It will be chilly, last week in March, I dont want to spend much because I'm saving for a big vacation this summer, but I need to get away! What could be fun for my 7 yr old, fun for me and not too far, not too expensive. Please dont say a "staycation" cuz that turns into me cleaning out closets, running errands and trying to keep my son off the Wii every second of his vacation. I need to GETAWAY form it all, like a week long bubble bath. But I will have an almost 8 yr old. ANY ideas?? I'm in central NJ

What can I do next?

Bank of America is having first admissions to various museums in area, like the MOMA, kids museums, etc. You could take him on a creative trip, where he makes pottery; or you could plan an active week trip, call local sport activity gyms, ask him to allow review of their services, ie tae know do, kickboxing, boxing, ice skating, hockey, basketball, cooking, baking, chocolate and cupcake making, trapeze training in NY, where you do it together... He moves and you both bond over a sport... Old Bridge, Sayreville, Woodbridge, Piscataway has tons of athletic gyms. Kids only learn what schools, teachers, AND PARENTS teach them and allow them to do or NOT TO DO... Take him to the NYSE and teach him about money and investing... Have him to a week of community service, like donating clothes, toys to S. victims instead of becoming self and computer absorbed... My daughter did all of these activities and became ore community religiously focused, today, at 25, she is a good, considerate neighbor and human being...

I recently asked for recommendations halfway between NYC and Boston. People recommended a neat Dinosaur Park in Rocky Hill (?) CT and a nearby Carousel Museum that sounded cool. You can find it if you look for my recent questions. It could be fun and it's only a couple of hours from where you are.

Go on hotels.com or priceline.com, pick an area (Princeton, Trenton, Philly or wherever you want to go), put in a low bid for a 5 star hotel and see where you end up.

NYC has a city pass where you can see 5-6 attractions and sights for around $100. Most city passes gives you 7-9 days to use your pass - perfect number of days for Spring Break. If you take the subway in and out, get to each attraction as early as possible, you might be able to avoid having to stay in a hotel.

Look up "day trips from Princeton" on the internet.

Alot of our museums, shopping centers and libraries host special programs during spring break. Some museums might even offer free days.

I'd go into NYC for a night. Head in one morning, spend all day there, spend the night in a hotel, have another fun day and head back to NJ.

Or look into Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos. They might have some spring break deals going on.

Or come on down to Philly. Spend the day at the Franklin Institute.

Do you have a Great Wolf Lodge or other indoor water park/hotel? I know Great Wolf can be expensive, but even if you stay for a night or two it's totally worth it! Besides the water park they have this thing called MagiQuest and although my kids are too young for it, it seems to be quite popular!

I really like Kym's suggestions. Here are a few more, just based on geography.

NY
NY Math Museum
Hayden Planetarium
The Met (they have a special Percy Jackson scavenger hunt -- try reading your son The Lightning Thief all week, then take him to the Met)

PHILLY
Franklin Institute
Please Touch Museum

PA
Washington Crossing State Park
Valley Forge

NJ
Turtleback Zoo
Liberty Science Center
See if there are any community service/rebuilding projects you can participate in at the Shore

RIGHT NEAR YOU
Plainsboro Preserve!
Just take a walk in Princeton and enjoy the world's best ice cream at the Bent Spoon

Have play dates.
Go to the park.
Play in the yard.
Read books.
Do art, painting.
Have your child help you in the house... teach him how to do things in the house. Even how to vacuum. My son is 6, and he loves to vacuum. Also teach him how to cook. Again, my son is 6, I have been teaching him how to cook since he was 3 years old, and now, he can. With my supervision of course. He can make salads, I let him cut things with a butter knife, he can crack open eggs and make scrambled eggs, sandwiches, help making cookies, cereal etc.
Use the time to teach your son... things. Productive, things. Not him just being passively entertained. These are things that a person can use their whole life.

I have 2 kids, 6 and 10.
We only have 1 vehicle. During breaks I don't always have the vehicle everyday. My Husband takes it during breaks. So hence, we are sometimes at home, all day. And I tell my kids, ahead of the break, what we will be doing/learning. And they have fun. Home stuff, but useful stuff.

Or, if you want a break, then get someone to come and babysit your child. Then for a day, you can get away.

Or, look up NJ's website. Most cities and States, have their own website.
Look at it for activity ideas.

Do you have any friends a couple of hours away you could visit and find a hotel nearby with an indoor pool? Or stay outside Philly at a hotel with an indoor pool. I've heard it has great kid attractions and then the pool will keep it fun vs too much "sight seeing" for a young boy.
