Suggestions on Footwear

My daughter is 10 months old and will not keep socks or shoes (when I attempt to put shoes on her she curls her toes and then immediately tries to get out of them). Any suggestions since winter will be here in a couple of months and she needs her bare feet covered with something.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone's responses. We have successfully been wearing the Target style Robeez and actually Robeez for about a month now and they actually stay on her feet and she does not even seem bothered by wearing them. It is nice to not have a barefooted child all the time when we go places. Thanks again!

try pedipeds. They are great for early walkers (and those learning to walk). Easy to get on... not so easy to get off (especially with little fingers).

Look for outfits that come with attached foot coverings - I know Carter's make some up to 12 months. Shoes are not really good for those learning to walk - they have better balance and gripping power when barefoot.

Have you heard of Robeez? They are like leather moccasins, that protect their feet but wear like shoes. They CAN NOT get those things off. We used them on my 1st born when she was 10 months and winter had hit, no matter what she tried, she couldn't get them off her feet. So she eventually gave up and wore them without a problem. I am looking to get some now for my 3rd dd, she's 11 months and walking, but likes to pull off her socks too.

I would suggest Robeez. Target has a version of them that are nice and about half the price. Pedipeds is another brand that is the same style.

My son hated shoes and I had trouble finding shoes to ever fit him. Robeez were the only thing that would fit his wide, thick feet AND he kept them on. There is elastic at the ankle that makes it hard for baby to pull them off. The best thing, though? They are actually good for walking, since the sole of the shoe is protective, yet soft enough to bend like the natural bend of the foot when walking. They are also easy to get on when baby tries the toe-curling!

I'll join in on the Robeez suggestion. However, I will also tell you that when it gets cold, you may have better luck keeping shoes on your child. Something about the weather makes it easier to keep them in shoes.

I like the suggestion of footie jumpers. I would put socks on my son and then put the jumper on him. It gave his little feet some extra warmth during the winter.

Another idea would be the "squeeky shoes." Now, these would drive me nuts after a while, but the little ones LOVE them.

Blessings,
M.

Check out Robeez. They are great footwear for little ones. You can get them at Stride Rite or their website www.robeez.com Both of my kids lived in these. They are my all time favorite little kids shoes.

Hi Traci.
The best shoe I found for a 10 month old, was suggested to me by an ER nurse. My son was learning to walk and had fallen and hit his mouth on his wagon and cut the inside of his mouth. They sell them at Target, in the baby department, not the shoe department. They are a flat, soft sole shoe that has elastic around the ankle area. He couldnt pull them off. The soft sole allows them to feel the floor, but yet still have theyre feet protected. They are about $12.99. They come in different colors and shapes. Monkey, dog, sailboat, cat and others.

Hope this helps.

Try those Robees soft sole shoes. You can order them on line or there are some stores that are carrying them now. They come in lots of colors. My son wore them. They are nice and comfortable. My son's Dr told me about them

My daughter was the exact same way. Robeez was the answer for us. They were the only shoes that she would not/could not pull off. A godsend since we lived in New York at the time. Cold and snow for a few months. Gotta keep their tootsies covered!

Good luck.

Hi Traci, I hope this post makes you laugh. I have a 22 yr old daughter who has not wanted shoes since she was born. Other than a pair of flipflops, she keeps her shoes in her car to slip on when she goes to work. As soon as she walks out of the job, she slips her shoes off and is barefoot again. She must have inherited that from my sister who is late 50's and is barefoot year round also. She too, slips off her shoes when she is at work at her desk. She wears the shoes into the building and out.
When my DD was a baby, we were somehow always losing one shoe. Winter was approaching. I put on the 18 mo old's socks and shoes on for the drive to the shoe store. When we arrived, she was barefoot. I searched all over that car and under the seats. I asked her where her shoes were. She smiled and pointed to the window. As I drove back around the loop around the city, in the middle of a 6 lane highway was a tiny white shoe. We returned to the shoe store where DD allowed the shoes to be fitted. When I said we'd buy them, baby took off the shoes, put them in the box and carried them out the store. Good luck! ;)

Robeez are great. I think Target sells a similar shoe (I think this is what someone has already mentioned). They are super soft leather & have elastic around the ankles. Another idea is light up shoes. I don't know if they make them for feet that small, I'm sure they do. I think most kids like light up shoes!

My daughter is 13mo and still hates wearing shoes, especially if they have hard soles that don't allow her little feet to bend and move naturally. Try finding some cloth soles, or leather soled shoes that won't restrict her movement. It's not good for such young kids to wear hard soled shoes, anyway.

Try using either the Robeez or the Ministar/Bobux (at Target) shoes. My daughter hates socks and shoes, but doesn't seem to mind these. I plan to get her some boots from one of these companies also.

I wouldn't worry about it. If her feet get too cold she'll let you know. If there isn't any danger of her feet getting hurt I wouldn't force shoes on her. I never liked wearing socks/shoes and would always pull them off. I still prefer to be barefoot and only wear socks/shoes when necessary. My son was like that too as a baby and only kept socks/shoes on if he was outside walking around. He's 14 yrs old now and the first thing he does when he gets inside is take off his socks/shoes.
If she must have something on her feet try moccassins (hmm, I don't think I spelled that right!). You can also take her shoe shopping and try on several different shoes until you find one that she either can't pull off or doesn't try to pull off.

ROBEEZ are awsome!! My son couldn't even fit into shoes because of the shape of his foot (wide with a hich arch) but the Robeez would stay on. They were also so soft, he didn't mind keeping them on and when they get dirty, they are safe to wash in the washing machine and dryer!
Also, Target has "imitation Robeez" that are half the price and work just as good (only they are a tiny bit narrower).

There really is not need for her to wear anything on her feet right now. Even when she is learning to walk. If she is inside your house, she can (should) walk barefoot. Of course if she wants to walk outside, that is the only time she will need shoes and that is only if there is a possibility of her injuring herself or it is extremely cold.

She will eventually grow out of the rejection of socks and then shoes. Just keep trying.

Have you tried Robeez or some other soft soled shoe? It keeps soft on and baby will have a hard time getting them off.

Honestly, if it was that much of a battle, I wouldn't worry about socks or shoes. When she is inside she won't need them and if she is outside you can just wrap her up in a blanket. She also could be perfectly happy with something on her feet in a few months.

My son was (and still is) the same way...and we lived in Denver when he was that age (in Corpus now so winter isn't an issue!).

I finally resorted to keeping him in blanket sleepers when we went outside in the winter (Jan. b-day so he was 10-months old in NOVEMBER!)...and mostly in footed clothing indoors. The attached feet made it more difficult for him to kick off his socks when it was especially cold. He got to wear the cute clothes under the blanket sleeper and I could take it off if we were indoors...and he would be barefoot within seconds when I did that!

As for shoes, I tried everything...boots, athletic shoes, those expensive ones with the elastic strap that wraps around their instep and over the top of the foot...he escaped them all!

I read something recently that said to rub the back of their leg (their calf) and it will help relax their toes.
The advice came a little too late for me, but I will say that my 13 month old stopped doing that about a month ago.
Good luck!
