11 Month Old Pooping Too Much!

Help! My daughter, who will be 11 months old next week, has been pooping like crazy for about 4 days now. She will have about 6 - 7 BM's a day, each one filling her diaper to exploding and usually requiring a hose down and a complete outfit change. Other then the pooping and a little congestion she seems fine. She is happy, doesn't have a fever and is eating like crazy. In fact, she's been eating and drinking more then usual. She's on solid foods now and can feed herself. An example of what she has been eating lately is mac n cheese w/ peas and hot dogs, or wagon wheel pasta w/ carrots and chicken. She pretty much eats whatever I feed my 2 year old, sometimes eating more then he does (and he's a big time eater). I tried going back to basics with her and just feeding her rice cereal w/ bananas or oatmeal cereal but she just crys and slaps it away and tries to grab whats on her brother's plate. I've been putting pedialyte in her bottle and juice cup but it doesn't seem to be helping.

She also has a serious diaper rash that no amount of cream seems to cure. I have even tried nystatine cream in case it's a yeast infection but I think her little tush is just so raw from all the poop.

IS it time to take her to the doctor? Could it just be teething? I'm at a loss as to what to do.

One more thing, she has gone from 9 months clothes to 18 months almost overnight. She was in 12 months for about 3 weeks but has been growing so fast she pretty much skipped over that size. I don't know if that has anything to do with it but it could explain why she's so hungry all the time.

What can I do next?

My daughter gets diaper rashes when she has foods that she is not ready for. I don't want to say allergic, because if I stop giving them to her and then start again later in small amounts, she will be fine with them.

Don't know about the BMs! Good luck!!

Triple Paste is the best stuff for a diaper rash, no question. It's expensive, but clears up rashes so quickly it's worth every penny. Also watch the juice... my 14 month old son gets loose poops from pear and apple juice. very dilluted white grape is perfect. Good luck

My son at 8 months was going through the same thing. He was also teething. It seemed like he was going through a pack of pampers a day. Then it just stopped. Maybe it has to do with her teething.

Watch her temperature, temperment, and fluid intake.
If it has only gone on for a few days just give it a few more before you really worry. If you haven't radically changed her diet prior to the pooping, if she doesn't have any blood in it, if she is not overly gassy and uncomfortable, if she still has a healthy appetite and she is well-hydrated, then she is prob just working a bug thru and is fine. Her growth is a phase, kids don't grow as a result of eating alot, just goldfish! Chances are that you have a few different factors going and it seems overwhelming. Sometimes congestion in her nose means it is also running down her throat when she sleeps or she is swallowing it all day. The extra mucus can give them runny poop. She may also be teething too or has a stomach bug. These combined can make for a miserable few days. My son would do the same thing (he has a milk allergy tho) but he ate alot of sand all the time so his diaper rashes were HORRIFYING. I used to put some Calendula ointment on him before putting on the Balmex/etc and it worked like magic. Sit her in a tub with Aveno oatmeal bath to help with the rawness and pat dry before putting the lotions on.
And finally, if she wants to eat it, let her. Sneak a pediatlyte freezer pop in for dessert. The day is coming when she prob will turn up her nose at all the good food you make her!

My son has gone through the same thing somewhat. There was one weekend where he did NOTHING by eat. To our amazement, he was breaking through 3 back teeth. I immediately gave him harder food to eat, like wheat pretzels sticks and wheat thins, while sitting in his highchair. He also had a terrible rash and of course that is from teething. He pooped about 5 times a day for about 1 week and a half. The other day I noticed a 4th tooth popping through.

Now they also go through the growing spurts when all they do is eat.

Regarding your concern of when to take her to the doctor, call their office explain what is going on. They will tell you whether or not bring her in.

Hi J.
I am an odd one perhaps to be on here, but I am a SAHM. I have 4 children, all pretty much grown. The last are twins and they graduate from homeschool high this year. The question to always ask is do you know how to care for your child. If you have no more ideas as to how to help them, then you need a doctor. Sounds like perhaps an allergy to me, but go ask the doctor. Don't wait til children are too sick. Better to be safe than sorry. How would you feel if the MD asked, why didn't you bring him in yesterday? Sometimes the cure when you don't wait is so much simpler. I vote go to MD, whenever that thought crosses your mind.
By the way, I told you my girls are 18, well my boys are 36 and 32 years. That is right, years. My husband and I have been married 38 years. Babies grow up and have babies of their own. Our younger son & his wife are having our first grandchild this summer. God bless you.

