Valentine's Day Gifts for Special School Friends

My son and I were talking about valentine's day. I told him that it a day that you show your love and friendship with your family and friends. He is taking candy and cards to school for his entire class. He asked me if he could take something extra special for his friend Rachael. They have been BFF since the first wk of school.

So my question is should I let him pick something out? He is even willing to use his own money. Should I let him take it to school or have him give it to her after school? Thanks

He is 5 and in kindergarten.

What can I do next?

I would let him buy her a special gift with his own money if he wishes, but he should give it to her outside of school.

I hear what Christy Lee is saying, but it is bad manners to give one friend a special gift in front of all the other friends (except if it is a birthday party). Adults wouldn't do that, so why should children. Can you imagine a get together with all of your friends and you give each friend a pen, and then say to one friend "I like you the best so I got you a watch."

I just want to say, what a sweet boy you have.

How about you all bake some cookies together, he can send them for Rachel and her family.. But after school.

I have a unique perspective on this. I'll be shocked if I don't get flamed for it.

He should get her a special gift....and he should give it to her whenever he likes.

In the real world, not everyone gets a gift when gifts are given. It's okay to teach our kids that we can have special friends that we treat differently, better even, than others. And it's okay that other kids see it. Good friends DESERVE special treatment.

Yes, someone might get their feelings hurt. But in the real world, everyone is NOT treated equally, and children should not be made to feel guilty for not giving something special to people who aren't their very good friends. The other children will be okay.

I think it's lovely and thoughtful that your son wants to give something special to his BFF.
