I was thinking about purchasing a white noise machine for my one year old's room. We haven't been able to watch tv in the living room because it will usually disturb her sleep. Do you think one of these machines will help block the sound from the tv and let her continue to sleep peacefully? Thank you for your feedback!

We were given a sound machine when my daughter was about 8 months or so...she has always been a light sleeper so i def. think that it helps keep her sleeping while we are up, moving about, watching movies, conversing etc
there are sound machines that have other options that just white noise and i highly encouarage that kind, after awhile the while noise just get to you. we use the ocean waves, or rain etc...
in fact, she is 3 now, and there are several nights of the week when we still use it....

I bought a cheap Walmart fan with 3 speed settings and have used it for all 3 of my kids for white noise. It works great for us since the babies room is right off of the kitchen, they don't hear anything!

Our nursery is next to our living room with a shared fireplace, so basically a big brick hole!! I used a sound machine with all three of my children and in the process got myself addicted to it!! Love it! We don't have the expensive type either, just the run of the mill machines.

Yes, yes yes, we love ours. My kids each have one in their rooms, and we are able to have adult parties while they sleep. You don't have to spend too much either, look at Target, usually in the "spa" section of the pharmacy aisles, where the foot baths are.

We've used one since our 2nd son had reflux and cried alot waking my 1st son up. Love them. Ended up getting one for us, mom and dad. I think they really help drown out back ground noise and promote sleep. It might take a night or two for her to get used to of it. I would start the volume on low and then turn it up after she has gone to sleep when you first start using it. Make sure it has just the white noise on it. The waves, seagulls, wind and rain are great but the nothing compared to just white noise. Wise to get a small one if you can because they are awesome to travel with too!

Oh I love ours! I actually use my ipod touch app for one. It's so good, I now can't sleep without it. I like it because when we are out and about I can turn it on in the car and he's OUT. I like the rain and wind chime. And it actually sounds like rain and not static on a tv. The wind chime is so peaceful!
We have now switched to Fisher Price Nature Lullabies and like it a lot to. I like it because it's not the same sound over and over again.

We have a white noise machine in each of our 3 bedrooms. They are well worth the investment. Just a note: while a fan will accomplish the same thing, they use far more power, and will wear out faster than the noise machine. You'll be better off with the real deal, and there's no need to get one with the most sounds: you'll likely only use one or two at most. For me, the most important feature is non-repeating sounds. I have a tough time falling asleep if there's a toe-tapping pattern to the sounds. :)

We've used an air filter that does double-duty by cleaning out some of the dust. You have to change the filters periodically but it seems more sensible to me than just a noise producer. But yes, I think they work great. My son needed the constant sound to filter out the cars going by, the birds chirping at 4:30 a.m. in May, and so on! He still uses one even though he is much older. My husband and I have one too. Bionaire is one company, Holmes is another. You can buy on line or at major stores (WalMart, Target, BJs). Some of the filters are interchangeable between brands - make sure you buy it at a place that sells replacement filters or that you leave enough time for ordering them. They do get dust-filled!

Our white noise machine has been on every single night since the birth of my 1st, about 6 years ago. It was my favorite thing in the nursery. A total life saver! It's still running in my 2 yr olds room at night.

We love white noise machines. Both my boys ( 3 & 1) sleep With them. We acually got an iPod alarm clock at bed bath and beyond. It has 6 soothing noises- waterfall, rain, ocean, sunrise (what does the sunrise sound like?), brook, and something else. We use the ocean and waterfall for them. And then my 3yo has his own music mix (Disney. Raffi, music together, soundtracks, etc) on an iPod that I put on when he's playing in his room. It's great! They are about $50, but use one of those 20% off coupons you get in the mail for bed bath and beyond.

Hi H.,

We have been using the Marpac 980, too for a while now and it is wonderful! You can get it on Amazon, I know. We had problems with TV noise also as my daughter's room is close to our family room and you cannot here anything now with the sound machine on.

I used to use a fan and humidifier, but I have found the sound machine to be the best by far. I still use a humidifier, but it is too quiet to really do the same job as a sound machine.

I also concur that a plain sound machine should be all you need--I don't think you need one that plays music or sounds, but that is up to you. We did use the Sleep Sheep when she was a baby, which seemed to work well, but did not play through the night.

The marpac is expensive ($50), but absolutely worth it.

Good luck and hope you find what works best for you and your little one!
Take care.

I'd go get a small fan for her room, just point it straight up or whatever. The noise of the fan and the air circulation will give you what you need. No need to purchase a white noise machine when a fan does dual purpose with the same result.

We've used one since my daughter was a baby, and it's worked out great on cutting the house noise down. We have neighbors above and below us, so we get a lot of extra sound. The machine helps keep the edge off the loud sudden sounds, although they still hear noise it's not as jarring.

We have used a fish tank since our son was born. We don't fill the tank as high as it could go and the splashing is just enough so we can sneak into the kitchen at night. And he likes his goldfish.
