Son's Underwear Preference

My 14 year old son and I were shopping for new clothes last week at a Marshall's store. He hates to shop for clothes but I dragged him along. When we were in the underwear department, I had mentioned to him that he might want to pick out some new undies. Normally, he picks out some regular colored briefs. I also will pick him up some hanes briefs at Walmart However, on this trip, he picked out some bikini briefs. He told me that's what he would like to start wearing. I thought at first it was kind of weird but maybe I'm overrationalizing.

As for other parents out there, what type of underwear does your sons wear? Have they ever wore bikini briefs? Is that what guys are now wearing?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My son said he would like for me to buy him some more of these bikini undies. He has a whole drawer full of hanes fashion briefs if anybody wants or need them. LOL. I looked at a local Walmart and Target but cannot find the type he is wearing. I looked online and saw they are kind of pricey. Anyone else know of where I could find this type of bikini undies? His are of the jockey brand. Thanks.

HA...I had to google 'Mens Bikini Underwear' to see what you meant. Okay. I've seen those before.

My 8yo prefers commando.

Sigh.

But he'll 'deal' with boxerbriefs when he has to (shorts, baseball pants, etc.). We've gotten all 3 'normal' ;) kinds (boxers, briefs, boxerbriefs) and those are the "best" for him. He just can't deal with getting "stuck" to himself. And he has NO shame in unsticking himself when wearing underwear (deep sigh). So commando it usually is. Shrugs. It's not like his clothes are ever clean enough from a day's playing to rewear clothes anyway.

LOL... We just spent 3 weeks in the hospital and kiddo was *digging* that underwear aren't 'allowed'.

LOL Gailski B, socialist agenda...? I'm as liberal as they come but I have no dastardly master plan about what type of underwear children should wear. Briefs, bikinis, boxers-- I think I'll bow out and let the guys choose!

It really depends on your area I guess. I asked my husband and he said, "It depends on what the other guys in the locker room are wearing." As for my boys, too young, but my nephews (13 and 15) they wear boxer briefs or regular boxers. And of course they all have to be Abercrombie or Aeropostale...

I have a son and I didn't know there WAS a bikini brief option.
My son is 15 and wears boxer briefs. Once in a while, regular boxers, but mostly the boxer briefs.
Everyone is different as far as what's comfortable for them, but my son won't wear regular briefs let alone bikini style. I don't even wear bikini style panties because I always feel like they're falling off.
If you bought him some, let him try them. He might not like them as much as he thought he would, but you never know. Depending on his body shape, they may be comfortable to him. Maybe that's what the boys in The Hills are wearing now. I don't know.
He'll like them or he won't.

Mine wears the boxer briefs.
Used to wear regular briefs, but at around 10, saw the boxer briefs and decided he liked the "extra" coverage. He's happy.

His father (the Ex) wears bikini briefs - he says they are cooler.

I don't think it matters as long as they are clean. LOL

Could he be trying to follow the 'in' crowd? Seems to be that the new in thing is lip /ear piercing, guys wearing huge diamond earrings, pink, purple, lots of jewelry like many rings , bracelets and neclaces, and being more feminine in attitudes and mannerisms.
There is a social "push" in media and TV (and young society in general) to get males to accept more feminine attire and attitudes. Social society is pushing to BLUR gender roles. They want a genderless society. They want to get to a society with no marriage. And no children from marriages either.
Our youth should be enlightened on the socialist agenda so they don't fall for it.

The men in my family have worn pretty much the whole stratta of regular people underwear at some point or another. I wouldn't worry about it. If it bugs him, he'll try something else. Maybe he doesn't like bunched legs.

If he's comfortable and they are not being shown outside of locker room or home, I guess I wouldn't think twice about it. I had a good laught at the post below turning it into a "socialist agenda". Must be Pres. Obama's fault.....giggle.

They are much much more common these days. Quite frankly look much more comfortable to me. My son wears boxers, this is me shaking me head. Anyone with men that wears boxers you will eventually get an eye full. But his body whatever he wants.

I found this article describing men's underwear - http://www.news-fire.com/there-is-more-to-mens-underwear-... - boxers are very loose fitting, briefs (tidy whities) are a bit tighter, boxer briefs are in the middle, and bikini briefs are the most supportive. Could be he feels the need for extra support. Perhaps dad wears them? Or other family member he looks up to? Or he just likes the style/colors better? Or he may want to wear something completely different than his dad - being his own "man".

So I've heard of going "Commando" by not wearing underwear, but now there's a new trend wearing bikini briefs - going "Socialist"? LOL!

My oldest always wore boxers. My middle wore briefs but changed to boxers because he likes to sleep in those instead of pj's so it made things easier but in the summer he just goes commando. My youngest would only wear boxer briefs.

My oldest (16) wears only boxer briefs, my other two (9 and 4) wear both briefs and boxer briefs.

I'm all for letting them wear what they want as long as they change pairs frequently. I was going to say regularly, but my 9yo thinks once a week is enough and that's not regularly enough for me! :-)

Please relax! Just let your kid be. He trusts you enough to tell you his likes and dislikes, that is awesome!
Who cares what kind of underwear your son likes? Why does everything have to be so completely standardized and normed? By the way, briefs, hot pants, pink underwear etc. are totally the norm in Europe, where boys aren't so freaking scared to be labeled as gay all the time.

I just wanted to thank you for the glimpse into my future. I am now guessing for myself which of my boys will do bikini briefs/commando - the one who strips down to his diaper almost as he crosses the threshhold into the house, no matter who is visiting, is my guess... ;)

At least he's wearing underwear! My 8 yo 90% of the time doesn't put his on! I have to check before he goes to school to make sure he's got them on and have to tell him to put them on! So pick your battles and let him wear what he wants, who cares?! :o)
