Still Leaking After Four Months

I had my son in October 2008 and I breastfed and pumped for two months but had to stop because of possible food allergies. It has now been four months since I stopped pumping and breastfeeding and my breasts are still leaking! When I don't wear a bra, I end up leaking after about five minutes and it continues off and on until I put a bra on. I am tired of wearing a bra 24/7. I tried Sudafed to dry things up, but it made my nose really hurt, so I only did that for about two days. Any suggestions? Thank you so much!!!!!

What can I do next?

I strictly pumped for 4 months straight (5 or 6 times a day)so I produced a lot of milk. When I started to dried up about 3 weeks ago, I tried the cabbage leaves just for comfort. I didn't think they worked but I would suggest you try because it works for some people. I took bendaryl to help with drying up. I also put a very tight sports bra on and then bound myself with an ace bandage for about 3 days. It helped me to dry up. I don't leak at all. I have noticed I get a little out of my nipples but nothing to be concerned about. Good luck.

Cabbage. Seriously. You put the cabbage leaves inside your bra right on your breasts. I don't know why it works, but it does.

Sage will also dry you up. Sage herbs or sage tea. But cabbage works faster.

WishGarden Herbs makes a sage based tincture for drying up milk. You can order online, or I think I have seen it at Vitamin Cottage.

If you really want it to go away, they have a prescription that might help, bromocriptine. It lowers your prolactin hormone level, which is responsible for the production of breast milk. Mine has always been high, so I was on that med to get pregnant. It does have some bad side effects (dizziness, nausea, etc) so I just got an oral prescription and my dr. said to take it as a vaginal suppository to reduce the side effects. I would use this only as a last resort.

Try parsley whether it is in capsule form or tea form, it will help.

Hi L.,

While I don't have any recommendations to dry your milk supply out, try to be patient. I have also been leaking since weening my 2nd son, and that was 6 months ago!! My doc said it is not abnormal for it to take up to a year!
Best of luck and blessings to you and your little one!

Try wrapping your breasts in an ace bandage wrap. It helped dry me up in about 4 days. It works wonders! (at least it did for me)

I'd check at Whole Foods to see if they have something to help dry you up. They seem really knowledgeable and are always helpful. GL!

L.,

It's not unusual to leak for a while, but it can be annoying!
Motherlove makes a sage tincture which we carry at Bosom Buddies at both stores in the Denver area and can be ordered online.

try cabbage leaves. Place them inside your bra and change them a couple of times a day. Trust me on this one. It sounds crazy but it's true.