If you are giving her any juice at all, stop. Take all sugar out of her diet too. Sugary foods cause poopy problems. You should also get her in to see a doc as soon as possible. It's not normal to bm's that many times a day for so long. You should also consider cutting back on her food. She doesn't need to eat as much as your 2.5 yr old. That's way too much for her. Also, if you have her on milk already you may consider going back to the formula. That could also be causing the problem. Her body might not be ready for it yet. Good luck. I hope it's nothing serious.

I can't really comment on the food questions (my LO is only 6 weeks), but as far as the rash is concerned, I would ask what kind of diaper cream you're using. If you're using a zinc oxide cream, I would discontinue use - it's harder to clean off their bottoms, which results in more swipes with a wipe and more irritation. Switch to a clear cream like A&D or petroleum jelly which makes the poop stick less - apply it generously and the poop should come right off. Also, I found that using wipes irritates too - our pedi suggested using soft wet paper towels.

Good luck!

It sounds like she is going through a growth spurt, which makes them a bit hungry. Pair that with a desire to explore new food experiences, and there you have it. Lots of runny poop. My son had trouble adjusting to whole milk products and we had to slowely reintroduce it several times before he could finally tolorate it, it caused the same problems as what you are experiencing.

Sometimes children will have unsatisfied appitites if they are missing a nutient in their diet. At her age, I would ask the ped for a recommendation for a liquid supplement, maybe that will help.

If you feel that her rump is just raw from pooping, I would do these two things --- put about a 1/4 of a cup of baking soda in her bathwater at night, mix it up so it completely dissolves - it will help clear up the redness right away. Also, we kept a big jar of Aquaphor around the house, and when my son had a red rump, we used it generously instead of diaper cream. It wipes off easily (so there is no pulling on the skin) and the it is infused with air, so it promotes healing. Both of those should get her bottom to feel much better soon.

#1) my daughter had a bad diaper rash that seemed was untreatable, but what I found worked ( and SWEAR by it now) is AVENO. I would wipe her down and plaster her bottom with it and within a day of using it her bottom was 10 times better, now that they are older I give them a bath with it when they have rashes. And when it cleared up to prevent it from coming back so bad I would put desitin in the palm of my hand and Vasoline and mix it together and then put it on her ( it's hard to wipe off you might have to use more wipies than normal, but the mixture 2gether stop any acid getting to her skin)

#2) As far as her pooping a lot it sounds like she's eating healthy and therefore passing it out. The only thing I could come up with is maybe she is lactose intolerant. My youngest daughter was that way when she drank her formula, so I had to switch to Soy formula, but she out grew it when it came time to transition her to "people" food. Now me on the other hand I can drink 2% milk, and eat cheese but when it comes to ice cream my stomach kills me, so there are different "levels" of lactose intolerence. If that is the case you will notice a pattern ( ex: if she has cheese during the day and poops ALOT, but the next day she doesn't have cheese she might poop 1/2 as much). If your "mommy" alarm is still going off about this talk to her Doctor about it. Hope I have helped a little bit. Good luck

Hi J.,

I would suggest you try Probiotics. It is available in Health food stores and some grocery stores. My now almost 3yr old had loose explosive stools for over a month when he was 18mths old. His rear became so raw we had to put gauze on the area after we applied a 1/2 inch layer of creme and then the diaper on top. We saw 7 of the 8 peds in our (old) office. Each time they said no dehydration just change him more often. Finally the last one suggested the probiotics, cleared everything up in less than a week.
Now we add a little to his drinks anytime the stool gets a little loose. Works like a charm!
Good luck

My 9 month old just had a check up and is wearing 18 month old clothing, the doctor said his growth is where it should be no need for concerns and the weight is 21 lbs.

For the RASH I would take the baby to the doctor my son had a bad rash and I like yourself changed him frequently however he did have a yeast infection and was given Vision and it went away, it took a day but it was great. The first perscription that was given which I can't remember the name did not work, ask for Vision it should work. The doctor should know what it is. In the summer I would use cornstarch to keep it dry.
Good Luck. :)

Ow, your little one must be so sore!

Well, you seem to have investigated the possibility of being sick - lack of fever doesn't always mean everything, but better to have no fever! This may be a version of the rotavirus (sp?) or just a growth spurt. IANAD. In my limited experience with toddlers, a spike in eating habits usually precedes a growth spurt (and it is fun to look for the signs when I see them next!) Good that you are trying to get her to take liquids, too. What about mixing rice cereal in with the food she is eating?

