VBAC Doctor

So I'm 9 weeks pregnant with Kidlet #2. My first was a c-section and I'm really against having another one, unless absolutely necessary. Now I've been having a VERY hard time finding a doctor who will treat me like a patient and not as a percentage. My current ob/gyn (he didn't deliver Kidlet #1) refuses to do VBACs at all. So I made an appointment with a midwife who said yes to trying a VBAC, but I was kind of put off by the almost complete lack of any pre-natal testing and the super-casual attitude. The third appointment I made with another midwife who has a doctor back-up, but it's almost a self-serve kind of place (I had to test my own urine and do my own weigh-in) in a bad part of town that's already sent me the payment schedule for delivery because they like to have it paid in full by the time I'm 6 months! Heck, I never saw the actual doctor and they didn't even verify that I was really pregnant! Last, but not least - my appointment yesterday was with a doctor who said the entire practice (all the doctors) vote on whether or not I'm eligible for a VBAC when I'm about 24 weeks along. What?! I have to wait until I'm 24 weeks to find that out?? Basically I'm looking for a doctor who's willing to look at my records, examine me and say "Yes, we can try a VBAC." or "No, we can't do a VBAC and here's why...". Evidently it's like finding a needle in a haystack! So does anyone have a recommendation for a doctor or midwife who treats people like human beings instead of a risk percentage? Maybe takes the time to find out about you and your medical history and then gives you an informed opinion? Thanks for any referrals or info you might have!

Hi A.,
Sorry, but I wasn't able to read you full request but just thought to mention my midwife who is amazing. I will be considered highrisk soon when I am pregnant again and she is able to care for me so I wanted to pass her info on to you. It is worth a call to see! She is the best doctor/OGBYN I have ever had! She is so wonderful I would travel so far just to keep her!

Hi! I don't know what part of town you live in but I had the BEST doctor in the entire world and had a VBAC. His name is Dr Douglas MacFarlane (sp?) and his practice is in Olathe at Olathe Medical Center. He was completely supportive and encouraging the whole entire time. I at one point almost decided to just give up and do a c-section as I was concerned about the risks and he was the one who encouraged me to shoot for what my goal had been from day one. The reason I had a c-section with my first had nothing to do with the baby not being able to fit etc so I was a good candidate but no matter what he was supportive and attentive the whole time. I am leaving the Kansas City area as my husband is being transferred and he is one of the things I'll miss most about here if that tells you anything.:) He also does most of his own deliveries and even would call me himself after hours. He is amazing and I would recommend him to anyone!!!!! Good luck!

I had a vbac w/my 2nd. My doctor is Dr. Brenden Mitchell w/Women's Care. They have an office in Shawnee Mission and Overland Park. He let me decide what I wanted to do. Also, you need to knbow that several doc's won't do them due to malpractice issues and some hospitals have banned them. I believe Shawnee Mission will still do them. He was supportive, but it was based on the fact that I had a c-section in the first place since my child had been breach for the last 3 months of my pregnancy. I was a good candidate for a vbac. Good luck with your decision!

Hi A.!

I had my first kiddo c-section and when it came time to meet with my OB/GYM when I was pregnant with my second, he immediately asked me if I wanted to try VBAC for the second versus planning a c-section. I personally didn't mind the c-section idea, but he wanted me to know my options - including the benefits and risks - first before I made my decision. After three kids, I have been impressed by my doctor time and time with his level of caring, understanding, and explanation - he's a teacher, not just a doctor. If you are interested in his name and contact information, please shoot me an email.

Good luck!

Hi A.!
I go to For Women Only. It's in Overland Park located in the Medical Plaza (right next door to the hospital) I didn't know what area you were in. I really like it there. They treat you like a real human with real concerns. I see a mid-wife. Her name is Bridgete Webb. You can give them a call and see if they do VBACs. Their number is ###-###-####. Hope this helps!
