Three Month Old Cries When Pooping

I have a three month old son that cries when he poops. I was solely breastfeeding up until two weeks ago because I had to return to work. He is now primarily on formula and I breastfeed him at night and in the morning. For the last week or so, he has been crying when he poops. He is not constipated because his poops are not hard. I am worried that there could be something wrong. Is this normal? Should I change the formula? Last night he cried and cried while pooping and I massaged his tummy and lifted his legs, thinking that it would help for some reason. Just want to see what other moms think before I call the doctor.

Hi Chritine,

I am a mom of 2 children and have taken care of MANY infants in my daycare. I would change formula. I did an extensive research on the different ingredients in the different brands when my daughter was an infant. Switch to Carnation / Best Baby. The protein is Whey, not Casein. Casein protein is found in cows milk, and is very h*** o* certain tummies. Also, the iron content plays a huge role in digestion in some infants. A GREAT website to get more info is www.askdrsears.com - Dr. Sears has been around forever. I bought his book 11 yrs ago when I was a new mother, and have used his advise and knowledge ever since. He has 3 sons whom are also pediatricians and one specializes in nutrition.

Take care,
P.

Is there any way you can pump? I know when you do solids, it changes the gut flora so that could be what's happening. Maybe he doesn't like that brand of formula and it gives him a tummy ache? I only nursed mine so not sure on the formula.

Hi C.~ It sounds like it's the formula that's causing your son trouble and since he apparently was doing well with your breastmilk can you pump some milk for your baby boy? It's not that hard, will very likely solve his problem and also keep your milk supply from getting low. Since you're already nursing in the morning and at night, one of the smaller, relatively inexpensive pumps should should suffice in providing what he needs during the day. I hope your little one gets some relief soon and wish you both all the best!!

Is there a little bit of fresh blood? Its not uncommon for babies to get an anal fissure. This is a tear in the rectum and very painful (i had one after childbirth). All it takes is one hard stool to create it and it reopens with every b.m. Check for blood. There are medications to bring blood flow to the area and help relax the sphincter. They can become chronic also and require surgery (ouch, mine did). Try and take a good look at the anus, you may be able to see if if its there. If he cries before the bowel movement this is probably not the case, but if he cries during and after thats a tell tail sign.

hi
i jsut went thru the same thing and its heart breaking...
here are a couple of things you need to look into
did you recently give him the Roto viruse vaccine? this will cause painfull pooping sometimes.
request for a GI doctor and have his poop tested for blood. its realy easy, just take a poop diaper with you to his Ped or the GI doctor and they will run a hemocult test. the result are imediate- if there is blood, he might have a food allergy
if it is a food allergie? try switching to a soy formula and if you are still pumping/breast feeding do not eat any dairy. Whey and Casin are BOTH dairy so stay away from both (someone mentioned below that they were different). educate your self in what has dairy so you can stay away form those foods.
if he is allergic to both soy and dairy, then try Neocate formula- its dairy and soy free.
my baby turned out to be allergic to the protein in both soy and dairy so i have continued to breast feed her. if you have any questions email me
good luck

Call the Ped right away! He should be able to help identify the problem and come up with a solution. I would try a sensitive organic formula, if not on onje already. However, if at all possible, you should try to pump and feed him your own BM. Good luck!

Hello! I agree with the other mom who suggested maybe a change in formula, but also, keep up with massaging the tummy and putting up his legs - it is a form of infant massage and helps with gas and pooping. I literally fold my son in half - I tap his face with his feet and he laughs hysterically while he toots away! He also just finished his "I am holding my poop in" stage - like yours, he "seemed" constipated, not pooping everyday suddenly and straining and arching his back. But .... when he did go - it was a lot and it was not hard. It lasted about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. We were also starting cereal at that time, so I began making my cereal with prune juice and water, rather than formula or breastmilk.

I hope some of this helps. Have a good day!
