When Can I Stop Giving My Money to Formula Companies?

Hi ladies, my almost 11 month old has been on formula for a couple of months now after she stopped bf'ing at 9 months (due to my increase in work hours-unavoidable). At what point can I start giving her regular milk? She has had unsweetened rice milk, a few ounces here and there with meals and she loves it. I'd love to start giving this to her instead of mixing up formula all the time, especially since we always end up wasting the formula she doesn't drink, and it's expensive. Do I have to wait until she is at least a year old? I've seen formula in the store for kids up to 2 years old... I can't imagine doing this for another whole year! She eats a pretty varied diet of fruits, vegetables, cereals and some meat & dairy. Thanks.

What can I do next?

My son was drinking milk at 11 months because he wouldnt drink his formula anymore. His doctor said it was ok.

Our Dr had me start my kids on whole cows milk at 1yr old. If your child is already eating fruits, veg, cereal and meat and some dairy, I'd call your dr and see if you can go ahead and start her on the cows milk, that way when you go for her 1yr old check up, you can f/u w/ the dr then to see how your daughter is doing on the milk.

I know how you feel about the expense of the formula... I felt like we hit the lottery when we stopped buying it. And unless your child is under weight or had some medical problem, I personally never heard of any child being on formula over 1yr old!!

Best of Luck

I know doctors recommend not starting whole cows milk or anything else until one year. And don't worry about that toddler formula. It's just a marketing ploy to waste more of your money. As long as your baby is a healthy eater, you wont need anything like that.

Hi R., I don't know what formula you use, but I had a few friends who used Parents Choice Organic, and that's what my son was on when he weaned. He did great, and it is half the price of the regular organic (at Walmart). I noticed the toddler formulas all have corn syrup, which I try to avoid. I'm not a dr but would think if your daughter eats really well and has a source of iron in her diet, you could start the transition. We did whole milk, for the calcium and the fat content, which is important. I'd check if rice milk provided the same fat as whole milk because I think they need it until 2.

maybe go slow atfirst.do 3/4 formula and 1/4 wholemilk and everyfew days increase themilk anddecrease formula so she will get used to the taste of milk. good luck

well, you already know she's not allergic to milk because she drinks BM and formula so go ahead and switch her to whole milk. just be sure to tell her dr at her 1 year check up. I don't know anything about rice milk sorry :( I switched my kids to regular milk at 10 months with no problems.

I agree with the other Mom's. If your child eats fruit, veggies carbs etc then the whole milk would probably be ok. I would check with the Dr first though to be sure. I switched my son to whole milk at 1 year almost exactly. It is nice buying a gallon of milk instead of the formula. You have to do what you feel is right for your child's health. Only you know if your daughter would get enough vitamins from her food for her to be healthy.
