12 Month Old Waking up in the Middle of the Night

How do I get my daughter who is almost 13 months old to stop waking up 1-2 times a night? I want to get this under control b/c I plan on getting pregnant very soon. It would be horrible to be getting up with a new born every 3 hours plus 1-2 times a night with a 2 year old.

What can I do next?

My daughter did the same thing around the same time. After a few weeks of trying to figure out why she was waking up, I figured out that she just liked being up with me in the middle of the night. I ended up just letting her cry it out one night and that ended her waking in the middle of the night. I just shut her door and ours, turned off the sound on the monitor (I also have a video monitor so I could see her) and turned on our TV to drown out the sound of crying. It took a few hours but she eventually went back to sleep. She has been a sleeping though the night since and she's 27 months old now.

I know how you feel my now 18 month old still wakes up once or twice at night. I have tried lots of diffrent things and only a few worked.

One was buying a Sound Machine and a few musical cds ( bed bath and beyond) to use as a white noice. This also helps me sleep.

Give her a nice warm bath 1 hour befor bed time and make SURE she is not hungry or thirsty. If she is belive me she will wake up!

If all else failes talk it over with your partner to see if he will have the night shift. Expecialy if another baby is on the way. YOU need all the rest you can get having two baby's to care for.
Hope this helps Good luck!

Every child is different and I can tell you, my 2 1/2 year old still gets up once a night, usually to come into our room. I am due in 8 weeks with our 4th. It doesn't bother me because he goes right back to sleep. What does your daughter do when she wakes? Does she want to eat, play, just see you?

I'm sure you are going to get the CIO advice which is NOT something you will get from me. I don't agree with it and believe it teaches children to self soothe not because that's what they need but because they learn to give up that no matter how hard they cry, nobody is coming. Just my opinion.

If anything, when she wakes up, lay her back in bed and tell her it's bedtime. Rub her back. Sing to her. Whatever you can to let her know you are still there as sometimes, I think that's all they want...is to know you didn't go anywhere/nothing happened to you while they were asleep. Maybe she is thirsty. My 2 1/2 year old is like that some nights...take a sippy cup of mostly ice and some water to bed with you so that it can melt over night and still be cold water. When she wakes, take it in with you in case she is thirsty. I still wake for a drink sometimes and I'm 36!! :)

Feed her more at night so her belly's full so she can sleep through the night.

first thing is to determine why he is waking up? And second is to determine what he gets out of waking up? Kids tend to wake when they are teething (6,12, 24, & 36 months), if you address the problem and put them back to sleep with as little interaction as possible, then it is easier on everyone. If you give them lots of attention, feed them, turn on lights, etc, you are making it fun to wake up at night. With any change, it seems to take about a week to get things back in routine, with each night getting a little easier. Be patient and persistent.
I know there are several books that give great suggestions for establishing sleep routines that last all night, but I don't know the titles, sorry.
