My DS is now 1 years old. I have been breastfeeding him full time until 2 months ago when I started weaning him off feedings. The problem is if I dont bf, he doesnt drink milk. I tried different bottles (avent, playtex, breastflow, etc) because I thought it might be nipple confusion. I also tried cups, sippy cups, straw cups, etc and still he will not drink from them. Just to get him to take 2 oz takes a lot of time. I also tried different brands of formula. When he takes a sip, his face has this funny look. I would really like to wean off but how can I do that when he won't take milk? By the way, when I breastfeed during the day, it also takes a lot of effort to get him to concentrate. It is only when it's nighttime when he will breastfeed a long time. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Every child is different. If he has no health risk from milk then that it good. Weaning will take time and consistency as such when potty training comes into play. If he is able to hold the sippy cup, then just use that consistently. If he refuses, place it in view and tell him your going to put his milk there. He may tantrum, and you will again offer to him nicely again. If he refuse, you will repeat this. He will identify this as his drink, he will soon associate that drink with your comforting offer. Praising his good behaviors. In time, you have modeled speech; better coping; praising to good behaviors. ..... I know it takes time, in the long run, you would be so proud of yourselves. As such, for being so concerned as you are now.

He might just not like it. I never did, my daughter who is 5 doesn't drink milk and my 3yo son gets it every now and then. There are plenty of other calcium sources and many things fortified w/vit d. I wouldn't push it. Give him yogurt/Kefir, cottage cheese, grated cheese, almond milk, salmon, tofu, smoothies, etc..

My eight year old was like this, and let me assure you, she is very healthy (and still doesnt drink milk). Will he eat cereal with milk on it? Look for one of those bowls with a straw. We had one that looked like a lion and she would have her cereal and drink the leftover milk from the straw.

We also did a lot with creme cheese. She was a picky eater all around, so I made little creme cheese sandwiches. It's tedious, but I put creme cheese between two cheerios, she ate tons of those. We'd take the gerber graduate veggie crackers and put veggie creme cheese between them for little sandwiches. Over time she started to like grilled cheese sandwiches, string cheese, bagels with creme cheese, those drinkable yogurts with a straw... These's tons of things fortified with calcium. It's not the end of the world if he's not drinking milk. I'd shy away from adding chocolate because I know older kids now that still wont drink milk unless it's chocolate.

Good luck, J.

My daughter just turned 1 and didn't take milk. I am only BF her in the morning and at night. She JUST started taking a bottle of milk before nap times. I just kept trying. It took almost a month trying everyday. I tried goats milk, which she liked more than anything else for a while... i tried rice milk, she didn't like it much...my son LOVED rice milk and drank that for a while before cows milk.
DOn't give up. Don't worry about him getting enough milk. He would be fine not drinking any as long as he is getting it from other sources...cheese, yogurt, pudding etc...
Good luck!

Hi J., Well I'm old school so my first advice to you would be, stop breast feeding and put him on a cup, and try adding a little vanilla, astract ot a little chocolate, hust enough to give it flavor, and it takes very little, J.
