COULD be a lot of things. There are a lot of colds and flu going around and sometimes it takes a long time to get over these things especially when you're a little guy....I have a 15 month old and we are getting over the flu as I type this!! Try a vaporizer/humidifier at night in his room. It seems to be helping my little guy with his cough. Reflux is another cause of chronic cough but is most likely not the case in your situation. As far as great doctors in the Twin Cities area, I absolutely LOVE Southdale Pediatrics. All the of doctors I have been to there are great...we go to the one in Eden Prairie. We have seen Dr. LeFevre, Dr. Lawler, Dr. Laville, and Lisa Kroening. I've filled their scripts for years in practice and they are just terrific doctors!!! They also have an allergy clinic there. Don't stress :) Good luck!!!

My son had the same symptoms. He'd get a cold or seasonal allergies, and get over it except at night-- he'd cough and cough. Our doc diagnosed him with reactive airways, basically mild asthma. His air passages "react" to irritants. He prescribed advair, which comes in a chewable pill my son finds tasty. When he has a flair up, I give him his daily pill until it goes away, usually a week or so. It's nice because he doesn't have to take it all the time.
