I haven't gotten a real haircut in years. I'm about to this Friday at a nice salon. My appointment is with the owner and the cut is going to be about $65. How much do I tip? The last time I got a haircut, I believe it was $25 and I tipped $5 to the stylist. Not sure what to do this time. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
P.S. - To those that are outraged with the price: It's a nice salon and I requested someone to help me figure out what to do with my hair (they suggested the owner). That's why it will be $65. I have a gift certificate, so I don't mind spending it!
Thanks for all the responses! It was well worth the $65, so I did tip the owner. But not before asking the receptionist. She informed me that their owners are not insulted with or without tips, so I could do what I felt was necessary. But I did tip since they were so nice and did a great job. And it was a great salon, so I would recommend it for anyone who isn't so outraged by the price (just let me know).

Owner or not we always tip. If it is a small in-home salon we just do $5 tip as the cuts are only about $20. At an actual salon cuts are only $30-$35 depending on where you go. I usually give $5-$7 to them depending on the final result of the cut. I don't know of any place that charges $65, and if I did I know I wouldn't be going there.
"Don't tip the owner" my goodness, that is from what, the 50's or maybe even an old wives tale. Tip what you feel is right. If you're going to tip 20%, i'd give 15% to the stylist and 5% to the shampoo girl. I do agree that $65 for a haircut is quite much but if you're willing to pay, then it should be the BEST cut you've ever had! Good luck!
$13.00 is a good tip. I usually give 20%. $10.00 is 15% which is also sufficient for a salon you don't frequent regularly.
Am I the only one that thinks $65 is expensive.I recently got my hair highlighted and cut and the cost was only $50.I love what she did for my hair.She has a salon in her home,so it would be less than going to a larger place,however,wow,I wouldn't pay $65.
I usually do 15-20% just like at a restaurant, and then if its really awesome I give a little extra.

It used to be the ettiquette that you never tip the salon owner, even if they are the one that does your hair. That has changed over the years and has become more acceptable to tip them. Some still feel that owners should not be tipped. If there is a receptionist there, you could ask her if the owner takes tips, so not to offend them.. If she/he does then I would definitely give between $7-$10.

Try to relax and have fun at your hairdressers. Make sure to explain exactly what you want, especially with the owner doing your hair, they tent to get sizzor happy. From what I know you are not suppose to tip the owner, that is why they charge that kind of money for a cut. You can tip the shampoo girl, about 5 bucks.
$65 is about right if you live in the philly suburbs. lol.. i saw some of the responses, and got a kick out of it. I wish it was $20 to get your haircut around here. i do agree that you should tip the owner. I would recommend 15-20% too.
$65 seems a bit pricey! is it a real high end salon? I think I pay $25 incl the tip for mine.
WOW, I'm glad I read upon these responses since I found most of them interesting. I wasn't even aware that there was an "rule" not to tip the owner. I travel to the city in NY, to get my haircut every 8 months or so if I am lucky to get out there and my hair is done by the owner, whom I'll only let him do. It's worth the drive and the money (2hours away and it's twenty dollars for a wash, cut & style)He takes his time and I have been tipping him since. Opps?

Since you haven't had a cut in quite some time I would make sure to bring in some photos from magazines or online of haircuts that you like. That way you can show the new hairdresser exactly what you are looking for. If you are paying that kind of money for a hair cut then 15 to 20 percentis a good tip. Just because they are the owner doesn't mean they shouldn't get a tip if they do a good job. I hope you like your new cut.

I currently work in a salon and most of my owner's clients tip her. They have been going to her for years (some people before she even opened her own place), so they feel that they should.
If you do decide to tip your stylist--regardless of who it is--the general rule is to tip the same as you would your waiter. So 15-20% based on how happy you feel with the service performed.

Generally I usually go with the table for tipping waitresses, I will give 15%, for good and if I really like the cut I would 20%. So if your just satisfied, I would give $10.00. Hope this helps.

In my opinion, it depends on how good they did the job. I think $10 is fair for a $65 hair cut. If they did a terrific job, then give the 20%, but if you hate your new do, why would you waste another $15? I would give 10% minimum even if I was not thrilled with the result, unless it was horrible. I do the same for waitresses and all tips. The better the service, the better the tip.

I always tip 20% so your tip would be $12-13. If you have a long wait, or feel you are being rushed, you could bump it down to $10--no less!
The shampoo chick gets a few bucks as well.
I think it is now ALWAYS appropriate to tip an owner. That old rule no longer applies!

I know they say don't tip the owner, but I used to work on the "inside" years ago in my younger day, and I remember our owner complaining that it would be nice every once and a while to get a tip. Just because they are the owner we assume they make tons of money. Don't forget they have to pay the business bills. I would tip. I would base my tip on a few things. A tip is given because someone gave you excellent service. They went the extra mile to see that you were well taken care of and happy. Look in the mirror after your haircut. How do you feel, how do you look? Did you enjoy the time spent with the person that did your hair? Base the tip on that.
If you hate the work they did....don't tip.

If it is a salon on in her home I would tip her about $10-$15. If it is a salon that is more buisness like I would only tip her $10. Also it depends on how much you love your hair when she is through.
Technically, the owner of the salon doesn't get a tip. However, I get my haircut by the owner of a salon and I always tip him as I would anyone else, 20%. I just think it's the right thing to do.

I worked in a salon for many years. I heard people say that you shouldn't tip the owner, but I think that is a myth. For a $65 cut, a $10 tip would be fine. If your also getting coloring done in addition to the cut, I'd say $15 to $20.
First off, for a nice salon with an appt with the owner, $65 seems normal to me. Second, I once read an article (a long time ago) that you don't need to tip the owner of the salon as much as a staff stylist, but I'm not sure what the proper ettiquette is anymore. I would probably still tip 15%, 20% if you really like the results and see if they refuse or protest that it's too much. I feel it's always better to be generous than to be stingy and appear unappreciative of their hard work.

WOW! Tons of different opinions on this one! I am of the opinion that when the owner of a salon does your hair, you do NOT tip. Do whatever you are comfortable with.