I am not a doctor, but this is what worked for us:

This may seem complicated and time consuming, but once you get used to it, your diapering times will shorten and her bottom will clear up.

Diaper rash - what helped my little boy was a 'recipe' from his pediatrician: Stomahesive powder (have to order but OTC, I believe), Triple paste, and powder top.

First, pat wash the bottom (discontinue any wipes, too, at least for a little while. Wash with a soft washcloth with only water.

Then, dry it. I realize you have only a little amount of time before the next diaper, but this is important.

Stomahesive powder - expensive, but it keeps the rash from weeping off any of the triple paste, which allows the bottom to heal. It blows on, and if you are not used to it, you'll get a lot when you only need to cover the rash itself (where the skin is open). CVS (or probably any pharmacy) can order this for you. (It's a surgical item usually, so the pharmacist wanted to know what I was going to do with it! :)

Next, Triple paste - *like cupcake frosting* Sounds a bit much, but that was what did it. Anytime we put on less, it didn't take. Not fun for him. Cheapest place for Triple paste was CVS again (didn't check Rite Aid or others, not local) and at that, the pound jar was most economical.

Then - cornstarch powder (no talcum) - over the top, to keep it from sticking to the diaper. (be careful patting your baby's bottom - if you use too much powder, you'll get a dust cloud!) (WalMart has the lowest on this one).

Well, my little ray of sunshine just woke, so I hope this helps your little girl!

Was thinking to get bloodwork or cheek swab (DNA test from Kimball Genetics - non invasive) for CELIAC disease. BUT then you state she is growing like mad.......... CELIAC is a gluten intolerance (wagon wheels...) and then failure to thrive with GI problems all mixed together. I think weight loss would be a big indicator. BUT might be good to rule it out by talking to Dr. about entire situation and mentioning Celiac as most docs do not test or look for it that often. Good luck and hope it's just a huge growth spurt. All the best, L.

hi! my son went through the same thing a few weeks ago. he's 15 months. after a week of it, complete blowouts & rash(which he never has had a diaper rash before) - i called the doctor & they said it's probably an intestional virus. no other symptoms, he seemed completly fine & was eating as usual. they said to let it run it's course but call if there are any changes. after about another week it stopped. i just constantly kept a&d on him at all times to protect his skin from the harsh poop and the rash didn't get worse & eventually went away. but given the fact that your daughter's rash hasn't gone away no matter what you use leads me to think it could be a yeast infection & may need something stronger that you aren't usuing, call your doctor & have her seen so they can determine if it's a yeast infection or not asap. good luck!

Please take her to a doctor as soon as possible. This is not something you can figure out by yourself. Do not depend on other mother's advice for this problem.

As far as her diaper rash, try Lazaars Paste. Ask the pharmacist to order it for you because most drugstores do not have it in stock. You do not need a perscription for it. It's much stronger than desitin. It's much more expensive, but if you look on the label for the manufacturers name you can contact them and they will send it to you through the mail at a much lower cost. We used this on my grandsons and had good success, but they just had a basic diaper rash, they did not have the other complications you write about. There is something in the poop that is causing such a bad rash. Good luck, Grandma in Westchester

She is eating a lot so she is pooping a lot. It sounds to me as if she is going through a growth spurt. My kids have gone through similar. Soak her bottom in a nice warm tub, don't use wipes, just washclothes & water to cleanse her at changings, and if the nystatin isn't working it probably is not a yeast infection so just lube her up with whatever ointment you prefer.

I wouldn't worry too much. Congestion can also lead to poops becoming messier than normal because the mucus that doesn't get wiped from a tissue or sucked out with a bulb goes into her belly and into the poop. HTH!

I'd definitely take her to the doctor. The diaper rash might be an indication of a food allergy. Obviously eating more means pooping more, and growing means more eating, but this kind of change should be noted by the pediatrician. It may just be a growth spurt, but even so, you should get advice on the rash, and make sure she's getting the right nutrition.

I'm not a doctor but my guess is that she may just be eating too much for her young, immature stomach to handle. Maybe smaller meals with a bit more frequency might help? Something like 5 small meals a day rather than 3 big ones. This way, it gives her stomach time to digest her food before her next meal time. Also, maybe try to lessen the types of food she's eating and keep a log. Maybe she's allergic to a certain food but it's hard to tell what it is at the moment. I'm sure the diaper rash is coming from the frequent bowel movements. Call your pediatrician and ask for his opinion on this. That's what they are there for. Good luck!

hi J.,

wow, it certainly sounds like she is going through a growing spurt! (She is probably sleeping more during this time too -- when she is not eating that is <smile). When my oldest was 11, he grew an inch every month -- and a full shoe size bigger each half year ... thank goodness he slowed down! Now he is 16, 6'2", with size 15 feet!

