Sports Bra Recommendation?

Hi -

I'm just starting to get back to the gym - today was the first time I've done more than just take some walks w/ the little one. However, I quickly realized that I need to buy a more supportive sports bra. OUCH! :-(

Does anyone have any good recommendations? I am probably a C-cup now (I am nursing) and I want to be able to run in it reasonably comfortably.

Thanks for the help!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the responses. I went to the Title 9 website (I've been to Sports Basement already and had a hard time finding bras that were supportive enough to run in while I was still pregnant) and realized they have several locations in the Bay Area. I went to the Palo Alto store, where the staff was super helpful. Turns out, I would have bought the wrong size if I had bought online. They recommend several bras for me to try on, and kept bringing me more, in various sizes, based on how the bras were fitting. The Maia bra by Moving Comfort ended feeling the best for me. Thanks for all the recommendations.

H.,
I find that Title Nine has a great selection and I have never been disappointed with my sports bras from there. They have a catalog and are also on-line (www.titlenine.com). The sports bras are ranked by "number of barbells" in regards to support. The more barbells the more support. Good luck!

Champion's website has bras categorized by support. I always buy the "Maximum Support" and they work well for me.
They are reasonably prices and ship quickly. If you get on their mailing list, they have bi-annual sales when all sports bras are $20.

There is a company called Title Nine (reffering to a law regarding the equivalency of female sports to male sports) which I think is run by women. They have a catalog, and I'm guessing they must be online, too. In any case, I think they have a lot of sports bra options which are designed by women who didn't like the ones they had tried.

Hi H.,

Go to Fleet Feet - they have a shop downtown on J Street and also one on the corner of Madison and Fair Oaks Blvd. I went there in the same situation when I started running again - you will be amazed how these sports bras fit - perfectly - no bouncing - and they even have straps that adjust(for the fit but they work if you have to nurse, too!). Good luck!

Hi,
I just shopped at Runners Feet on Main St. in Turlock (next to Main St. Footers), and they are going out of business. All their sport bras are either $10 or $20.
Good luck!

I have to say, as a normal C cup up, now DD with nursing, I think the only solution is one I found shocking from girlfriends at the gym years ago - wear more than one bra! (They did it to prevent una-boob) I'm trying a supportive nursing bra under my clothes, then a sports bra from my pre-PG days over top.
I used to work in lingerie, and as someone who fitted bras- I don't like they way they fit when they are the *right* size - so I wear sports bra that is smaller than I should so its more snug. and when I jog I just kinda keep my wrists up near them to help hold them in place :) I know, but I hate the shake! good luck!

Hi
I have tried MANY different sports bra.. all of which never really gave me the comfort and support I was looking for. I finally did this.. I use a sheer or very thin material underwire bra and over it, I wear a cotton sports bra (the kind with no cups built into it) usually made by champion. to some, this may seem like a hassle and too many garments, but in fact if you get a really sheer bra for underneath, the combo is quite suitable. I have about a D cup. The larger sports bras (apart from the actual cup area) were just too big and I felt like my breasts (although somewhat supported) looked so mashed that they looked like one big breast.. oh and what I also don't like about the typical sports bra is that it squishes your chest in such a way that the cleavage is pushed up so much that although it might support you, you have all this junk up top... so IF you wear a v-neck and do a pushup for example, you have all this junk spilling out up top...
whatever you decide, best of luck!!

I'm currently pregnant and my breasts have grown to a DDD, so I needed a really supportive bra for the gym. I ended up ordering a bunch of different sports bras from www.barenecessities.com and I tried them all on, chose one, and shipped the rest back. It was worth the return shipping to be able to choose from several hard-to-find bras. The nice thing about the website is that you can search for specific kinds of bras in your exact size.

I ended up with a no-wire sports bra by a company called Anita. It's not pretty, but it's really supportive for when I'm working out!

Good luck on your search!

Not sure where you live, but there's a place in Sunnyvale called Sports Basement that offers great products at great prices. I recently got a fantastic Champion brand sports bra there that I have loved. They have lots to choose from and have ones that are designed for maximum support. Good luck!

I have not bought these bras for awhile, but they are wonderful and last a long time, but they are expensive. Joyce Sanborn at Bras Etc. who used to be in San Jose is now in Oklahoma. She fit me while she was here, but I have changed sized since and have called and she tells you how to measure and then sends you the bras and if they are not right she will take them back. There are no and have not been for some time any decent bras that really support you. These have a band underneath the breast and the straps are not stretchy so the support comes with the band and the straps, and the support around underneath your breasts. I never wore a sports bra or a nursing bra as these work for both. They have sizes from 32 A to 52 FF. Call her at ###-###-#### and tell her K. Wilson sent you. I hope she is still selling these because I have never found anything as good. Good luck. Let me know if you do this.

While I was nursing I couldn't find anything that worked, so I wore an underwire bra under a sports bra. Once my breasts went back to normal I got a couple of good bras at Target. They have built in support and they hold well. I can't remember what brand they are (and the tag doesn't say) but it has a "C9" on the front of it.

I use the Bali with underwire! Do not be afraid of underwire, if the bra fits right, it should not bother you! Good luck!

Hi! Go to the Lingerie Department at Nordstrom in Walnut Creek. They have a *fit* program. They will size you and get you into a great sports bra. You want to be sure you are in the right bra size since you are nursing. This is a great service and it happens to be free!

hi H....
since a good bra, be it sports or not can set you back at least ~$40.00 and upwards of $120.00, i suggest you go to a store which offers free fittings. most stores that offer fittings, do so for free...macy's, nordstrom, victoria's secret, and if you think the bra they fit you into might be found online at a reduced price tell them so, thank them for their time, and go home and order it, because they might offer you something just as wonderful for you in feel and look (and in the case of a sports bra, purpose)and with a price that doesn't hit you too hard in the pocket book, and that you are more comfortable spending as well as wearing.

good luck,
aline

I really love my Patagonia sports bras because they are supportive, they don't give me a uni-boob, they are pretty, they are soft, and I can easily pull them down at the neck to nurse my kid.

HI! I just recently purchase a Sports Bra and love it! My recommendation for you is Victoria's Secret. However, if that is a bit pricey for you, you can try Sears, Target, Kohl's, Ladies Foot Lockers in the mall.
I hope this helps! Have fun exercising!

I exercised through all 3 kids and while nursing, sometimes when nursing you need to wear two sports bras as things are a little more tender and sensitive. Now that I'm not nursing, I'm back down to one. However you should try them on because the sizes are not always indicative to what the tag says. They should not be too tight, but have enough support. Good luck.
