Soy Formula-Fed Baby Starting Solids

When she was a few weeks old my daughter wasn't taking well to the regular Enfamil as it seemed she had a milk protein allergy and was switched to soy. She has done very well on the soy (Prosobee) and is now almost 9 months old and beginning to eat solids. I am not sure if she really has/had a milk allergy or her stomach was just developing overtime. Does anyone have advice on what types of dairy solids I should attempt with her? Some sat yogurt and cheese but I was under the impression that milk should wait until the baby turns 1. Any advice would be great!

What can I do next?

I would continue to give her formula till she's at least one. My son had trouble digesting milk at first, and we kept him drinking smaller amounts of formula until he was about 18 months, although he was into solid food. We introduced milk very slowely. If your ped suspects a food allergy. There are so many good choices for milk subs out there, rice and soy milk are excellent choices. Sometimes kids will react to milk but not cheese and yogurt because the milk proteins are broken down in those products - that was my son's situation.

Oh, almost forgot, check with your ped before giving her freashly cooked eggs or nuts. A lot of times with kids show an early intolarance to milk have other allergies as well. My son is very allergic to all peanuts and tree nuts, and tests positive for eggs on the scratch tests, but he can tolerate them in a cake or cookies.

Hi J.,
My two older daughters both had to be on soy formula but the transition to solids was surprisingly easy. I started them on yogurt and eggs (small bits of scrambled) at about 9 months and introduced pasta at 10 months. If it's a milk allergy you're worried about, I would hold off on introducing cheese until your daughter is a little older. Milk should definitely wait until she's a year though. Introducing these things slowly and over time will help you figure out if she really does have a milk allergy or if she just has trouble digesting lactose based products. I hope this helps. J..

My daughter was drinking soy formula her first year, too. We tried to introduce her to some dairy shortly after her 9 months, and she didnt react very well to it. But by the time she was 12 months, she got better with it. Now she has no problems with regular milk, yogurt, cheese, ice cream. However, she does have a slight reaction to eggs. Not sure if there is any correlation there. But overall, she is a great eater! Good luck! Hope this helps.

Hello, my daughter was also put on soy formula as an infant. She is now 15 months old. When she started with solids she never had any problems with dairy products. Even when I switched her from formula to whole milk there was no problems. She did not eat baby food for long and I started her on regular food and had no problems. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Hello. I switched my daughter to soy formula when she was about 3 weeks old. When she turned one, we started her on soy milk. We put the poor little thing through one blood test and alerigst prick tests. She is officially allergic to milk. She loves soy yougurt and pudding which I find at Whole Foods. I do let her eat frozen waffles, etc which have milk, and thank god she doesn't have any reactions.

Good luck.

Same thing with my son. I started breast feeding, switched to regular formula and ultimately soy. We didn't start him on any milk products until he turned one - and that was at the advice of our pediatrician. He did eat some baby foods that had milk products in them before then - like the jarred mac and cheese and he was fine but we introduced those things slowly. Ask your pediatrican about whether or not you should give milk before a year. Because there were prior issues, I'd wait - give your baby's digestive system some more time to mature and be able to handle the milk. I also think that the main reason for not switching to milk before one was because the baby needs the nutrition of the formula so whatever you do, don't stop the formula without talking to the pediatrician.