Please do not take this the wrong way... I believe a contributing factor to the massive waste is that there seems to be a lack of nutrition in some of the food you are giving the kids ...

mac, cheese, peas, hot dogs -- the best thing in this batch is peas -- maybe the macaroni is good but I doubt it if it is the bleached processed stuff in the mac'n cheese box ...

We eliminate what our bodies have no use for ... a healthier diet means less waste. I know that organic food is more expensive than the standard stuff in the store -- but it is so much better for you!

Now that I am doing better financially, I even feed my animals organic food -- what a difference! We have a cat and a dog. They eat less and definitely poop a LOT less! I found that our dog will even eat salad as long as I put dressing on it. She eats vegetables and, of course, meat and eggs. When she was on the cheap dog food, our dog had started to developed a hazy film on her eyes -- and, with a better diet, this has gone away too.

Your kids are used to eating what you have been giving them, but if you change what you are giving them, they will get used to that too. Explain to your 2-year old that you need to get the baby on a healthier diet and she wants what he has, so you need him to set a good example for her.

Whenever I make spaghetti, I put some sauce in the blender with a bunch of veggies (carrots, onions, garlic, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, whatever I have) and mix it up -- the kids never even know all those veggies are there! ... plus it thickens the sauce so nicely and gives it really good flavor.

No one should eat more than 2 hot dogs/month (because of all the bad chemicals they contain) -- and even that is too much according to some.

We buy rice, beans, and pasta in 25 lb bags from a food co-op. We buy almost everything in bulk and try to eat a lot of organic foods. To find a co-op buying club near you, go to this link:

http://www.unitedbuyingclubs.com/RESOURCES/FABC/FABC_Home...

I am sure there are others, but this is the one we use and I see they are in NJ too.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hope you are not offended, I have learned so much about nutrition in the past years ... used to have awful eating habits -- then I had the happy fortune to have landlords that are both Naturopath Doctors and they have educated me <smile>
Good luck, J.
Warm Regards,
C.
Seems like she's going through a major growth spurt, It might be worth a phone call to the doctor just to keep him/her in the loop, but doesn't seem like something to worry about just yet. Keep feeding her what she wants and let her determine when she's done eating. After a few more weeks, if she doesn't slow down and starts to put on an abnormal amount of weight for her height, find a specialist pronto. I've known kids and a few adults that just don't seem to have an off button when it comes to feeling full. It can be a learned feeling.
Regarding the diaper rash - it needs to dry out. Messy as it might be, she needs to spend a day without anything on her bottom. This happened to my daughter many years ago. She had diahrea (sp?) I covered the floor of her room with old sheets and just let her play. I spent a lot of the day cleaning up squirts. I covered her crib with an old sheet too and let her nap without a diaper. Lay off the creams for the day too, except maybe a little A&D to help with the rawness. Don't use commercial wipes - stock up on some cheap washclothes or cut up an old towel and just wash her with warm water and dry her really well. If you can get through the day, when you diaper her that night, line her disposable diaper with a liner designed for cloth diapers to keep her really dry through the night. The rash should be much better the next day. If not and she still seems to be suffering, time for the doctor.
PS. My daughter (who is 15)still loves to hear this story, especially about the projectile poops with flying whole peas.
I wonder if the juice and pedialyte are affecting her poop; they will certainly contribute to weight gain. Even if she is unhappy about it, try the BRATT diet--bananas, rice, applesauce, toast (she probably won't go for the tea). All bland foods to bulk up her BM. Even if she doesn't want it, don't give her another option. If that means she and her brother eat at different times, or he also gets the BRATT diet for a few days, than so be it.
But I would certainly get her in to the ped ASAP--weight gain and appetite like that could indicate an endocrine problem, and the diaper rash could get infected, or already be infected. Good luck!
Poor baby...man, can you imagine how that must hurt. :( I hate when my little one gets those bad rashes.
You got lots of good advice already, but I wanted to second one of the responses...the woman wrote about probiotics. I use acidopholis and you can get it at the vitamin shoppe...they actually have a kids one it's called "primadopholis" I think. You can mix it in water or juice or something and it's really good because it adds healthy bacteria to the digestive tract and eliminates diareah and yeast infections. I give it to my kids and it always helps!! Also cut out anything citrus for the moment, juice, sugary stuff, etc. It WILL help!!
