VBAC And C-section

Hi Moms,

My son was breech 7 years ago. I want to have a vbac this time and the OB says I am a good candidate. I just found out today though that they have to schedule a c-section at 40 weeks "just in case" I don't go into labor. I was surprised and wondering how hard and fast this is and others experiences. I don't mind doing this, but I would like to give it a few days after my due date, which is December 28th. Experiences?

What can I do next?

No experience other than calling on OBs for laboratory services. I think Doc is trying to get his year end all scheduled. Just what I've heard them say.

No, that is not VBAC friendly. Consider a new OB. Please contact your local ICAN chapter- www.ican-online.com to find support in your area.

I was an ICAN Chapter leader for years. I would advise women to "modify" the date of their last period so that they could buy themselves two weeks past EDD.

If you are forced to "schedule a C-section" for 40 weeks, on that morning, call the hospital and tell them your 7 year old has the flu and you will need to reschedule. The next time, your car is not starting, the next time, you have the flu...if you get where I am going.

I had a CBAC baby 5 years after my first baby. The CBAC was supposed to be a VBAC. I went 41 weeks and 2 days. Then I went into natural labor - for 40 hours - then he turned breech:) I am still happy to know that I went into labor on my own and he came when he was ready. He was a much different baby than my C-section baby who was a failed induction done at 40 weeks. C-section baby wasn't ready, had all kinds of trouble, and was super small. CBAC baby - normal size, nursed immediately, no medical troubles of any sort.

Good luck BB - feel free to message me if you need support or other resources.

I suppose there's no harm in scheduling it.
When the time comes closer to the date - if the baby is not in distress, is in a good position and you are not suffering from any complications (high blood pressure, etc) then I would want to wait a week or two longer.

Unless you did IVF (when you know EXACTLY when you conceived), then estimated any due date is always 2 weeks give or take - so 40 weeks could be 38 weeks or 42 weeks.
And - for some women - 42 weeks is perfectly natural for them.

I think it's pretty common. If you go too far past your due date, your chances of a successful VBAC go down, I think. It's usually pretty common to schedule a c-section just in case. You might be able to get them to go a couple extra days, but probably not too many. Might be nice to have the baby by the 30th anyway, rather than on New Year's Eve/Day.

Good luck and congrats.

They do it just so they have the time. I wouldn't worry about it now. You have plenty of time.

Not vbac friendly. Find yourself a midwife with vbac experience. Mine even does homebirths vbacs.

I had vbac when my oldest were 9. We didn't even discuss c-section since everything looked good and the reason for c in the first place was infant distress (one of my girls flipped and caught her cord around her neck). My vbac was a week after due date. I was supposed to go in for an ultrasound the day I had her to look for progress and maybe have to schedule a c-section just in case.

If you are not comfortable doing it then you may want to find another provider. My doctor did not schedule my c-section until I was 37 weeks, and that was after a failed inversion on my breeched daugther. They also did an ultrasound to make sure the baby was still breeched when I went into labor the night before my scheduled c-section. You have to be comfortable with your provider.

I highly recommend a new OB. You need as many people on your side as possible with a VBAC, the last thing you need is an OB who is setting you up to fail. My story is very similar to Susan K, my second was 10 days late. My first was a c-section after a failed induction at 39 weeks. The best thing you can do is collect support- an OB with an excellent VBAC success rate (you want something like 90%), a midwife, a doula. Educate yourself and educate your partner. I would also recommend looking into the VBAC rate of the hospital where you will deliver. My hospital tried to bully me into interventions several times. Not what you should have to deal with in labor!

If you educate yourself, you will learn about the variations in typical gestation, actual risks with VBAC (often identical to first time deliveries), and how to keep yourself healthy and low risk!!

I am happy to answer any questions or give you support. My doula would always remind me just to focus on having that natural delivery. If an emergency pops up, it will be out of your control, so there is no reason to worry or think about that. Set it aside, focus on the VBAC, focus on the fact that you can do it!!

i dunno. it does make sense to go ahead and get it on the calendar just in case. i'd be with you in wanting it to be a few days AFTER the due date, though.

I can't help much but I'm in a similar situation, only my son will be 9 1/2 when this one is due. I've only had one appointment so far and we didn't talk about it much, but they went over billing for C-section just as "standard procedure" and the nurse said I would have to discuss it with my dr. Sorry I can't help but I feel you - I am also one that doesn't want to go early, it always seems to me like babies that come in their own time are so much healthier and stronger. I'll be watching to see what others say! Good luck!

They can schedule it, but they can't force you to check in.

I was in a similar situation. My daughter, now 6, was breech so I had a C-section. Two years later I was pregnant with my son and my OB said I was a good candidate for a VBAC. It was important to me to give it a try. At the same time, my OB and I were on the same page that I would give it a shot but of course if any tearing or emergencies came up during the labor that I may need to have another C-section. It all worked out and I had the VBAC and I'm so happy that I did. We didn't schedule any C-section. My son was ten days past my due date and my OB didn't at any point push me to schedule a C-section (I don't think she even mentioned it). On the tenth day past my due date, they did schedule me for a induction but I ended up going into labor that day so they did not need to induce me. If you want to do a VBAC, I would definitely encourage you to try it and not let your OB pressure or rush you. My son was ten days late (8 lb, 10oz) and the VBAC turned out fine and I'm really glad it worked out. Good luck and stick to your guns!
