Should We Get a Convection Oven?

Hello, we are about to start a kitchen remodel project and have picked out our appliances. The oven we like can come with or without convection and the price difference is $300 or so, so not chump change. I've never used convection before so I'm not sure how often I would use it and I know most recipes aren't tailored with timing instructions for convection. Do you think the $300 is worth it?

What can I do next?

Yes, it is definately worth it. Convection is not just good for baked goods. Anything you bake (chicken, pot roast etc) is wonderful. You do approximately half the time also with a convection oven, so it saves you there as well.

I love my convection oven for the same reasons as the previous posts. But for $300 more??? I don't know if I would pay that much more just for convection. Sounds to me like you need to check into a different brand that does not charge that much more for convection.

I love my convection oven. I use it for so many different things. The newer ones have a temp and time conversion. It is not that hard to figure out. The best part is turkey at Thanksgiving, 5 sheets of cookies at the same time during Christmas. Baking a three layer cake, bake all three pans at the same time.
There are certain dishes it does dry out. I cover a lot of things and then remove the covering in the last few minutes of the cooking. For three hundred dollars you won't regret it. In a lot ovens now you also can get a warming drawer in the bottom. I don't have room for a large warming drawer in my cabinet space and this has worked out amazing.
Consumer reports magazine just ranked appliances in last month’s issue. You would be surprised at some of the expense brands that got passed up by cheaper ones. I do a lot of research before I buy anything that expensive.
Good Luck

At our last house we got a convection oven, but it was on clearance when we bought it, so barely more than a regular one. I appreciated it when baking the most, so if you do a lot of baking, it may be worth it. But I'd definitely shop around. I'm not sure I'd pay $300 extra if I'd be shopping for a new one. Though I would be tempted now that I have a little one, I'd love it if I could bake a batch of cookies all at once!

I don't have much new to say other than to echo the satisfaction I have in my convection oven. Lower the temp by 25 degrees and shorten cooking time by 15 minutes - then check. So easy! And the main advantages as others have said it how evenly everything is cooked.

I don't ever use the regular oven setting - convection only! If you can swing the extra $$$, I'm sure you won't regret it!

Save your money... unless you are a big cook you most likely won't ever use it. We built a home a few years ago and I bought a convection double oven... you actually have to convert cooing times, etc.. I've never once used the feature. Again... save your money! Good luck!

I purchased a microwave/convection oven a few years ago and I just love it. I didn't know if I would but I have a licensed day care in my home and it is so nice because it is up high and you don't have to worry about the children getting burned. My daughter just graduated from high school and she said that when she moves that is what she is going to get cause it is so much easier to clean than a big oven. All you have to do is adjust the temperature 25 degrees less than what it says for a oven and it will turn out just fine. I think it is well worth the 300 dollars more that it costs.

I've had one for a year - it came with our house, and have maybe used it once. I'm just sticking to what I know. If more recipes came with convection oven instructions, I'd probably use it more.

Absolutely!! In our house that we lived in previous to where we live now, we had a convection oven and I LOVED it....to say the least! I would give a lot to have that back too! I know a lot of recipes don't have instructions for convection ovens, BUT with a convection oven (at least with my experience) you do not necessarily need to know how long to cook things...as long as you keep an eye on it. With our oven there were many settings you could pick from---with meat you could pick the weight and type and it would pick how long to cook it for you. Same with veg, pizza, and many other foods. With a convection your food will cook faster and a LOT more evenly and thoroughly! I highly recommend a convection, and I really think that after a few weeks of using it, it will be a no brainer. Good luck!

We have a gas convection oven, and I LOVE it. (Previously we had a regular gas oven/range.) It took some time to adjust for the temp/time differences... I have found I typically need to lower the temp by 25 degrees, and/or shorten cooking time by a few minutes.

So if you bake a lot and can afford the price difference, then I'd say go for it.

We had a convection oven in our other house that we lived in and we loved it. We plan to get one again when we do our kitchen remodel in the house we are in now. If you are a baker and like to cook, you will appreciate the way the convection oven cooks so evenly and quickly. I'd say get it!
