Son Has Eczema

My 2-year old son has had problems with eczema since he was 6 months old or so. Recently, he has had some flare-ups on his scalp. He scratches it so much, that he has a bald spot. He scratches behind his ears so much, that he draws blood. The itching causes him to wake up many times a night as well. Does anyone have any suggetions for keeping the eczema under control? I am so tired of the steroid creams. I would much rather keep the flare-ups to a minimum by using effective moisturizers and body washes on a daily basis.

I would really appreciate some advice.

What can I do next?

S.,

I ordered Freederm HC online and got it in on Sat. In just 3 days the results have been great! NO itching! My 2y/o has eczema all over and constantly has bleeding sores. She hasn't scratched in 2 days! I'm also going to try NAET treatments.

I completely feel your pain. My son is also 2 and has to deal with eczema since infancy. It wasn't until he was around 1 that it started to get worse. I will tell you first that the expensive creams and oatmeal creams made him worse. What worked for me is he baths in Dove body wash for sensitive skin and I use Johnson's shampoo (the yellow one) because both are pH balanced. My pediatrician told me to use those. He also has a prescription cream for flare ups, but using the body wash/shampoo keeps it under control. Also, I use Eucerin lotion on his skin after each bath and more often if needed. The other thing I realized is I was dressing him too warmly. His skin needs to breath and too much clothing will hurt that. That's the problem too. Flare ups in the summer because it's hot, and flare ups in the winter because it's dry. The skin needs to stay cool and moisturized. That's what was recommended and worked for me. good luck. I know it's frustrating, I just wanted to cry each time I saw scratch marks from my son clawing himself. Wish you the best.

My daughter started having eczema around 4 months and we did steroid creams when it would flare up. Inbetween flare ups we would use Aquaphor on her face and Aveeno on her body for wash and lotion. I am not knowledgable on all the causes of eczema, from what I understand sometimes they just have it just because. But we did find out that our daughters was directly related to a peanut & egg allergy. We had her tested at a year and when we cut these things out they went away. Of course it's back now on he ankles and wrists, so I'm not sure if that's just because she has sensitive skin and all the allergens in the air this spring have affected that or if it's another food allergy she's developed or if it's just eczema just because.

My son also has a minor case of eczema, his doctor told us to put Aquaphor on the flare-ups 2-3 times a day. She also said to use a mild bath soap and lotion, nothing with any scents or added chemicals. She also recommended trying to give him childrens zyrtec at night b4 bed, b/c eczema can be a reaction to allergens which are very high in the summer time. I hope this helps, just try one thing at a time to eliminate what doesnt work and find the thing or things that will.

My son has dealt with eczema almost his whole life, but we do have it under control. We wash the whole family's laundry (bedding, clothes, towels) in ALL Free and Clear. He uses Aveeno baby wash and cream (not the lotion, the cream is thicker). What we learned was to keep his skin hydrated (which means lotion 2x a day) and when we put cream on to put it on thick. Also, in the summer if he goes swimming we wash him as soon as we can and put lotion on him. He had a flare up after we used sunscreen and we now use Aveeno sunscreen and have had no problems. We also found out that he had minor food allergies and if we avoid those things, he does a lot better. Also, as soon as he starts complaining of his skin itching, he starts to get oatmeal baths (once again, we use Aveeno, b ut the adult one) We do have a tube of the steriod cream, but we haven't had to use it in a loooooong time. I have also heard that an Omega-3 supplement can help. I don't know if that is true, but my since my son has started to eat salmon about once a week, we haven't had a trace of eczema.
I know it is painful to watch....good luck.

Does your son drink milk? My eczema and my daughter's is because of dairy. You might try getting him off dairy products, milk especially. Mine flares up like mad when I drink milk and not as bad with other dairy.

Other than that, I use Burt's Bees body wash for her and lubriderm lotion.

My daughter is in the same boat. For her scalp we'll use T/Gel. It's not tear-proof so be careful, use only a little and every other day for only a week. There is also a cheap version by using 1 part glycerin and 4 part J&J baby shampoo (smells better than T/gel). I've used both on my daughter and myself when I was younger. Also not washing their hair every day but skipping a day.

I also agree with the advice of Aveno lotion. My duaghter's doctor has also given us a prescription lotion that helps - and the ALL free and clear for laundry.

Good luck!

My youngest likewise has eczema which has flared up from time to time. I use Huggies Shea Butter baby wash and lotion. I do use the Triamcinolone cream when it gets bad, but it is under control the majority of the time by keeping him VERY lotioned. Good luck...I know it is frustrating!

I would suggest using Renew...it works wonders. I would also think about getting the chemicals (and toxins) out of your house and off (and out of) his body. I use chemical and toxin free products, which means you are healthier and safer. The store I shop from has everything that you use, need and run out of every day...it's as easy as switching stores. The products work great and I've seen a huge difference since starting to use them over 2 yrs ago.

Please give me a call or email me (and I can call you) and we can discuss it. I just know they'll help your son out!!
