Or bannanas, for that matter...getting ready to start 6-month old breast-fed baby on solids and wondering about your experiences with what you started with. Tradition says rice cereal, new thought says veggies, and a friend says bannanas. Just curious. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I started with rice and oat cereal at 6 months, I think our Pedi said it was best for the adjusting belly to start with something basic and work up to the veggies and fruit. For us, bananas constipated my son as an infant and I always had to combine it with apples or pears.

We started with one feeding in the morning for the first week or two, and then added lunch and then a couple weeks later added dinner. At this age/stage you need to start gradually and only add one new food at a time to be able to monitor any allergies and/or intolerance for flavor or taste. It wasn't until about 9 months that we were into a 3-meal day, and I still breastfed on demand and before meals per my son's Pedi.

This link was my best friend during this time:

Just remember that an infants digestive system is fragile and needs the introduction period to the food before jumping into it full force. I found out SO many things about my sons ability to tolerate foods, and which ones would cause gas or upset his tummy. Do some research and ask your kiddos doctor if you have concerns about how to start his diet...

Good Luck!

I started switching off between oatmeal and rice cereal, and made sure to make it thin,so it was easier to digest. The rice is a little rougher for babies to digest than oats,so if she loves the oatmeal I'd give her more of that. I added a tiny bit of fruit in the cereal,to give it a little flavor. My sons weren't real thrilled with the cereal alone.Try pears and peaches stage one.Bananas can cause constipation,so light on it. I used bananas, when my sons had loose bowels.I introduced veggies, after they got the hang of the cereal and fruit. Have fun,and don't forget the camera...Babies make some of the cutest faces when they first start experiencing food.: ) Best to you and your growing son.

I would start with any of the P's because they are easiest on baby's digestion. Constipation is almost inevitable for breastfed babies and I found that my daughter did best with freshly poded sugar snap peas lightly cooked and blended with its own juice. Also, pear or freshly made raw applesauce is a good starter. I would keep a little blended prunes at hand just in case of constipation. The rice is very hard for babys to digest in the begining.
Best of luck.

They said fruit last because is sweet. Babies will think the vegies are boring if we give them the fruit first.

Hi M.,

Rice cerial! I even make my own. Get a bag of brown rice. Put 1/4 cup in the blender dry for 2 minutes. To cook put a tbls in 1/4 cup water. Wisk for 10 minutes. You can adjust the consistancy w/water or rice. Just make sure it is cooked for 10 minutes. This saves $$ and you are sure your baby is NOT getting all the additives!
