Ok, my baby girl still does not sleep through the night, so I change her diaper at least once or twice in the middle of the night. She is not sick, has not changed her eating habits or anything out of the ordinary, but for the past week I have been waking up to her covered in poop!!! She has filled up a diaper and it has soaked through her diaper and clothes and onto her sheets. Then she plays in it and gets it EVERYWHERE!!!! She is in a size three diaper which fits her perfectly, but why is it not holding? We have tried every kind of diaper except the overnight ones, which i am seriously considering. She wears Pampers right now which are fine through the day, but why do they not hold at night? What can I do to prevent this? It's exhausting. Should I try the overnight diapers? I mean, I just find it hard to belivee that I am spending 25-30 dollars on a box of diapers and she gets a fresh one around 5am and by 9am, she is soaked in her own poop. Please help

What can I do next?

You may think that a size 3 is the right size, but chances are she needs a 4. Diaper sizes aren't just relative to size of the baby, but also to the amount they will hold and their absorbancy. My daughter was in a size 4 at that age, and has been in a size 5 since at least 14 months. She's not a large baby, by any means....tall, maybe, but not overweight.

Also, I use Luvs...much cheaper, and I've never had a leakage problem unless it was dietary related.

few things: if you're desperate and nothing else works, try a cloth diaper. We cloth diapered the last two and I kno most mamas are SO hesitant to try them, but I seriously NEVER had a blowout of any kind in our BumGenius 3.0's & 4.0's pocket diapers. I highly recommend them. If she's a heavy wetter overnight, hemp inserts are amazing.

Absolutely try overnights - I'm surprised you havent! waking up 2x/night to change a dipe is NOT normal.

If she is pooping so much it's exploding everywhere - consider food allergies. We lived with 8 months of explosive poop and MANY invasive and noninvasive tests before I demanded an allergy panel be done. Our pediatrician insisted children under 2 couldn't have food allergies, but our allergist determined our DD was allergic to every nut out there. Once we cut out her daily snack of animal crackers (which are processed with peanuts), the defecation issues stopped immediately. Is it possible this is a similar issue?

good luck! :)

my 1 year old had this same problem starting at 8 months. Its not the diapers issue. Its just that they are playing and sitting in it for a period of time that the activity works the poop out the top part of the diaper or leg. Especially if its a wetter poop. Unless your right there to clean them the minute they do it and they are not sitting in it for more than 5 there isnt much you can do. In my sons case, he likes to sleep on his tummy and elbows, with his butt sticking up in the air. I have resorted to buying a bunch of cheap crib sheets, putting a catch sheet under it to keep the mattress clean. I dont put any clothes on him save a diaper, I keep many extra blankets around, I give him 2 blankets. Though he is needing a bath everyday it saves my sanity of having to get the disgusting clothes off him. He still does it occasionally at night and he is 1 now. So I am hoping it ends soon. He is in size 3 as well and I tried 4 and 5's it doesnt help.

EDIT AND ADDITION: I love Luvs. I have tried Pampers, Huggies, they suck for my son. Not for every child though, but for my son they do not work worth, well- a poo. Luvs can take like 3 pees and a poop before a change in a pinch LOL. Cheaper too and thinner. They are not bulky like Huggies and Pampers. Though they are not soft the are more papery. My oldest couldnt handle Luvs on her skin she was a Pamper girl.

Poor mama! I think we all went through a week or so (or more!) of this. You not only spend alot of money on diapers, but jugs and jugs of laundry soap as well. I can't tell you how many cribsheets and clothes I threw out just b/c I was sick of washing them. I think I might have thrown a few in the fireplace too...but those days of no sleep are very hazy for me.

The only thing that worked for me was putting my kid in footy pjs. At that age he didn't know how to unzip them and so if he had a poop he never had a chance to play with it. He is like your child...he never cried when he had a poop, he just wanted to play with it and make poop art I guess.

Try the nighttime diapers. We use the LUVS or huggies brand, they work fine. Are you feeding her at night? That might prompt the early morning BMs.

Consider sleep training, perhaps if she had a full night's rest, the digestion would slow right along with it.

Good luck to you.

I found that huggies hold the best. Or Walmarts parents choice are actually a very close second. Better then pampers.
Is her poop runny like diarrhea? She may need a pro-biotic for a few days. Ask the pharamcist. I had to give one to my one year old.

Go up a size and get an overnight diaper to start. The rubber diaper sounds like a good idea but I haven't tried it. Also, layer the sheets and waterproof mattress pads so you can just pull of the top ones when they get dirty. Huggies overnights work well for my daughter who is almost 3 but small (26 lbs). You could try a onesie and a sleep sack if your baby is getting into the diaper and playing with the poop...otherwise it might just be extra laundry. My kids sometimes get in a routine of pooping right after getting a bottle in the morning or even first thing when they wake up. I hate to tell you to stay up longer at 5 am but you might try staying up a little while (maybe 15 minutes) after the bottle and see if she is pooping then and you can just change her and put her back down clean.

I had another thought. Maybe you can adjust her schedule so you get less night time wake ups or at least you eliminate the one at 5 am. When my kids were tiny I woke them up for a feeding before I went to bed and it helped in getting a longer stretch of sleep. Both of mine were sleeping through the night by a year that way (but they were on formula so it may take longer for a breast fed baby).

2 things:

1) Start a daily probiotic for her - safe enough to take twice per day if you buy the one for kids. We use Florastor for Kids - my pediatrician recommended it. It comes in powder form and you can mix it into applesauce or something she drinks. Just note that the only liquid it really dissolves well into is either juice (the acid helps dissolve it) or into a warm liquid. So applesauce or yogurt is really the best way. Also you can buy a baby yogurt with probiotic already in it.

2) invest in some rubber diaper covers...they are used more with cloth diapers but you can put them over a regular diaper...and yes switch to the overnights, possibly even in a bigger size so it will hold more and give her more coverage for the nighttime.

Our 17-month old is having a similar issue presently but with pee. She is having pee blowouts probably 3-4 days a week but only overnight, not at nap time. We have started to cut her off from fluids after a certain hour and that didn't help a whole lot either. we know she is peeing right before bed time (in the tub usually heehee!) so that isn't the issue. What we tried last night was to bump up her diaper size. We are finishing out our size 3's and had a bag of 4's someone had given us so we tried that and WALAH! No leak this a.m. We are going to give it a few more nights to see if it really was a diaper issue. If not, then we are back to square one. I love the idea of the plastic cover ones used with cloth diapers. Might be an idea after trying the yogurt (another great idea!)
