I'm babysitting a one year old that was just switched to regular milk from formula. He threw up a lot last night and i switched him back to his formula. He still threw up, so i gave him pedialyte. He's still throwing that up, even though I'm giving him small amounts at a time. He just had 4 ounces of formula and he hasn't thrown up in 15minutes, but i'm scared it's just a matter of time. What should i do, how long do i wait before i take him to the doctors. I have five kids, but my youngest is ten and right now, i need the help of people with small children. thank you

So What Happened?

I tried the pedialyte mixed with water. THis worked well, he hasn't had an episode at all. Of course, I barely gave him any at a time. Thanks for the help

Thanks to all the moms that sent in answers, He stopped throwing up after a day and he never had a fever. I'm glad i got a recipe for rice water as I had heard about this but didn't know how to prepare it. I told his mom to be careful giving him regular milk, because I suspect, this is what started it all. Now I know where to go for answers. Thanks, Moms are the best!
P.S. I ask mampedia for help, because this was happening late at night and I wanted to get some answers from moms. I did call the parents a.s.a.p., but they are young parents, and they knew less than me. Believe me, I would have taken him to the E.R. If he had a fever, because I'm scared of the swine flu. THanks again for all the helpful hints. THe baby fully recovered in one day, so I think it might have been, something he ate.

My son started throwing up and they diagnosed him with swine flu. I would consult a doctor right away and continue as much pedialyte as possible.

Hi, I know it's kind of late sorry. I wanted to share a remedy that we have used in our family for generations. It works on children as young as newborn, up to the elderly. We boil unrinsed rice in a sauce pan, and when the water has boiled for about 5 minutes, drain the water into a bottle/cup and add a pinch of sugar for flavor. This is not necessary for infants as they don't really care about flavor yet. Be sure the rice is not rinsed because you need all the starch from the rice you can get. Serve it warm and let the child sip it instead of milk or formula. It will replace his electrolites, and the starchy nature of the drink will coat and soothe his tummy. Even in the days following a stomach flue, or any other tummy issue. I used it for my son who went through Kemo treatment during the first 6months of life. Had only 3 episodes that I can remember. If he has stomach pain after eating solid foods due to the nature of his ailment you can add that same rice that was boiled earlier to some chicken broth letting the rice get as soft as possible or in a food processor bring it to a babyfood consistancy. Again, this will help coat and soothe the tummy and the chicken broth will add nutritional value.
Best of luck to you and the little one.

Hi P.,
Since he is young you will want to call the doctor right now. You probably don't need to take him in, but you should get some medical feedback. In general, you need to 1. Watch for dehydration. Track when was the last time he had a wet diaper. If its 8 hours or more its ER time. Also see if his mouth seems dry, does he have tears when he cries, does he seem energetic? 2. Stop both the milk and the formula. 3. Nothing by mouth for 2 hours from when he last threw up. Then give about 1 tsp of pedialyte every 10 minutes. Nothing else. Gatorade is an OK substitute. If he can keep that down for 2 hours then increase the pedialyte slowly. (e.g. 2 tsp every 10 mins for the next hour). If he didn't keep it down then wait again and try 1/2 tsp every 10 mins. 4. When he's been OK for about 4 hours then try giving more fluids, but still small quantitites such as an ounce at a time (not a full bottle). 5. When its clear he can keep down fluids then give a cracker or banana slice. No protein. Stay on a BRAT diet for the next day = bananas, rice, applesauce, toast.

Try even smaller amounts than 4 ounces. Try 1 or 2 at a time and see if they can keep it down. How many times has he thrown up total? Personally, I would take them to the doctor or at least call the doctor's office and seek advice. It is very easy for infants to become dehydrated quickly. However, I am a very cautious person by nature :)
I have a 3 year old and a 10 month old.

It's important to let his little body rest before trying to give him more liquid... he won't get dangerously dehydrated unless it's been a really long time since he's had anything to drink. One of the most common mistakes is for people to try and give liquids while the gag reflex is still sensitive. Wait several hours then try again. My ped told me that with my son.
Good luck!
