The Embarrassing Topic of Hemorroids

I have never had a hemorrhoid before, although I've had two kids. I just had my last one 3 months ago and got stomach flu last week. And I've been attending spin/cycling classes everyday. Well, right after my last class on Saturday I had a big hemorrhoid "show up". And now it's started bleeding a lot and hasn't shrunken any - even though I've been using Preparation H and Tucks like crazy. I've tried soaking in a warm bath and even ice, but it's still there and still bleeding. Anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to see a surgeon yet - because this is my first time and that's the only suggestion my gyn. gave me.

So What Happened?

Thank you guys for your feedback and advice. I ended up going to see Dr. Peyton in Coppell today. Of course, mine were the worse kind you can get. Anyway, she performed a non-surgical procedure called infrared coagulation and I feel a lot better. I have to go for 2 more treatments, but hopefully by then I'll be healed.

A.,

I have had horrible hemorrhoids with both my babies...I had them so bad with my last baby that the dr had to put me on bed rest. There is a prescription cream that I had to see a specialist to get...it is called Analpram HC. It works WONDERFUL. You might want to call Dr. Eric Kaplan he is at Plano Presby and he is a GREAT dr. that is who gave me this medicine. Mine never bleed, so I'm not familiar with that.

Best of luck...

Had the same thing happen to me (without the birth of a child) same symptoms etc. My Dr wrote me a prescription for Proctofoam HC. I used it for approx a week and everything went away. It was great stuff, much better than prep H. Hope this helps. Good Luck

You've probably had the hemorrhoid all along, but it is probably an internal one that has swollen enough to be bulging out after giving birth and the stomach bug. You are doing all the right things. I would include drinking lots of water and eating a fiber rich diet. If the hemorrhoid hurts when you are up and about during the day, try rubbing a little Vaseline on it, so the friction from walking will not irritate it more. Stay off your feet as much as possible for the next few days and don't lift anything heavy. It will go away with time, probably a few more days. I've had one since the birth of my first, but it rarely causes me much trouble unless I have a stomach bug or am standing a whole lot for long periods of time. good luck!

I swear this worked like a charm for me - and everyone I've told thanks me later.

BUTT PASTE. find it in the diaper rash isle. I know they have it at Target. Gone in 24 hours. Never failed me.

Sounds like what I had. I had one with my second pregnancy. It bled and hurt whenever I sat down. You need to go see a doctor. I was diagnosed with a bloodclot in my hemorrhoid and the colon/rectal specialist had to remove the clot to allow the hemorrhoid to heal/shrink. It's A. in office procedure. They numb the area first so you don't feel anything during the procedure and it hurts most the first 2-3 days but after that its a dramatic improvement. I used the cream, tucks, and foam but it didn't resolve my problem they only provided temporary relief. Whatever you choose. Good Luck.

I suggest you see a colon/ rectal specialist. It could be a fissure- and whether it needs surgery or not they can prescribe creams that MAY help, if that doens't help you'll feel much better once surgery is done.... I waited a year in pain- what a waste!

Surgery really should be a last option at this point and I would be upset if that is what my ob/gyn told me. You need to call her back and say you want a prescription for Hemmoroid Suppositories. You insert these and the medicine is more intense and RIGHT where you need it and will reduce the swelling. But, even with these, it takes a few days. I'm not sure how many you can do. Usually just one does it for me. But just last week, I had a problem and had to do one one night and one two nights later. I have had hemmoroid problems with both of my pregnancies, so trust me, I KNOW.

Also, there is a foam that can be inserted called "Proctofoam". It's okay. The suppositories are better. But, you want prescription strength, I think. Not the over the counter stuff.

I had hemorriods with my last pregnancy and my dr. perscribed a steroid cream that shrunk them down. It really helped. They went away on their own after the pregnancy, but I would think you could try something OTHER than surgery to see if they will go away on their own with some other form of treatment. Get a 2nd opinion.

I did the ice and got a 'donut' pillow to sit on at work. But a nutritionist suggested Bilberry (1 3x/day at first; after a week, 1 2x/day).... it's a black gelcap in the vitamin section. Within 2 weeks mine were gone. There are a lot of 'topical' things to put on it - I used Vicks - once it quit burning, it felt great. But the ointments only mask the symptoms - they don't address the cause. Bilberry is an effective preventive - it's healthy for you too.....doesn't affect anything if you're nursing.

Good luck.

The first time I had problems with my hemorrhoids, I had a thrombosed hemorrhoid. The doctor lanced it in his office and I didn't have any more problems for a while. In 1996, I had to have the surgery and the only thing I will say about that is IF you have to have the surgery, go with the laser surgery, not the actual cutting. I didn't (it was new at the time I had my surgery). I will say that I didn't have any other options. Nothing was working to relieve the pain or swelling. I wish I could tell you that there was a 'quick fix', but there's really not. Try stool softeners and don't strain when having a bowel movement. Newer conservative treatments such as topical nifedipine show promise over traditional conservative treatments such as lidocaine ointment; however, they have not yet been shown to decrease time to symptom resolution or frequency of recurrence as compared to surgical excision.
Good luck and I hope it resolves without having to have surgical intervention.

Preperation H will work just takes time. Even the smallest one can be very uncomfortable. A man at work did emergency surgery and said it was not that bad. The doctor can prescribe something stronger ( a cream as well) I love Halopenias but every time that is what causes mine. So beware. Also had a huge one time deal where I got diaera and got huge burning from them. So good luck. Never got them when I was pg either. G. W

I use proctofoam...it's a Rx and it works really well. Prep H and tucks wont cure it, it will just help with the burning, sometimes they make mine worse :\ Ask your family doctor instead of your gyn. He/she will be able to give you more options other than surgery! Good Luck!

I just read the response below me, which is funny because I have also used the suppositories and they DIDN'T work that well for me, I had to do two weeks of them, twice a day...and this is gross but a lot of times they "leaked" like a greasy substance, I know thats nasty and I'm sorry for saying it but it happened! lol, so the foam worked better for me then it did for her so you may just need to try both and see which works best for you!
