What Was I Thinking?! - Muncie,IN

Please forgive me, but I need a place to vent. I don't really have a support system here, so I need someplace to let it out.

I just agreed to bring home 2 new huge cats...not just one, but 2! He ambushed me, I swear. He played dirty, he showed me pictures!

Ok, from the beginning. We have one cat already, a female, fix and nearing 11 years old. She's a bit of a...witch. Not really affectionate but not mean. Not really a lover cat unless she decides. We just sort of co-habitat with her. We've tried getting a second cat twice now, both female, both horrible failures. My husband and I just absentmindedly wondered if maybe a younger kitten or a male would work better, nothing came of it. A few days ago a twitter my husband follows mentioned they had two cats looking for a home in another state. I brushed it off, so did he. Then today he called this afternoon (never does) and tells me that he made a comment about the cats to the lady with them. Something neutral about too bad about not being in state. She replied back that she was willing to meet us half way...he actually was calling to ask me if I might be willing to make a trip for these cats, both of them! Then he sent me links to them..Maine Coons! One of them is orange!! My all time favorite breed and color and I said yes!!

What was I thinking? 2 new cats! This means 2 new cat boxes for me to clean, 2 new food dishes, water dishes, toys and treats...trying to find a safe place for them to be while we try to get Isis to accept them. Where am I going to keep 3 cat boxes? My husband was just complaining about how fast we've been going through litter with one cat and I'm the one who cleans the box. Did I mention I also have a 4 year old?

Ok, I'm breathing again. I just needed to let it out. Thanks Moms!

So What Happened?

Thanks again Moms, I just needed a place to spazz for a moment. I'm good now. I love cats and I know I'll love them should they come here. I've already read up on the ASPCA recommendations for introducing new cats to home cats. They recommended a box for each cat, though the new boys might be able to share. We'll see, we may only have to buy one new box.

And HA HA to Momofmany! I refuse to be the crazy cat lady at 30!

The lady responded, she's playing dirty too, more pictures! We are now in negotiations for the boys. Here we go, Lord help me! They are both so beautiful, all 16lbs of them. Isis is in for a surprise.

Why do you need 3 cat boxes? Don't they share? The one time we had two cats, they shared.

I'm guessing that if the two new cats know each other, they'll be okay. They'll have an ally against Isis the witch cat :)

And I've found that I hate the clumping cat litter. I like the cheap stuff much better, thank you! With liners.

Oooh, I have two big cats that need a home! One is orange, too. They are barn cats, so fluffy and gorgeous! Are you saying I just need to tweet about them? Wish I knew that. They really are cute. They were napping together outside, all curled up. I have a picture of it. Wanna see it? ;)

I have four kids, three dogs, four cats and two birds. While it is a lot of work and chaotic sometimes I love our animals! Sometimes I like them more than the kids! I think it is great your saving these animals, if it doesn't work out you could try re-homing them on craigslist in your area? In the beginning you'll notice all the extra work...after some time goes by it will just be something you do. Good Luck!

HAHAHA momofmany
I have three cats and they use the same cat box. We scoop it every day, or every other day. It is covered and we use clumping cat litter.

One of my girls is truly the Alpha Dogcat.. She bashes the dogs, us, the other cats, guests. She is a real *itch. She has no claws but can keep both our shepherds and the beagle at bay. Then there are days we are allowed to be in her presence.

You'll get used to it. Then you'll love them and won't know what life was like without them.

At least your hubby told you. MIne came home one day with a cat. I asked him where he found it, he says by the library. It was the library's cat. That one I didn't keep.

Maine Coons are beauties and HUGE!! Poor thing, if you can't back out you gotta put on a happy face and know you are saving these cats. I complain about my litter box, with 2 cats daily. Drives me crazy so I feel your pain. Maybe Isis will like her new friends. If not then she'll just co-habitate with them like she does with yu guys. And yes your hubs played dirty so he gets to clean out the new litter boxes when he comes home from work!

Whyever would you need to have 3 litter boxes? I could possibly see 2 since you'll have three cats, especially if your witchy-poo doesn't accept her now housemates. I have three cats, all females. We have one 1/2 litter boxes (a full size one in the bathroom and a small one in the utility room in case the bathroom door is closed). There are no spats over them, and one of mine is slightly antisocial too. I scoop solid waste every day, and totally replace the litter once a week. I don't use clumping stuff because the type I use is flushable. My litter lasts forever, I usually only buy one bag a month and it's not huge.

