Suddenly Painful Breasts While Breastfeeding?

Hey! I have been breastfeeding my little girl for about 7.5 months and I absolutely love it. She started solids at about 5/6 months and now eats them 2-3 times a day. The past 2-3 days my breast have become painfully sore. She has not been eating any differently at all. It feels almost as if they are bruised or something. I was just wondering if this is normal or what this might mean? I havent had a period at all since the last one I got pregnant from (so about 16 months :) ) Also, everytime I have a let down it seriously hurts too (doesnt matter the breast). Is this just my period coming back or what? I took a pregnancy tests just to be on the safe side and it was negative. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the answers! Im trying to use the heating/cooling pads right now to see if that makes a difference first so i dont have to make an unnecessary trip to the doctor. If its still not better tomorrow then Im going to make an appointment. O and also, I just remembered it makes me feel really nauseus when I breastfeed too. I dont know if its important but I thought I might bring it up too. After Im done breastfeeding it eventually goes away but its always brought on by that.

Yeah. Mastitis is probably the culprit. Call your doc and get it delt with before you start to feel really awful! I got this with my oldest when I returned to work. At first it was just really painful, especially during let down of milk. The next day, I felt so bad I didn't want to get out of bed (fever, chills, body ache). I went the my OB/GYN and got a scrip for some antibiotics and knocked it out without a problem. I got it again with my youngest and knew what to do right away so it never got to the horrible stage. Good luck!

If you think it's mastitis, you can also go to The Vitamin Shoppe and they have tinctures for mastitis. Two droperfuls in a glass of water and you'll feel the effects within a couple of hours (if that).

I've nursed three babies and the only times I have hurt like that was with mastitis and pregnancy. Since you've taken a pregnancy test, it's probably mastitis. However mastitis usually causes flu like symptoms after a day or so, it's unmistakable. (or at least it was for me) Honestly the pain your describing sounds more like what I experienced when I got pregnant with my third unexpectantly while nursing my second. False negatives can occur with preg. tests, so if the pain doesn't stop or start looking more like mastitis take another test to be sure.

Hello! I have nursed six children and have different pain experiences with each child. Usually when my breast became painful, I was about to get a breast infection or had a plugged duct and did not know it. I had a tendancy to get busy and not drink enough water. To get rid of a breast infection, I would drink water in excess (I hated drinking that much water!) I think I also drank cranberry juice and made sure that I ate a LOT of greens. I also would take naps even though I did not want to carve out time to do that. Hot baths and coconut oil (which helps with many things) might relieve some pain. (When having a full blown out breast infection, I would run a high fever and be in an extreme amount of pain! But if I took care of myself, it would pass within two days.) Flushing out the bad stuff or bacteria that grows takes a lot of fluid in and a LOT of nursing out! NURSE A LOT! My two cents for what it is worth!

If it is mastisis, do not use cold. Get in the shower and run hot water over it and massage, massage, massage towards the nipple. Hopefully milk will leak. If there is a tender spot...massage it and it may hurt a LOT. Be gentle....but this will break up the clogged milk duct.

I got lots of them....but learned that while breastfeeding I did a quick massage every morning in the hot shower.

My breasts never hurt when my period returned (and when it does, it is very sporadic for several months).

Perhaps you have some clogged ducts? Try a warm compress on them and see if that helps, or stand in a warm shower and gently massage them to express small quantities of milk out.

I'm thinking, that because your daughter is nursing the same, but is also eating foods now, that perhaps she isn't emptying the milk all the way so you have some engorgement. This article below can help:

Could be mastitis, but you would usually also have fever/chills. If it is mastitis, you need to continue nursing to get through it.

warm compresses can help, it sounds like a blocked duct. A blocked duct could lead to mastitis if not cleared. Call your OB if it does not get better, and I would suggest to call sooner rather than later!

This sounds just like thrush, mastitis usually presents with a specific sore spot and a fever. Thrush particularly hurts when the milk lets down and while the baby is nursing. Go see your doctor. There are great no-sugar diets you can go on in addition to the meds, but the meds work FAST. Look at the inside of your baby's mouth and see if she has it too, there will be a white film you can't wipe off all over her tongue and cheeks. You are more likely to have thrush if you tend to get vaginal yeast infections, too. Good luck.
