Soy Milk for 1 Year Old

I have a reaction to milk that causes itchy bumps on my upper arms. I have just started my one year old on milk and I am noticing she is having the same reaction. My reaction only occurs when I drink milk... I can eat cheese, yogurt, and ice cream and I don't have issues. My daughter seems to be the same way because she is a big cheese eater and has had no problems with that. I had switched to Silk soy milk for the past few years except when I was pregnant I drank milk for the pregnancy. I of course broke out like crazy while pregnant and breastfeeding, but have recently switched back to the soy milk and my rash is disappearing.

Since milk allergies are inherited, I do not want her to suffer like I have over the years. My question is, is it ok for me to give my daughter soy milk instead of cows' milk? Has anyone else had this issue? I am going to call my ped tomorrow, but wanted some insight from other moms.

TYIA!

Hello Jodi,

My kids have cow milk issues too. I actually mix soy milk and oat milk together for their morning drink. that way they don't get too much soy (estrogen effect). There is such a variety of options. go with what you feel is right and works for you. and kudos to you for recognizing her reactions to the milk. ~C.~

My 21 month old DS has been drinking soy milk since he weaned from the breast. I was told it's just fine and that human babies weren't really intended to drink cow milk anyway. Soy is high in protein and many many people drink it. I buy the vanilla Silk... it tastes much much better. He loves it.

I've used Silk Plus (the one with added DHA - purple top label) on my daughter since she turned one. Our pedi suggested that we give it to her half the time. We didn't have any allergy or intolerance issues - I believe it's better than cow's milk. Depending on your pedi's point of view, they may not be totally supportive. Personally, as long as your getting the right amount of calcium (per another response here), I think it's even better when you look at the nutrition label. Go with you gut and, if you pedi isn't totally supportive, it wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion to make you feel better.

After nursing, I used soy formula for my daughter, and then around 11 months towards her first birthday I started using Silk. She loves it! I sometimes alternate between organic whole milk and the Silk. She drinks both, but definitely has a preference for the Silk, which is fine with me.

Hi Jodi,
My middle child was very "spitty" as a baby and toddler. I switched him to soy milk after formula and had no problems with this transition. Nor did my pedi have any complaints. But, as a nurse i will suggest that you speak with your pedi first.I hope every thing goes well.

My 1 year old has been on soy for 4 months or so because he seems to be intolerant of milk. So, I say go for it as long as your pedi doesn't say something different. You also might try rice milk.

Yes! If you compare the vitamins, minerals, and calcium in Soy milk to regular milk it actually has more. My pediatrician says there is not difference at all-just as healthy.

I switched my son to soy milk just after his one year birthday. He had been on whole milk, and we found out about some food allergies he had and milk was one of them.
Soy milk is ok to give, however, you have to be conscious of the calcium intake. Make sureyou buy soy milk that is "calcium enriched" one cup of who milk has 291mg of calcium, one cup of calcium fortified Soy milk has 300mg of calcium. Learn to read labels!
Blessings,
S.

There are some concerns with giving children soy milk. I would suggest Almond milk. You can find it right next to the soy milk in a box. My little boy loves it.

Both of my sons are allergic to milk. My oldest gets violently ill from milk and my youngest started showing signs when we started him on whole milk after his 1st birthday. We have had them both tested for allergies and unfortuantely they are allergic to the milk and not just lactose intolerant. I would switch to soy and get her tested by your pedi for the allergy. It is a simple blood test. My children can't eat yogurt, cheese, etc. unless it is soy based. My kids both LOVE soy products because it is really all that they know and they are actually getting a lot more protein in their diet.

Hi Jodi, you can make almond milk by yourself if you have a blender. Soak organic almonds overnight in filtered water, rinse it. Put in the blender with filtered water and blend well on high speed, then strain with milk bag or cheese cloth. It's delicious just like this, or you can add natural vanilla w/out alcohol or anything else like banana, strawberry for flavor or maple syrup or soak dates to sweeten the milk. Plane milk will stay in the refrigerator for 2 days, other you need to use right away. No commercial milk can compete with benefits of home made!

P.S.: By the way, search for Carrageenan ingredient information on line, that's the one that makes Silk milk so thicken smooth and likable by many people.
There is a few soy/rice milk products without carrageenan.
