Why Am I So Thirsty???

Since Sunday, I have been so thirsty I can barely stand it. With all the water I've been drinking you'd think my urine would be clear, but it's still slightly yellow. And I'm constantly having to go since i'm drinking so much! Sorry for the detail, but i'm desperate for an answer. I've cut all caffiene out since yesterday, not that i drank a lot to begin with. And i haven't had anything processed or salty... and I'm one that tends to snack on salty stuff if given a choice. If I don't have any idea what's gong on here, other than it started very suddenly on Sunday. Didn't do much Sunday other than clean the house a little. Help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm thinking that this whole thirst issue was related to a pre-menopause symptom. It stopped as suddenly as it started. Either that or it was the thirst-reflex thing that one poster mentioned. Sinced the onset, i've been very fastidious about drinking the proper amount of fluid each day. And i haven't felt thirsty once.

Hi Debra - I dont know that you have anything to worry about yet. Keep on drinking plain water and your thirst will eventually be quenched. If you have any other symptoms like back pain, dizziness, low blood sugar attacks, etc. be sure to talk to your doc. It might not be a bad idea to get your glucose checked. You can always buy some of the sticks that you pass through your urine stream - they can tell you if you are spilling protein and/or sugar into your urine.

The reason I say dont worry yet is because I started making a deliberate effort to increase my plain water intake to between 80-100 oz a day. That's in addition to anything else I might drink that has calories or flavoring/sweeteners, etc. What I noticed is that for a good 2 weeks, I had the worst cottonmouth I've ever experienced even though I was drinking way more than I have in a long while. My PA friend told me that my thirst mechanism was finally working again and now it was just really talking me that I needed to drink.

Plain water does a great job of flushing and cleansing your liver and your kidneys because it passes right through and the liver doesnt need to do anything with it, like if it contained a flavoring or artificial sweetener. The liver has to process those things. As far as the yellow urine - I had exactly the same thing happen this past Monday. I had been taking in around 50-60 oz of water for about 3 weeks (down from 80-90). On Sunday I was back to my goal and I had 84 ounces. On Monday I had 96 oz. Even after drinking all that water for 2 days, on Tuesday morning my urine was still really dark yellow. Finally now on Wednesday, it's a much lighter color. I think I must have just had a lot of junk to clear out of my kidneys.

Sorry about the icky details - I hope my experience helps to calm your nerves a bit

Does diabetes run in your family? Maybe you should schedule an appointment to get your glucose tested.

Extreme thirst is a sign of Diabetes-you need to go to the doctor and have that checked at the very least. However it could also just be that you are dehydrated as well. I was going to say it could be something you ate but you already mentioned you didn't think your diet came to play. Also if you have taken any new meds the thirst could be coming from that. Best suggestion is go and see your doc to make sure. It could be a number of things but its your doctor that needs to rule things out-not you.

Get checked for diabetes. This is one of the biggest signs. You could also have other things going on in your brain and body systems. This is not "do-it-yourself" medicine. Run...don't walk to your physician.

Ask your doctor to test you for diabetes insipidus. My mom has it and she gets extremely thirsty with out her medication, urinates a lot and loves salty foods.

Extreeme thirst is a MAJOR sign of diabetes. Please go to your doctor and have it checked, even if only to eliminate the possibility. Your doc should be able to troubleshoot if it is not diabetes. Be prepared for blood work.

Are you pregnant?
Do you have diabetes in your family?
If your doctor's office has an advice nurse,
call that person and describe what's going on.
Keep drinking water . . . . no soft drinks.
Good luck.

You need to check this out, as if you have diabetes, you could go into a diabetic coma.

I don't want to scare you, but call your doctor. A friend of mine had the same symptom and ended up with some serious health issues. I'm not saying yours is the same problem, but I would check in with your doctor. If you need more info about what her issue was, feel free to PM me and I will find out for you.

It is also a symptom of diabetes too. Again, probably not your issue, but better to check it out and find out for sure.

Wishing you health,
T.

Both my grandfather and my brother had that happen and they both had diabetes. Not to scare you or anything but it's better to get checked out and find out it's nothing than to have it be something serious. Go to the doctor right away. Good luck!!

i dont know what answers you've gotten, but extreme thirst can be a sign of diabetes.
see your doctor ASAP.
and dont think that sugar is the cause; fats are the cause. reduce/eliminate fats in your diet. fats block the cells ability to absorb sugar, so although sugar is what shows up in the blood, its not the cause of the problem.
good luck
