Washing Car Seat Padding

I overheard a mother the other day mention that she washes the covers on her children's car seats at least once a week. My kids don't stay ruthlessly clean but this seems a little excessive. I will wash them if the kids have accidents or they get visibly dirty or if the kids need to get in them wet after swimming or being swearty. They aren't 100% clean all the time and I don't think it is reasonable to keep them that clean. I find that they never fit the same way again once I wash them and they are a pain in the rear end to take off and put back on. How often do you wash the car seat covers? Do you wish you washed them more or less often?

What can I do next?

Clean-a-phobes talk about how much they clean in order to impress. I think it's crazy!

I gave our grand-kids car seats to their foster mom. She told me that they take them to the carwash to clean them. They just take them out and set them on the ground or hood and spray them down. Just rinse well

They just set them out to dry during the day.

It works very well

I've never had my little ones eat or drink (other than water) in the car, so I've typically only needed to wash 2-4x/year other than spot cleaning. I keep the seat covered when not in use so they don't get dusty or hot in the sun.

We've washed them twice, and both times were when my son vomited all over the car seat.

once a year if no "prompting" via puke, poo or pee:) LOL! I rely a lot on vaccuming and spot cleaning and I do wipe down the plastic parts once a month when I clean out my car.

Umm, when I wash my car I just wash them by hand. I take vinegar and baking soda and a wash cloth and clean it by hand.

Carseat has been used since my 6 yr old was 5 mo old. He used it, and then my second son used it who is now 3 1/2 yrs old and still in it. I have washed it maybe one time? I'll wipe it down and vacuum as needed, but that's about it. Maybe that mom meant she "washes" it by wiping down or something?

yah, I heard you are not supposed to wash them that often. I wash mine if it gets pee or throw up or a large amount of milk or something... i have to wash mine today and I think it will be the third or fourth time in 2 years. Gross I know, but it is such a hassle.

I wash mine every few months. And you are NEVER supposed to wash the harness!

Ha! I vacuum mine once in a while, but washing them is strictly reserved for potty accidents.

If my kids were this messy I'd stop giving them food in the car. I only wash the covers if a diaper has leaked, if someone vomitted in the car, spilled a drink etc. Mine wash really well and I've never had a problem with them. Once a week is pretty excessive to be removing the carseat from the car, washing the cover and then putting the carseat back in the car.

Once a week IS excessive. If you do wash the cover, do NOT dry it in the dryer. I only wash mine after a major accident or they just look really dirty. I'm likely on the too few times side, maybe somewhere in between is best. And read your manual, you have to be careful cleaning the straps. Happy Mommy-ing!

Bahahahah!!!
My kids seat covers only got washed once in a blue moon--if something nasty spilled on it or they threw up on it or something.
We spend (and spent) so much time in the car coming and going that I never could strip them off and wash/dry them for fear I would need to USE them. I did find, however, that on the rare occasion that I did wash them for some reason, that air drying them (usually turned them upside down resting ON the chair sitting in the driveway in the sun) helped them keep their fit/shape.
