Hi everyone,
My 11 month old had a very bad virus about 10 days ago with a fever that lasted for 5 days (peaking at 103.4). Part of the illness was that he had a lot of pain in general and around his mouth/throat in particular, he had a lot of trouble eating and drinking and refused his pacifier. I took him to the doctor a couple of times and was told that it could be coxsackie but they were unsure. This past weekend his fever broke and his eating and drinking is starting to return however he is still not himself at all (his fever broke 5 days ago). My son Alex has always been a very happy baby who loves to laugh and be active but since the illness he has been very quite and serious and not really smiling at all. He is in daycare and went back this week after being out all last week (I stayed home to take care of him) and his carers have also remarked that he is not himself at all and they are worried as well. I have a doctors appointment for him tomorrow but wondered if anyone else has had similar experiences following a bad illness. He doesn't seem to have any physical symptoms of illness anymore. Any advice on how to help him? I love him so much and am so worried!
Thank you all.

This may not be helpful because it doesn't sound like the exact same virus that my son had at 7 mo, but he was sick for about a week and barely ate during that time. It was so scary. I was sure that he was dehydrated so i took him to the doctor but they said he was ok. Even still, for at least 2 weeks following that cold, he wasn't eating normally. He would barely get down 3 bottles a day if that, whereas before he was drinking a minimum of 5-6. I was really worried about him, but one day he just was back to normal. Also, I hope your baby is taking some extra naps. A fever takes a lot out of them.

I pretty much have the same advice as the others- take him to the DR if you feel there is something really wrong, at least for your peace of mind. Other than that. in my own experience, especially if this is your child's first major illness, it may take a while for him to feel like himself again. My son got roseola at 8 months and while the fever was gone in 24 hours, he was very clingy and weepy for at least two weeks afterwards. He also wanted nothing to do with food for about 4 weeks, just nursing with some occassional fruit. My ped said this was normal as did most experienced moms I talked to. Just be sure he is getting plenty of fluids, and if he starts to lose weight get the the DR. Just think, for some one so new with no experience of getting sick, it must be quite frightening for them to feel so horrible and not understand why. Just have some patience and you both will be back to normal soon enough.

Hi J.,

Big hugs to you! It's always hard to see your child sick and not being able to do much.

Do go to the Dr. to have him checked, there might be something else going on, but it might also be benign: when we have been severely ill (remember the last time you had influenza - the real one), we're often weak and listless for quite a few days after the fever has broken. No reason why it would be different for babies and toddlers.

Have the doctor check for Thrush. It can mimic coxsackie with mouth sores. It is very painful making it almost impossible to eat. I am not sure about the high fever with Thrush but just have the doctor check inside his mouth and see if it has cleared up. If not just any virus that had a fever that long could take a while to recover from. I know how hard it is when you have to work but maybe being back in daycare is difficult because he cannot rest like he would at home. Is there anyone else who can stay home with him the rest of the week to give him more time to rest. I own a childcare center and although we try our best to care for babies when they are not well it is difficult with so many other children to care for. I am sure it is noisy and he is not able to rest which is probably what he needs. Getting a recheck is a great idea to rule out any other after effects of the virus. Good luck I hope he feels better. Keep us posted.

No advice for you but sending hugs your way. My oldest grandson has coxsackie and that fever was just awful. Hope everything goes well at the doctor's office and he's back to being himself soon.
