Hi Moms,

My son is a solely breastfed 5 month old. He spits up a lot, although that has decreased somewhat. I'm totally fine with this, but my question is about his clothes and mine. My mom had said that breastmilk spit up doesn't stain clothes like formula spit up, but I'm now noticing some stains on our clothes. Is this common? Is there any way to get it out?

I used to soak all my baby clothes in oxi-clean baby and tough ones in regular oxi-clean overnight. I have now moved on to BIZ bleach (kids are getting older) and that works really well too.

Good luck!

Are you getting a burp out of him after every feed? This might sound crazy, but he may need you to pat him a bit longer and get a second one. I had a baby nurse show me this and was amazed by how much time was necessary to help some babies remove all their air bubbles. But if you don't dedicate the time, then they lose much of the good milk your body worked so hard to make for him. Hope this helps.

As for the stains, this is a good product:

Mrs. Meyers baby stain remover can be purchased at some Whole Foods locations if you don't want to buy it online.

Unfortunately I think all spit up stains. Try Oxy Clean. That helped me. You should also check out www.BurpieBlocker.com. A great burp cloth that does not fall off your shoulder.

Good luck and happy holidays!

I've had great results with Oxyclean. It gets both the stain and the scent that had made our burp cloths completely unusable.

A., I breastfed 3 boys and found that the spit up, unfortunately, DOES stain. My advice....wear very casual clothes that you don't care about! My babies ruined so many of my shirts, but it is worth it! I found, even when I leaked milk, that it stained my shirts! Good luck!

I am the poster child practically for Dreft-brand stain remover. I swear it gets everything out. I pre-treat, let it sit for 5 minutes, and then wash on as high of a temp as the clothes/colors will allow.

This has worked with me on breast milk stains.

I used to make a paste with unflavored meat tenderizer and water and put it on the spit-up stains, let it set for a few minutes, then wash in Dreft and they came out. It breaks down proteins I think. Good Luck with all the methods used here on this site. I wish this was around when my kids were babies. Now I pass all this great info on to my daughter-in-law.

A.,

Oxyclean works great on "organic" stains. Mix it with hot tap water and let it soak at least over night.

Try cutting dairy out of your diet. My son had horrible reflux. I did an elimination diet and was able to identify that the problem for my son was both dairy and soy. But most folks I know have been able to solve the problem by eliminating dairy. Dairy proteins easily pass through breastmilk and can wreak havoc with a baby's digestive system.

I solely breastfed also and the Dreft worked well for me too. As your baby starts eating whole foods you should give Shout's Ultra Gel a try. It is awesome at getting food stains out, even old set in stains. You can put it on when the stain happens and throw it in the laundry basket and forget about it until you do the next load. I had shirts that I had old greasy (salad dressing type) stains in them I thought I'd only get to use for wearing around the house. I used the Shout Ultra Gel and now I wear those same shirts as if they never had a stain on them. Good luck!

I find that if I spray it as soon as possible with a stain treatment, it helps. Formula definitely stains more but I've seen it with breastmilk too. Truth is, motherhood is messy!! :)

I swear by Spray & Wash for most everything but, because I've been trying to go a more natural, chemical-free route lately, I've also taken to soaking things in Borax or adding it to our wash. Borax has been working just as well also.

try placing your finger below sternum&zyphoid process, and traction toward pubic bone. This helps open up space for stomach etc. its impt to go below zyphoid prcess so as to not hurt it. or just try a couple of fingers above belly button, and traction down. Also my mom said don't bounce after feeding- it makes a milkshake!

Hope someone else can help you better!! Congrats on your baby!

as long as you clean it off asap and stain treat it before you wash, you should be fine.
sounds like your little one is having acid reflux? also, there could be stains because of certain things you are eating? test it, stop eating certain things that may be giving your child reflux or whatever you think might be causing stains, i know italian food does both of those! too bad its my favorite!!

good luck!

My first baby spit up a lot. The first thing that helped with keeping the clothes clean was to keep a bib on him. The only time it came off was when he was sleeping. Bibs were just a part of his "ensemble" everyday and they make some very cute and absorbent bibs. Other than that, if the clothes are white (or close to it) the sun is the best. Put them in bright, direct sunlight and that got most of our clothes bright white again. It didn't seem to be much of an issue for us with the colored clothes, I think it leaves a yellowish colored stain so it was mostly noticeable only on whites. As for stain remover, I am reading the other mom's responses because my usual method does not always work! :)

There is a prewash spray you can get, an Amway product, at we-us.mychoices.biz

There are testimonials from a lot of my friends and myself on how well it works.

It works for me, mother of twins!!

It's been quite a few years for me with spit up stains. But I used Simple Green in the wash with all the spit up and pooped on clothes and it got all stains out.
Might not be as earth friendly as the others..but it sure worked. It was 10 yrs ago...so my memory is fading. :)
