I have a 4 1/2 year old daughter and am considering getting her a handheld video game for occasional use. Does anyone have opinions regarding which one is better? She's never had an electronic game before, so I don't know much.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Got the leapster. Thanks for all the advice. They both seemed great, but we have 2 neighbor girls with Leapster and figured we could share games possibly. Thanks to all those moms helping other moms.

I have preferred VSmile for my kids. My daughter is 6 and my son is 3. We have both and I think that the VSmile is a little easier to use. My daughter has enjoyed the leapster now that she's a little older.

Hi,

Neither of my kids loved leapster. I stuck with leapster when it went to TV and now wished I had tried vsmile or something else. Mostly it was too old for my kids when they were young and too boring when they were old enough to understand. I never tried Vsmile though my kids were always attracted to it. I have no opinion there.

Good luck

My son is 7 years old and has had a Leapster for 3 years. He absolutely loves it. I highly reccommend the Leapster over the VSmile. My son got a newer one for Christmas a few years ago and when my nephew comes over they both have one to play with. I even find that my nieces ages 9 and 12 want to play with it while they are here. And these are kids that have games like a PSP and a Gameboy Advance, but they like the Leapster.

We purchased the VSmile for my both my kids for Christmas. They are 3 and 5. I compared them and spoke to many. There really are no differences, but one mother did comment that she didn't like the screen on the Leapster that her son has and would have bought the VSmile had she known. Our major reason for buying the VSmile was because we have the one for the TV and they could use the games interchangably. We only use the portable ones for the road and otherwise they use the bigger one for the TV.

Good luck, hope this helps.

I have a daughter the same age and she received a Leapster for Christmas. She loves it! She plays with it all the time. My only experience with the Vsmile is my friend's son has one. She says he rarely plays with it. Hope that helps you decide!

We have both, I prefer the leapster though, there is more to use the older you get, my daughter is in 2nd grade and there are still games for Leapster we get that can challenge her. I like the vsmile ( we have it for my son) but the hand held one we have had trouble with, we have the one for the tv, and that one is good, I like how they have the color buttons for some things. I think there is more out there for the Leapster though then the Vsmile. That is just my opionion.

my daughter just turned 5 and we went with leapster. I'm not too familiar with video games in general and leapster's price was slightly better and it's a brand I've definitely grown to trust over the years. She's had many learning toys by leapfrog and they always hold up well and do the job they are intended to do. i definitely wanted a handheld so we could take it on trips to cheer competitions etc and she'd have something to do. so far, so good. she is really enjoying it and is even sharing it with her brother is is almost 4 and needs a bit more prodding to get interested in learning than she does so the video game gets him a little more interested.

My two children are grown, 22 and 20 - and one of the things I would do differently is NOT to have introduced any sort of video game to them when I did, which was about 5 or 6. It is such a huge dose of stimulus for them visually, which is part of the reason why they become so absorbed by it. Occasional use quickly becomes daily use before you know it. Get suggestions from other mothers as to what is currently out there. Musical books, interactive books - I know there are other fun items if you just do some checking. Just a suggestion.

My son has the Leapster and we love it. I was worried that he would grow out of it but they came up with games for older kids. He is now doing multiplication and division while playing video games. We really like it. And if we have any problems, LeapFrog has never given me a hard time about replacement parts or product.

I don't have any experience with the vsmile but both my children have the leapster and they use them alot when we go in the car or they need some quiet time at home. My son is 4 1/2 and my daughter is 9 and she still uses hers! I like the leapster because it has so many learning skills that the kids don't even realize it most times. The games grow with their learning levels and they are NOT violent!

I have and will continue to recommend the leapster. The only thing I would not do is spend the extra money for the leapster for the tv, we have one and we never hook it up to the tv. They mainly use it as I said in the car or even when we go to the dr or a restaurant..anyplace they have to "wait" and they need to be settled.

Both of my children have leapsters. We have had them for 4 years now. They loved them. They are now almost 7 and 10 and we have since gotten them the nintendo DS because everyone they know has one, but I still find them playing with their leapsters. This is one electronic toy that is worth it. We have gotten plenty of use out of ours. With head phones on it is great to keep them occupied like while waiting for dinner out and things like that. I hope this helps.

I preferred the Leapster when my girls were little. There are so many books that you can buy to use with it along with the disks. My girls loved it and they learned alot from using it. It is the best thing to use for those long car rides too. Good luck.

We have the VSmile. It's educational as well. It also has programs that grow with age. VSmile has a lot of my son's favorite character's teaching him educational values. I'm not sure how the Leapster works because we don't have one, but I understand they are great as well. My son uses his VSmile mostly in the car or when we are out somewhere and he needs something to occupy him, but it also can connect to the television and he can play it on there as well. It also has a docking station that you can buy separately to charge the battery.

Hi R., We have a Leap Pad, and a Quantum Leap Pad. I really like both of them, but I think the Quantum pad is better, although it is made for older kids. There are so many options with the Leap Pad systems, from reading to math to world geography I think they were well worth the cost and all of my kids have enjoyed playing with them and learning along the way. They are also really good on batteries usage. Unlike some toys they don't seem to go through them quickly.

I am a mother of 4 children and I found that the V-Smile and Leapster are both good games. I bought the V-Smile for my children because they are able to get the effect of a vidoe game (like they want) but can learn too. It teaches them different things while they are having a blast playing games. When my children would play with a family members Leapster, they would get bored quickly because they new it was all about learning. Where with the V-Smile, they're getting the games they want while learning. Like Scooby Doo for example... You're trying to get him to finish the roller coaster ride with jumping the broken areas and thing but you're spelling words at the same time. I bought the game to hook to the TV as well as hand helds so I could play with them and it is a lot of fun for even me.

It depends on the cartoons they like they are equally learning intensive but i would go to the store and see what characters they have games for that would interest your child. I work at a retail store that sells the I can look for you and sned you a pm if you'd like that way you don't have to run out yourself just send me a private message if you would like me to do that for you.
