Thoughts & Prayers to Franklin High School in Pittsburgh

It was very scary for me to read this post today because I have a niece going to a Pittsburgh high school. We know it is not Murraysville because they live Sewickley. It sure has been scary to read about it though.

This makes me glad my daughter is out of school now and in college, however, the same thing could happen at a college.... we've seen that too.

I just pray and trust for the safety of my daughter and other children.

I comforts me slightly that my kids have a cell phone and God forbid something like this happens, I hope they could contact me.

I am so sorry. I hope that everyone is okay. I feel for the stabber. I am probably odd-man out here, but when people feel that desperate that they have to take that desperate of a measure to get noticed or be heard, I feel for them. I hope they get they help they need.

What would I do? I don't know. I really don't know. Tyler works close to our oldest son's school. I'm closest to the elementary school. I think I would run to the school, even if I would have to wait.

I can't know how I would handle it. This is one of those things that it's easy to say what you would do in a hypothetical situation... But when it becomes reality, you act in the heat of the moment. I think I would most likely head to whatever perimeter the authorities set up, and wait there for them to contact me; I would be able to stay out of the way, but still be able to reach my DD as soon as possible.

It's sad how often his seems to be happening. I honestly think it has become so out of control because it becomes so sensationalized. I wish the media would just let people know what happened, what is being done about it, and a vague idea of who did it. (Another student, teacher, random person...) no more detail than that. They need to stop making the attacker famous, and focus on the victims instead.

Back in the day before emails and texting and cell phones, when we got in from school, our parents found out about what went on. Trust me we had lots going on, especially where I grew up. Yes even back then there were stabbings, bomb threats, packages left u attended etc. Every time something happens its in the news for days on end, and I feel this encourages others who might be thinking about doing something. This news frenzy almost gives them permission to seek their 15 minutes of fame. Does that make sense. Before cable news, things happened and life went on.

It's just heartbreaking to see these parents in Murrysville waiting for their kids, being told to stay away...keep the routes open for emergency vehicles.
I don't know how I'd "handle" it.
Gut instinct is to run there and grab your kid.
Intellectually, you know you have to allow the school to implement their emergency plan. (How sad they have to use the plan at all.)
Schools are supposed to be safe places.
I don't know when our kids lives will have a higher price tag.
I think any changes to the alarming trend of more school violence will come from moms.
Metal detectors are the answer. O. door in at each school. O. employee per school to monitor.
Damn the cost and the time delay.
How many school violence incidents have their been since Columbine?
Too many.
This cannot become the new normal.
