ok, my baby boy will be one on Saturday and he has absolutely refused to nurse for the past 3 days. He would only nurse 1-2 times a day and is VERY WELL established on table food and whole milk. So I am okay with the weaning at this point as it has been a year...so today is day 3 and my breasts are very full and kind of hurt....should I pump to relieve or take Benadryl or what??? Also, kind of sad.....will miss it too! :( But so proud of myself of making it a year and baby-led weaning...I would have continued, but guess he is done with me!!!!

take a hot shower and express your breasts till the fullness is gone. then do ice packs for about 20 min after shower. make sure not to have it directly on the skin. you will have to do this for about 2 weeks. but be sure to only express just enough to relieve the fullness. if you continue to empty your breast, your body will think it needs to continue to make that amount. good luck and well done on making it so far my dd only lasted till 10 months and she was done.
When my daughter was done with me, that was the end of that. I had hoped to nurse longer, but she just wasn't into it.
Trust me....for days I begged her to nurse because my boobies were so full.
What I did was get in a hot shower and my milk squirted out which gave me some relief. It took about a week of being engorged and I only did the shower thing because she was already done with breastmilk and pumping would have just made it prolong the inevitable.
Hot showers helped me release the milk and it didn't take long to feel better.
Great job on nursing or a year!
You can pump a little, but I would not do it regularly or it will take longer to dry out. Try a warm compress or a warm shower to help you let off a little without having to draw it out which could keep you producing.
Hi J.,
I know how painful it is waiting for your milk to dry up. My doctor told me to wrap my breasts as tightly as possible in an ace bandage or very tight sports bra and tuck cabbage leaves in with them. I didn't use the cabbage leaves, but the lack of stimulation from them being wrapped up helped the drying up process.Expressing while taking a hot shower will also help. If you decide to use a pump to alleviate the pain don't empty your milk supply because your body will just produce that much more to replace it. I had to take Tylenol for the first 3 days/nights of being wrapped. Good news is after the first 3-4 days you shouldn't feel engorged anymore. Good luck!
