Whole Wheat Crackers or Healthier Snacks for a 9 Month Old and Up?

My daycare gives my 9 month old club crackers and graham crackers. I'd like to limit her salt and sugar intake and get her into a wide variety of whole grains. Other than whole grain cheerios, what are some tasty healthy snacks for a child? Or are a few club crackers and graham crackers per week not such a big deal?

What can I do next?

The club crackers and graham crackers aren't a big deal but if you want to limit them then do. Goldfish come in varities that have servings of veggies in them. They are very tasty.

I'd say that a few club crackers/graham crackers each week are OK. Yes, I'd like my kids to have some healthier things, too, but I know at our Day Care, they have to buy bulk items at Sams Club/Costco to be able to keep costs down. It's hit or miss as to what kind of items are available any given week.

I'd just make sure that, at home, you provide the healthier options you'd like your child to have. It can't hurt to at least approach the director and ask if it's a possibility to look at some healthier/whole grain options. They may be receptive or may allow you to bring your own snacks in for your child. It never hurts to ask.

I think the bigger picture is at 9 months old she not eating all that much and what she does eat you want to count. I think I would send my own snacks and tell them to drop the crackers. If you choose to give it to her on the weekends then it's under your control. I would send sweet potato, banana, low-sodium cheese, toasted whole wheat bread cut into very tiny pieces, cheerios, small containers of full-fat yogurt. Club crackers and graham crackers are really pretty empty calories and high in sodium or sugar.

i personally think that grahm crackers n such are fine, but if u feel strongly about it u can buy the packs of whole wheat crackers and peanut butter or cheese they are very good and almost always on sale we get them at my house. also they come like a bag of chips but they are like veggies chip sticks, the kids find them very tasty and they are getting a serving of veggies in them one more thing u can try is in the baby isle they make fruit snacks especially for tots and they have a serving of fruit...good luck!

It's hard to control what she gets fed at day care. I too feel like she's not eating the healthiest there. But at least she eats (she refuses to eat anything I prepare for her at home). Some healthier snacks I try to give her at home are apples (hit or miss), banana (again, hit or miss), grapes (absolute favorite), Earth's Best crackers, Veggie puffy sticks (not sure if these are actually for her, but it sounds better), GoldFishes, cheese sticks.
O is 16 months.

Its not a big deal for an adult, but for a kid it can be huge for two reasons. 1. Its a larger percent of what they are getting per day then for an adult. 2. This is a critical time in developing your child's taste buds and learning to eat and enjoy foods. Now is a great time for learning to eat quality foods. Keep junk food away as long as possible.

Whole wheat crackers and cereals are great. Fresh or dried fruits (without added sugars) are good too. Some kids really like chunks of tofu, or eating corn and peas or cooked carrots.

I don't think a couple crackers a week are a big deal in the grand scheme of things. The graham crackers would bug me a little bit because of the high fructose syrup though.

Other things she could probably eat are cut up cheese and soft fruits like bananas, canteloupes, and watermelon. Whole wheat toast or bagels, preferably without high fructose corn syrup. If you're breastfeeding, you could put breastmilk into an ice cube tray to make your own momsicles. Put them in a mesh feeder and she's good to go.

Club crackers and graham crackers are not a healthy snack. There are high fructose corn syrup in them with bleached flour. It really bothers me that day cares and schools think some things are health and aren't. What about yogurt (without dyes), or fruit? Now it has been awhile since my children were that age (they are now almost 13 and 16), so for your baby it would depend on the amount of teeth too.

Here's the other thing, it depends on the type of sugar. The crackers have a lot of carbs and processed sugar. Gets in the blood quick and gets out of the blood quick. So something with protein is best. Again at 9 months I know that you want to be more cautious. Also, with so many children having peanut allergies it can be challenging for a day care. It is a tough call.

Here's a heads up on what the schools allow and their thinking, in our school district they claim potatoes are a vegetable. Since when? To my knowledge they are a startch. We have a long way to go to educate those who provide food for our children.

I wish you the best in finding a healthy snack for your child.

Have you tried mum mums? They were recommended to me by a mom with a little one who was allergic to everything. They are a Japanese cracker for little ones. My kids loved them and they were great practice snacks. I have found them at VG's, Hillers, and Toys R Us/Babies R Us. My kids loved the veggie ones. We also did the Puffs (which now come in organic as well).
