Hi everyone! I wanted to see if anyone had some ideas. I have a 12 year old daughter who is embarrassed because of sweat. She not only gets wet rings under her armpits on her shirts but it is stinky too. I have tried washing her clothes with white vinegar (read that online) to get the smell out of her shirts but it does not work. She also has not found a deodorant that takes care of it either. Any suggestions for a deodorant/idea for her and also any suggestions on getting the smell out of her shirts? I will try anything at this point! Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi everyone! I was so excited at all the great responses I got to my request! THANK YOU TO ALL! It is SO greatly appreciated. Well, I think we are going to start small and go up. I am going to start with the Secret Clinical Strength (or something like it) and go from there. I plan on talking to her Dr about it the next time we are there if we are still having this problem. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and am hoping for the best. But thank you again everyone - it's so nice to know that you can ask any kind of question here and get responses. It actually takes some of the pressure off!

Hi, I guess my simple suggestion, you've probably already thought of, would be to monitor her diet. Caffeine and a number of other dietary chemicals can cause excessive sweating and a bad odor. Good luck.

Hi there,

I used Secret Clinical Strength when I was pregnant, because I constantly had sweat rings on my shirts. It worked really well. I didn't have an odor problem so I don't know how well that will work.

Hi R.!

I haven't tried the Secret Clinical but I know, for scent, Mitchum works well for my husband and I, it's the only brand that works on our skin/scent type for some reason.

I hope this helps!

Hey R., My sister has the same problem. It could actually be a medical condition. My sister has to take a Rx to control her sweating. Also there is a new deoderant out there, I think from Secret, that is designed for "more severe? sweating. Have you talked with her doctor about it yet?

Poor kid! I feel for her, and went through the same thing. I also have had the problem off & on as an adult. I found that Certain Dri seems to work best, and I only needed to use it for a month or so (applied every night before bed) to start. After that, I seem to only need to use it once or twice a year. Try the over the counter options, and then as others have suggested, check with her doctor if the problem still persists.

As for the link between antiperspirants and breast cancer, the evidence is inconclusive. Both the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society concur on that point. However, it is probably wise to consider not using the products long-term. You might want to do a little research on WebMD or MedlinePlus, just to make an informed decision based on authoritative information.

On the bright side, Hyperhidrosis affects some people on their hands & feet as well as their underarms. So, at least your daughter's problem is localized to a place you would normally apply antiperspirant!

Good luck! Hopefully, along with all the advice, it will help your daughter to know that she isn't alone.

Hi!

I am new to this site, and have actually been deleting every e-mail that pops up on my computer because I haven't had time to even start looking. Something made me read today. My husband was standing next to me and responded when I maid a sad sound as I read this. He asked me what I was sad about. I read your note and he came running over. He had the same problem as a child and sometimes still. He has used the product "Drysol" he got it from his doctor. He hasn't sweat in years. I attached the link the I got when I googled it for you. This saved his life. The only thing I causion you on, is that I know that aluminum is not good for you. So I reccomend researchng this and talking to your doctor. I don't know how much aluminum is in it (it is in most deoderants - but to what degree, I don't know). Also, my husband says he doesn't need to use it all the time, so that is good. Now, he hardly needs any deoderant and rearly uses the Drysol. Good luck! My heart bleeds for your daughter, Please keep me posted. Jen R

Hi R.,I have a ten year old in the same perdicament. So she started to get such a nasty onion odor(like make any one pass out onion)so we tried several deoderants before I figured out the problem. Her idea of putting deoderant on is up and down twice. So there was not enough getting on.I showed her what she was doing wrong and explained to her how you should put plenty on and instead of twice, ten times up and down and since we had our talk she hasn't made anyone want to pass out.Oh and I also packed her a trial size deoderant for school or anyplace else...As for the clothes, tide, fabreeze softener, and dryer sheets did us wonders. And you'll find that the extra deoderant will actually help the odor in the clothes and then they'll always smell good. Then of course when the odor is gone your daughters self esteem will be better. Then of course that will give the other kids no opportunity to pick on her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I hope our method works for you and you child.Goodluck.From C.

I can't help you with the smelly clothes- but I have a sweat suggestion. I use an antipersperant called Certain Dry. I use it twice a week. It works!!!! But I would check with her DR. to make sure it's suitable for a 12 year old. Then follow the directions carefully. I used to get the sweat rings under my pits. Soooo embarassing- for anyone- much less a 12 year old girl. I feel her pain. This stuff works. Check it out.

Hi R.,
i saw a commerical for a deoderant that was especially for this. I cannot remember what it is called but i think it is put out by either dove or suave. She also may have excessive or over active sweat glands that her body produces and is annoying to the person it happens to. I would make an appointment with her doctor to discuss it and i believe they hjave a prescripton forthis problem.it might be a special deoderant. I hope this helps. Goodluck

I had this problem when I was about her age. My mom used to be able to tell if I showered just by my smell. It was totally embarrassing. The one thing I found that really worked was a deodorant called "Certain Dry". I don't have any problems now, but I used Certain dry for at least a year. I also heard that Secret and I believe it is Degree has come out with a "prescription" strength deodorant. I would try these out too. Good luck.

