I have a 3 1/2 year old son who is enrolled in swim lessons at the Westerville Community Center. He has been in lessons, since he was a baby and has no fear of the water. I have mixed feelings about the lessons there and was wondering if anyone has taken lessons with a child this age and they actually learned to swim? We are past blowing bubbles etc... and I want to take him somewhere where they will actually teach him how to transition to swimming unassisted. Does anyone have a location where this has been their experience? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. By the way we live in the Lewis Center area, but would be willing to go to Delaware, Worthington, Dublin etc...

What can I do next?

Your son is definitely old enough to be able to swim. I taught swimming lessons as a college student and, as long as the child is not grabbing the teacher in a throat hold terrified of the water, he can learn to swim at this age unassisted. In fact, you may have a short window of time to accomplish this before he knows to be afraid again. Then you will have a problem. I would recommend private lessons. The problem with having him take group lessons is that I would expect you have a bunch of kids in there who are afraid and who are therefore slowing his progress. They might also make him afraid later.

Call your local Y or wherever swimming lessons are offered and ask if any of the instructors give private lessons. It will cost you a little more money, but in the long run it may save you money if he just learns to swim.

If you are like me, a busy mom, it will also save you time. Why take him to a bunch of group lessons if he can learn to swim with 5-10 private lessons!

Good luck.

There is a new indoor pool in Hilliard called Aquatic Adventures. I was thinking about signing my 4 year up for swim lessons and went to their website for more information. Try it out...

The Powell YMCA has a great swim program. My 4 year old just finished their "Pikes" class and she learned a lot. The next level is "Eels." I'd suggest with your son's experience already in the water, that he'd be a eel as well.
You can check it all out online...

I too have a 3.5 yo enrolled at Westerville and have had mixed reviews on the classes he's taken (this is his third unassisted and he had one assisted (when he was younger) but that has been due to the instructors more than anything I think- some seem to be far more effective than others. I second the private lessons suggestion, or taking what he's learned and trying to teach him on your own this summer. If you are interested in private lessons, Jill, an infant instructor at Westerville, is wonderful with the babies and if we entertain private lessons for our 3.5 yo, we'll ask her first. She's been doing lessons for 30 years and is terrific ("swimming" the babies from day 1). She is taking this session off but you can see her at her lessons on Tuesday evenings starting back up next session, at the foot of the water slides.

Both of my kids learned around age 4 by taking private swim lessons at Metro Athletic Club near Frantz Rd in Dublin. They were quite fearful of swimming and now are fish! The private lessons are pricey BUT, that entire 1/2 hour lesson is the instructor working with just your kid and at their level! They will progress as quickly as your child will and not have to wait on the rest of the class. We have taken from Cori Choi and my kids love her but, I've heard all the instructors are great! Metro ###-###-#### Good luck!!
