13-Month Old Only Drinking Milk from Bottle, Not Cup

I have a mom friend whose 13-month old daughter will not drink her milk from a cup. She drinks water from a cup just fine, but when its "bottle" time, she'll only drink from her bottle. This mom friend has tried to put her milk in a cup several times, keeping the same routine as usual otherwise (same chair, same time, etc.), but the baby girl will take a sip, find out it's milk, and then just won't drink it! She'll just sit there and play with the cup. Has anyone had this same issue, and how did your baby finally come around to drinking milk from a cup? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I forwarded all your wonderful advice to my friend, who was very thankful. She did try the Nuby cups, which did work (well, only the ones w/o handles). Thank you for that recommendation! She also just stuck to her guns and didn't give in and give her daughter a bottle, which also worked! She said to say thank you for the wonderful advice.

I read that if you cut a very small slit in the nipple and give them the bottle. The next day you cut another slit diagional from the first. You do the same the following 2 days until an X is formed. By them the whole will be to big and they will lose interest in the bottle. Good Luck!

My twins did the same thing, then one day my son started drinking it. It took my daughter a month before she would really drink it. I would supplement her with yogart, cheese, and anything else that had calcium in it. Trust me she will do it sooner or later. You just can't worry about it. One thing for sure is that she doesn't need to go back and forth. Her daughter will not drink milk from the cup if she knows that her mom will give it to her in the bottle. You have to remember she has been drinking milk from a bottle for over a year now, so it's not something that will happen immediately. The biggest thing is that once the mom starts the cup she needs to stick with it, and get rid of all bottles. Nothing is going to happen to her daughter is she doesn't have milk for a little while, trust me she's getting her vitamins in other ways. Try OJ with calcium while she waits. Hope this helps. Good luck, and don't fret!!!

Have you tried using a Nuby cup? The spout is flexible and very similar to a bottle nipple. I used this with my daughter and it worked like a charm. You can get them at Walmart and sometimes Target. If this doesn't work, I wouldn't stress about it. 13 months is still very young. Maybe try again at 15 or 18 months. Good luck!

Tell your friend that my 13 month old is exactly the same!!! I don't really stress out about it, just figure she will start drinking when whe is ready. My daughter also refuses to drink juice from the cup....she will only drink water out of the sippy cup, and is not interested in anything else.

Just give her time and be patient...I am sure they will both be drinking out of cups in no time!

Personally I think people get too caught up in these little things that will eventually work themsleves out. Many other countries have babies drinking out of bottles for the first several years.

I had the same problem...try the born free cup, it will work. More information at www.newbornfree.com They are expensive but worth it in the end. Good luck :)

I didn't have issues with my son taking milk from a sippy, but I know someone who did. Her pediatrician suggested putting a small amount of chocolate syrup in the milk. She didn't do it every time, but the did it times that her daughter was absolutely refusing to drink the milk. Hope this helps.

I went through this with my son (now almost 8, my 6 yo daughter never seemed to have a problem with it, and my 4mo daughter will hopefully never need a bottle). I honestly forget exactly how old he was at the time though.

What I finally had to do was just get rid of all the bottles in the house. Then there was no "giving in" on my part, and he eventually figured out that the milk was just as good in a cup. :P

With that said though, at that age most babies are/should be still nursing. So perhaps the "need to suck" is still there on his part. Is he still very clingy perhaps? Are all other milestones being reached at an appropriate time? You really have to "read" the child to know when they're ready and only then can you help them break their bottle-addiction.