I had a friend as a teen who had this same problem. I think as they get older too and start to shave their underarms makes it a problem too. I would have her see a doctor, I think that would be the best resolution rather than trying all kinds of over the counter products. Maybe even a dermatologist can give her something and recomend deoderants or soaps she should, or should not use.

Hi R.,

Try washing her clothes with Arm & Hammer Laudry Detergent. Or perhaps adding baking soda to the wash. I lived with a guy eons ago who had this problem and that was the only thing we found that got the smell out.

She may have hyperhidrosis, which is an excessive sweat problem. You should take her to a doctor. I know there are some antiperspirants that are over the counter that claim to help curb the sweating. If you go to your local pharmacy and ask them about it they should be able to point you in the right direction. Good Luck!

Hello,

I have seen on tv and read about other people who have the problem with sweating. I can only imagine what your daughter is going through. You might think it's crazy, but botox shots are known to help with the sweating in armpits. I know she is young, but it is something to think about if she is having so many problems. There are also all natural deodorants at places like whole foods and the good seed that may help also. You can also try herbs possibly.

oh man, i remember when i was 11 or 12 and that exact thing happening to me, it was awful and emarrassing. There are new deodorants that are prescription strength (over the counter, try riteaid) that she can try or that her doctor may be able to prescribe. Its only a temporary part of puberty and will probably go away in the next 6 months im sure. Also send her to school with a pack of unscented baby wipes. Before she reapplys her deodorant, she should wipe her pits clean so that shes not layering the deoorant over stinky sweat. The worst thing about it is all of the deodorants that will help (anything with aluminum zinc) are believed to be one of the causes of breast cancer in women. Once her body starts to adjust to the hormones etc. and she stops being so smelly/ sweaty have her switch to a crystal (salt rock) deodorant these worked great for me until i started nursing my youngest when my hormones went crazy! It was like puberty all over again! If it continues, she may have a sweat gland disorder (i highly doubt it though) and can see a specialist, they can botox some of the sweat glands in her pits. Interesting... Good luck!

Hi R.!
I personally don't know a whole lot about this subject, but a friend of mine that I used to work with had it. It is actually a condition. She would only have it under one armpit...which is kind of strange! But she was looking into having it corrected and I believe it is a non-evasive procedure. I would google it or try to look up info. on "Excessive Sweating". No matter what deodorant she used, she would still sweat and yes...it would be stinky:( I also believe the procedure is covered by most insurances. I hope this was helpful and I hope everything I have said was correct! Good luck!

Hi R.,
I suffered with your daughters problem all my life! I am now in my 40's and just discovered an OTC deoderant called Certain Dri. I got it at Walmart, but have seen it at other drugstore chains too. It is used at night before bed. It works wonders!! It made a big change in my life and it will for your daughter too! I also use a regular deoderant during the day, because although it does away with the sweat, there still seems to be a slight odor. Be sure to read the directions - you don't need to use it every night. Goodluck to her!

hi! i would try to take care of the problem verses the symptons......have you spoken with a dr.? i've heard of several options surgery to remove some of the glads, hormone pills and the least invasive is botox for prefusive sweating.
what i would concentrate on is the end effect this will (and does) have on your daughter--the shame and embarassment and go to any length to curb that. my daughter (who is now in her mid 20's) and my best friend growing up had this problem and still suffer psychologically from it.
PS- another option for the smell might be baking soda!
good luck!

Hi R.,
Have you tried the Arrid XX Dry...my husband would get such sweaty armpits before that by the time we got to where we were going he would have the rings around the shirts and that has worked well for him. Just make sure that it has the double XX on it and the orange one which I think is "regular/unscented" works best.
Another one if you haven't tried is this new Secret that they have out which goes for around $7 or $8 and it is called Secret Clinical Strength. I think it actually says on the box that it is "prescription strength" which I know when I bought I said to my husband...."do they have a deodorant you get on a prescription?"
But anyway, the Secret I bought for myself this past summer because you know what I have never had any problems and this past summer it's like my regular deodorant just wouldn't work anymore. So I tried the Secret and it has worked really well...no more stinky bo smell.
Anyway, if you haven't tried those then it's something to try otherwise I would maybe try going to a dermatologist/skin doctor? Maybe they have something for it.
The smell out of the shirts? I have no clue....

To expand on what Jean G wrote:

I use Secret Clinical. I've suffered my entire life with sweating and never found anything that worked. Only a few months ago (I'm now 35) I heard about Secret Clinical and decided to give it a shot. It's a miracle!! I don't even get one bit of sweat under my arms anymore. I swear to you this stuff works. I noticed that Degree has also put out it's own version of Clinical Strength too, though I haven't tried that one. It is a little pricey but I found it is the cheapest at Walgreens for $8.99, plus I've seen coupons for it. Please, please do your daughter a favor and let her try it. I was always so embarrassed growing up about my problem and even more so as an adult. I wished they had put this stuff out years ago, but I'm not complaining now!! It's worth every penny, trust me.

I really don't know how to get the sweat stains out of the clothes, but from personal experience with the sweating only the really expensive stuff works. I have found that only Secret Clinical Strength and now Degree has a Clinical Strength. They both work really well for me.
They only deoderants that work for me. Also talk to her pediatrician she is at that puberty age and maybe it is something hormonal, and something that is easily fixed.
Goodluck!!!
