Hi: Your child is 13. H/she should have plenty of ideas. Get her/him involved in the decision - S/he can do research, talk to friends, etc. A great way to get a child to start thinking, empowering them, etc. This will make the party a LOT more meaningful.

We had a 13th bday with a DJ, dance, dance competition, prizes, food etc. They loved it.

We even did it again for the end of the year it was so popular.

I know your child may seem so young to you still but carnival is going to seem quite juvenile to them and their friends unless you do it big and go allll out. I work with middle schoolers on a regular basis. If you decide to do carnival I would suggest using games where they can earn tickets at different games, such as popping balloons with darts, fish bowl w/ping pong balls, corn hole, etc and they can turn the tickets in to pie (whip cream) either friends or even funnier, you, in the face, a dunk booth, and games of that nature

My 13 year old sister had a birthday party where we rented a Wii and some games like Rock Band and American Idol so they could all do karaoke. It was fun because we awarded prizes like "Best Singer" "Best Duet" "Best Imitation of a Rock Star" etc. so the kids really got into it. They were able to sing, play instruments, dance, talk, eat, drink, and just have fun and I think they all really enjoyed it.

Recently had a fair in my arae and the pre-teens/teens seemed to have loved it, so carnival is a great them! They also like the dance party and roller disco themes. If it's just girls do a spa day if you haven't done that already.

Well since your childs friends are coming i would try to make it as cool as possible. Depending on the crowd such as boys or guys or both would need to be stated. Do you know what the kids are into at that age in your area. You could be the coolest parent or the lamest parent lol. Pretty much what makes my children happy is how i decide on things like that.
