looking for some opinion or guidance on a product choice; leapster2 or the didj?? have an almost 7 year old that wants everything for christmas (don't they all!) and rather than the video games i am leaning toward a leap pad product...hoping for a little education with his fun : )
but not sure which is better suited as they both cover his age...anyone have either?
thanks!!

I have 2 leapsters and have looked into getting a didj for my kids. I think it is great to be able to plug it to the computer and download-according to the commercials. If you are looking to spend the money for it, Then i would go for the didj. I think it will grow more with your son and it is supposed to teach more as well. My kids think the graphics they have on the didj are "cool".

Last year, my daughter received the Leapster mobile unit that can hook into a TV. She is now six, and has used the Leapster a lot, but it seems she is already outgrowing it. If you look at the games, they are mostly geared toward Pre-K and Kindergarten. Whenever my daughter and I go to Target, she spends all her time on the Didj demo, and has asked for one. So I recommend Didj over Leapster 2.

My son received the original Leapster for his 5th birthday. We have just about every cartridge that you can get for it (look for them on clearance, I paid as little as $7 for most). He will be 9 in January and still plays with the leapster. My 2 and 4 y/o also play with it regularly.

I am not familiar with the didj at all. I would suggest researching the cost of the cartridges for both and weighing your options. Also, someone mentioned the downloading capability w/ didj. Check the box for the Didj system requirements to use the product with your computer. We purchased the V-Tech computer last year and cannot use it with our computer (a selling point for us) because it is not compatible with Vista ... and that is the only program that is installed on computers these days. HTH!

For a 7 year old, go with the didj. Leapster is more geared towards preschoolers.

My kids outgrew the Leapster in less than a year.

I just bought the leapster 2 for my daughter's birthday. She just turned 6 and I am worried that she will outgrow this system soon. I also have a 3 year old son and wanted them to have the same game system to eliminate fighting over playing the game. The Digj has games for older children and allows you to customize the games. I suggest this for a 7 year old so that he will not outgrow it too fast. Do not get a Nintendo?? because they are too confusing for young children. My kids both love the leapster 2, however.

I don't know anything about the didj, but my daughter had a leapster product that you could buy books and chips for as the child grows. She played with it all the way through 5th grade which was the last grade/subject I was able to find for the system. I know the product has changed over the years so I'd check to see how it can be updated. My daughter would have used it more if it grew with her.
