My 2 year old who is always happy to take a bath began crying and screaming a few days ago when we put her in the bath. She was yelling "MY BUTT HURTS!!!!!" and screaming and crying. We thought maybe she was constipated so I gave her more fruits and prune juice with good results. Tonight she did the exact same thing only worse. So I took her out of the tub and inspected her bottom. Well I found a very small tear an inch or so above her anus (maybe from rough play, large BM????) Anyhow, I went on to treat it by applying vasoline and desitine with a Q-tip due to max sensitivity even when I tried to look/inspect area. Does anyone know of a better cream that might make it heal faster, and numb the area. She can not tolerate sitting in the bath. I don't know if I should just use powder, keep it dry, neosporine. PLEASE help...her little butt seems to be in lots of pain. Thanks in advance

So What Happened?

Here is a little up-date. I took my daughter to the doctor. The dr did a full exam and wouldn't you know it my daughter did not even flinch, cry, wiggle, nothing. She just looked at the dr. Well with that the dr said just keep giving her prune juice in case she was constipated. She continued to cry in the bath so I just told her I was going to wash her bottom and she would be ok. After about 3 days of this, me just doing it and getting over it she just kind of stopped the crying behavior. I have started to notice that the complaints of "my butt hurts" or "my potty hurts" always comes about 15-30 minutes prior to a BM. So I have come to the conclusion that she is just more in touch with the feeling for BM and she does not really know how to connect it. I also think that she was a little constipated and maybe that caused pain thus the fear of more pain. With each passing day there are less complaints, less crying, etc. Thanks for all the advice. By the way the dr would not refer us to the GI dr unless she is still complaining about it in another 2 weeks.

You should call your pedi. When my son had an open sore down there, my pedi prescribed Muprocin which is basically a prescription strength Neosporin. If yours doesn't do that I would stick with the Neosporin. I have also found that Bert's Bees is the best Diaper Cream in general.

I would definitely call your doctor. However, I agree
Dr Smiths is awesome, I even use it on my 4 yr old after
he has a big bowel movement & complains his butt hurts.
SOmetimes other diaper creams can actually sting a babies
bottom like Desitin(I forget the agent that's in it, but read about it recently). Good luck

Put a little anitibiotic ointment on it and try to keep her bottom as dry as possible. I know it's difficult but when she's at home maybe let her go without a diaper for a while. The idea is to keep the wound as clean and dry as possible to let it heal. It may take a few days but if it takes any longer or gets any bigger I would suggest seeing your pediatrician.

Call your doctor I don't think you should be putting anything unless prescribed on an open tear.
