What Could Be Happening?

I have a 4yr old and a 2 yr old and for a while now they have been having cold symptoms. I have taken them to the Dr. on many occasions just because when my 4yr old gets sick it doesn't go away easily and turns worse. Their pediatrician told me to give them Claritin. I have them on the generic right now. When they wake up well my 4yr old has a stuff nose and they both have productive coughs. My 4 yr old doesn't have allergies I know she could be irritated by them. I do have a humidifier but the thing makes their floor soaked. I don't know what to do for them anymore and it seems like what ever is happening it doesn't want to leave. Any help would be great.

What can I do next?

At this time of year you may want to consider a de-humidifier, which pulls water out of the air and therefore reduces chances for mold.

Could you possibly have mold in your home? My sister's son was having cold after cold, he always had a runny nose when they lived in their apartment. Come to find out, MOLD. The had to move and almost immediately he cleared up. Her ped. told her that while mold will hurt you while you are living with it (it can even cause mental problems) once you are away from it, the problems do go away. This may not be what is going on with you, but it is something to consider.

pull the rug up under the humidifier and see if there is mold under it. if it makes the floor wet chances are good there is mold under it and that could be what is causing them to be sick.

Allergies and sensitivities can develop at any time. Sometimes a humidifier can make the air too wet and can foster mold and dust mites. Maybe you could try a different humidifier. Let the room dry out during the day and when you run the humidifier at night leave the door open so it doesn't get too moist in there. To wash away airborne irritants from their sinuses, get a neti pot and rinse out their noses with a slightly warm saline solution several times during the day. If it keeps lingering, at some point you may want to see a pediatric allergist.

I know that it's probably is best to use dehumidifier and warm water breeds bacteria like crazy. I can tell you how to make your house smell and feel clean air since we have all had our homes closed tight for the winter but mine doesn't feel that. I don't see anything "floating" in the air when the sun's ray come through the window. I have allergies and asthma and they aren't affecting me and there are things to do in your home to make it better and it does for me and my children, especially my youngest. I never felt better otherwise. Let me know if you want to know what I have done to make it easier for my family. Also, antioxidants are great to have regards to allergies. There are fruits and food that have antioxidants and some are high in antioxidants and you may want to see if your children are eating those kinds of foods too. My husband and I don't give our boys medications, whether OTC or prescribed because they will weaken the immune system. We help increase their immune system by fruits, veggies, vitamins from our company because of alot vitamins have sugar in them and why do that to children and water (alkaline water). I can explain more in details if you ask me whatever it is you're interested in knowing. I will pray for your and your family.

Hi K.,

A complete detox of your home will help them get strong enough to fight these things off quickly. Synthetic chemicals break down our immune systems and contraindicate with each other just like pharmaceuticals do and we aren't even sure which ones are affecting us. Detoxing is simple, can be inexpensive and will improve everyone's health. I have seen Asthma disappear from homes. I have seen ADHD and allergies disappear from my home. We don't get sick anymore.

You can feel the difference in a detoxed home. It's like going from inside Wal-mart to sitting on the beach. The results can be amazing. If you're interested in trying it feel free to get back to me and I can tell you what I did.

Regards,

M.

I agree with the idea that the humidifier could have created mold, especially if the allergies are worse at home. Get a new humidifier. Look on line for reviews, don't just get the cheapest one. We bought the Vicks style for $40 and it just spewed water in the air that fell on the floor. I can't remember the name of the one we have now, but it got good reviews online and works really well. Even the cute animal shaped ones work well. We have a frog shaped one for the baby. Get rid of rugs and stuffed animals, or wash the stuffed animals frequently. Wash their sheets in hot water every week. Take the girls for allergy tests. We also used Simply Saline nasal spray. I have never been brave enough to try the Neti pot, but know many people who say it works!

My daughter has the same symptoms. I suspected milk allergy. Got her tested recently. She is allergic to grass, weeds, and dogs. The lab screwed up and didn't do the food allergy test so we are waiting on that still. Claritin did not work for her. She takes a 1/2 tsp of zyrtec and omnaris (prescription) nasal spray. It has helped quite a bit. I am also looking into an air purifier bc several people w allergies have told me they help.

Maybe you need an electric air filter.
Is it really green up where you are? Maybe it is throwing lots of pollen around.. With all of the grass cutting, shrub and tree trimming.. If the windows are kept open, could really be affecting them.

You could also consider having your home air quality tested.