They also share feed/water dishes. We have a dispenser for both so there's only one water dish to rinse out and fill every morning and I usually fill the food dispenser 2x a week. I don't have a problem with them over eating (I did at first when I introduced it, but then it leveled off and they're at a good weight now, according to their vet). When we give them canned food, their portions are in separate dishes and those dishes are spaced out across the kitchen floor. Except for my Toni. My youngest daughter likes feeding her at the table. LOL The darn fur ball sits on my daughters high chair which is the perfect height for her to eat out of her dish that's sitting on the table. It's really cute.

Also, during the summer, all of the fur balls come and go as they wish through their little door.

And if your husband initiated this, he should totally help clean up after them! Your 4 yo can also help take care of them. My 4 yo loves her cat duties and doesn't even balk at taking care of the cat box. :)

I took on a 6 week old jack rusell puppy in December!! I feel your pain! We bought all the stuff needed. I currently have a 11 year old lab who stays outside and 2 outside cats (7yrs old brother & sister) that are my snake/mousers. The boy cat adopted the lab as his mother as a kitten and never leaves the dogs side. they sleep in the dog house together. I was planning on keeping the puppy in the house till it got older, but that didn't work. Pup would not soil it's crate and would whine until it got to go outside and I can't really complain cause it would go immediately and then go back to bed, but it had to go 7 times a night at that age and that was with no water after 6:00pm!! So that did not work with me. i'm not getting sleep deprived for a dog, child yes, dog - no way!! So I borrowed a rabbit hutch from a friend and installed the necessary heat lamp and pup is now outside where she can poop & pee till her heart is content. We would let her out during the day supervised around the other animals and after about 2 weeks, she was accepted as one of the family. there were lots of hisses and kitty puppy attacks, but they have managed to come to an understanding. A huge cold front helped facilitate this as we brought all three in at night and had them co-habitat in our utility room and none of them wanted to go out in the freezing cold!! LOL. Now all three sleep in the dog house together and the cat still has to get onto the puppy, so does the granny dog for that matter, but they do so gently just to teach her what is acceptable.

So my advise is to bring the new comers into one room, & use maybe a baby gate or two --one above the other to keep them confined to a space, but where the cats can smell each other and eventually they should come to an understanding. Just be patient with Isis and have ffaith she can adapt. good positive energy!! Best of Luck and yes, you will have way more litter use and mess!! LOL

I love Maine coons!!! I hope all works out with it :)

We had 3 cats at one time (as a child) and it was the best, but they all got along. I wish I could have cats now, but hubby is allergic and refuses.

My husband convinced me to get a puppy, in the winter, while pregnant. And not just any puppy this tiny little rat of a dog that was to small to walk up and down steps and could fit through the chain link fence. As if I really needed to carry a dog outside, in the snow 101 times a day while he was at work, lol.

It didn't last long and puppy found a new home.

I recommend you simplify your cat care routine. Use just one litter box and feed them just dry kitty food from one big bowl and use one larger water bowl. Done. Clean all once a day.

wow, you took on alot didn't you?? :) I would keep breathing and maybe reconsider.....what if Isis doesn't like these cats?? Thats gonna be a problem- 11 years and already had problems with others that you brought home, I don't think the cat will "change her mind" I would seriously reconsider. Otherwise, you are setting yourself up for frustration and unneeded stress. GL!~

Maine coons?? Lovely! Our little cat looks like a mini one!

We adopted a fat short haired cat last summer and we had to replace flooring as a result. We love our fat Sugar kitty..but our older (same age..11 years old) cat is affectionate with us on her own terms..and made things rough with the new fatty catty.

I highly recommend this (we learned the hard way) for cat boxes.....go to Target/Walmart and get 2 more that are actually Rubbermaid boxes...low but big and wide ones. Ours are about 18 inches by 30 inches...we now use a scoop litter (way easier for me to maintain actually than the regular clay litter we used form day one with the older cat)...and I, too have cat boxes where I never imagined them!

But my cats get along well enough now and we all are living happlily ever after, with no one pottying on my floor.

Enjoy your pretty new kitties!
