Two weeks ago my 10 months old baby have a fever, but now the fever is gone and she started to cough at night. Should we go for a doctor or is there any way we can help her to get better?

What can I do next?

I use Infant Vapor rub on her chest and bottom of her feet and she doesn't cough all night. I started doing this when my daughter was 8 months old. It even helped with Croup, but mainly I use it for allergy/asthma coughing or the common cold. Putting it on the feet is a lot more effective- it even works for adults.

Honey is wonderful to soothe a cough.

But it isn't recommended for babies under 12 months-- when she's a little older, you can add a couple teaspoons to a warm bottle of milk before bed.

I vote for the vaporizer - make sure it's the cool mist type - we bought one made by Vicks that has a little slot to stick a vicks treated pad to give a faint eucalyptus scent to the vapor. Also, Johnsons baby wash makes a body wash that smells like eucalytptus & menthol which seems to help in a warm bath before bed. I run the shower on full blast hot first to get it steamy then fill up the bath with the vapor stuff- it makes a nice bubble bath which makes my son cheer up. ( I do rinse him with clear water before I take him out of the bath to get all the bubbles off) And you can get baby strength vapor rub for the chest. Put a rolled up towel under the head of the mattress to help breathing and allow mucus to drain naturally.
My mom always put Carmex under our noses when we were stuffed up - it helps open the passages a little and protects the skin from the constant dripping and wiping. My son prefers plain Chapstick - but it still helps with the redness.

Use a cool mist humidifier in her room at night. You can also turn on the shower, run it hot, close the bathroom door, and hold your daughter in the steamy bathroom for 15 minutes before bedtime. You might also want to prop her crib up by putting a wedge under the mattress. I remember being amazed at how long colds last in young children. Of course, it never hurts to give the pediatrician a call. Given that the fever is gone, I think it's unlikely she has a bacterial infection, but I am not a doc. Pediatricians expect to get these kinds of calls, and you should never hesitate to follow your instincts if they say, "Call the doc!" If nothing else, I'm sure you can speak to a nurse at the doc's office who can then advise you on what to do and whether to come in.

Hi T.,

Looks like the advise thus far has been right on. Your doctor will probably tell you everything is fine but I'm big on peace of mind so if you are feeling worried...just call. I'd like to add that playing or being rocked/nursed whatever to sleep in a bathroom that has a ton of steam in it will really help to loosen anything that needs loosening.

Sometimes they are just working through the end of a cold and the cough can be the last thing to go. Sorry your little sweetie is sick.

get yourself a humidifier, keep at least 4 feet from the crib. Helps tremendously with nighttime coughing.

Call the doctor and see what they want you to do. DO NOT give your baby anything to supress the cough!! Doing this can cause them to get pneumonia which can be very dangerous for a young baby. When my son got sick and had a very bad cough I called to ask what I could give him and they said nothing. They do not want babies to have cough meds. Believe me, I wanted to give me son something to help him 'cause he couldn't sleep he was coughing so bad. I ended up taking him in and they put him on 2 inhalers. Even without supressing his cough, he ended up with bronchiolitis (sp?). ALWAYS call the doctor when your little one is sick before you give them anything... better safe than sorry. Good Luck.

coughs can take up to 4 weeks (!) to go away. As others suggested, it just depends on the severity and kind of cough when you decide whether it warrants a doctor visit!

Before bedtime, steam up the bathroom and then give baby a warm bath with a little eucalyptus oil or menthol in the water (California Baby makes a nice cold/flu formula bubble bath). It may help to change her sleep position; try sleeping her on her side, and maybe elevate her head and chest ever so slightly so the fluid can drain. Same as with a runny nose.

From my experience (my son gets pneumonia yearly due to weak lungs) if the cough is keeping the baby awake at night and if you look at the baby's belly during the coughing and the belly is sucking in get the baby to the doctor.

My son is 1 year and started coughing at night when we were using the sir conditioner a lot I brought in the cool air humidifier and that seemed to help. I have noticed it has started up again but we are not using the air as it has cooled down at night. But he is drooling more so I believe he is getting more teeth, more teeth more drool, more coughing.
Try a humidifier and check for teeth

Hi T.,
Something that I have found that works for my little one when she's coughing is this. Before bed, rub the bottom of her feet with Vicks Vaporub. Then either put footy pajamas or socks on her to go to bed. So far, every time my daughter has been coughing, it has seemed to work at taking her cough away.

Good luck, B.

I would call the doc and just let her/him know and give details of the cough or look at a homeopathic remedy. You might try a humidifier if it is a dry cough. The cold season is here, may it be a healthy one for you and your family.

Good idea to check in with the doc. Questions are free.
Last June,I had two students, who had pneumonia and no one knew for weeks. They had coughs, but didn't see overly tired.

I know that my kids' pediatrician likes to see them if they've had a persistant cough lasting more than 2 weeks. He could have post-nasal drip, mine had that problem and he ended up having a sinus infection. I'd call the doctor and see what they recommend.

I would do both suggestions- tell you dr, do what Jennifer said, and look into homeopathic remedies. And just take note on if it gets worse or better and what might have moved it along in either direction.
