10 Weeks Pregnant and Having Surgery

Help! I am 10-weeks pregnant and having to have surgery. I'm scared for obvious reasons, but wondering if any moms out there have been through this. I have a hernia in my belly button from my previous pregnancy, and the other night it became "emergent" so now I am having surgery to repair it and prevent a more serious complication. I guess I just want to hear that someone else has had surgery while pregnant (they are doing a spinal block in lieu of general anesthesia) and the result was positive for mom and baby!

What can I do next?

I had surgery to remove a soft ball sized ovarian cyst when I was around 16 weeks pregnant with my little boy. It is really scary. My OB and perinatologist waited until I was past the first trimester to minimize the risk of miscarriage and I was given an epidural because it was safer than general anesthesia. Since you are going to be awake like I was, ask for an anesthesiologist with a great bedside manner to help put you at ease and relax you. I had Dr. Nagamma Kilaru who came highly recommended and loved her. I loved her so much that I requested her when I had my next two c-sections. She helped to explain what I was feeling and to relax me and reassure me that my baby would be fine. Ask them if they will do an ultrasound after the surgery so that you can see that the baby is fine and to put your mind at ease. I delivered a healthy, full term active little boy who is now 2.5 years old.

My SIL had an apendectomy while pregnant. Her nearly 4-year-old son is healthy as a horse as is she!! They took extra-special care of her and everything went splendidly!

I had surgery at 13 weeks. I know it is terrifying! Everything went great. They are so cautious when you are pregnant, and I am certain they will take extra measures to make sure you are both safe.

I will certainly be praying for you. Please let us know how it goes, and feel free to contact me if you need to talk or have any questions.

I didn't have surgery while I was pregnant, but I thought you might feel better knowing that I had the same surgery years ago and it is a snap. You will be up and around in no time. It was the first surgery I had ever had, so I was very nervous, but there were no problems and I was out of the hospital in a few hours.

I had somewhat minor surgery when I was a little over 9 weeks pregnant. My heart rate had sky rocketed to 160 and they had to go in through a vein in my leg and cauterize a small section in my heart to bring my heart rate down. I did it with only local anesthesia. I just made it clear to them at the outset that I want them to do whatever was best for my baby, and if that meant omitting pain medicine or whatever else then that's what I'll do. It brought my heart rate down safely and my little guy is here now, and doing fabulous. Good luck to you!
