I want to replace the wallpaper in our kitchen. Where is a good place to buy wallpaper?

Also, any suggestions on how to remove wallpaper? I know there are steamers (about $50) and then I've heard of a mud plaster technique. Have you had success with any other techniques?

Thanks a bunch!

What can I do next?

Hi jennifer, I used one part liquid fabric softener to two parts HOT water, as hot as you can yet. It works alot better than a steamer you can rent. You just spray it on the walls and scrape and it comes off in big pieces. Plus it smells good too. good luck

I have removed wallpaper in two bathrooms, plus a wp border in our house and here is what I have learned...
Steamers don't work, they get hot and the steam hurts and they dont remove much of the paper.
I used the liquid fabric softener trick that I saw on HGTV. Pull off wallpaper or score to make holes in the paper. I had better luck just ripping as much of the top layer as I could. Don't worry if the top layer of the sheetrock comes with it. Put hot water in a bucket and liquid fabric softener. Wipe a rag soaked in the liquid mix over the paper or paper backing stuck to wall. GIve it about 30sec-1min to soak in and then it magically peels right off.
After I got all of the wallpaper off I sanded the walls lightly then did the drywall putty treatment to give it texture. After that dried for about a week I painted it with 2 coats of paint. My walls turned out great in both bathrooms! Good luck!

If you are taking down wallpaper my advice is to not put more up. The new trend is no wallpaper. Have it textured and painted. Believe me if you happen to be wanting to sell your home any time in the near future it will sell better without wallpaper. We just pulled all of ours off the wall to sell our home. Our home was built in 85. We are the only house on the block that has changed the interior and we are getting lots of showings with very good feedback on the newness of the interior. My brother is the owner of Protek Painting --Kory Cheatham-- he can take down the paper, retexture and paint. ###-###-####

Wallpaper removal is a VERY BIG project. We did our very small powder bath and it took over a week to get it off. It was a mess! In my Kitchen, we hired someone who came in and sealed over the top of the old wallpaper and then papered over the top of it. This was a lot less expensive and a lot less time-consuming. It has been about 3 years now and it still looks great! I would recommend this method over removing the old wallpaper, if at all possible. The gentleman we used actually works in the wallcovering department at Home Depot. His name is Don King and I believe he is listed in Plano. If you need his number, e-mail me and I will try to dig it up for you. Good luck!

I just wanted to let you know that I tried all of those products when we lived in Florida to take down wallpaper...and it was next to impossible! When my Dad came over he pretty much told us we wasted a ton of money because the trick was to just use water. We used a big sponge and wet the wallpaper thoroughly with warm water...the wallpaper just peeled away with the help of a peeler thing (don't know the name of the actual product but it is in the wallpaper aisle of Home Depot). I know it sounds too simple to be true, but I promise it works! Just make sure to really get the wallpaper throughly wet or else it won't work. Good luck! Hope this helps.
