My daughter is 3 and just moved into a toddler bed.. I think it is time to decorate her room. I am considering wallpaper or rag painting. Which would be better and more durable.. which would likely last longer before we needed a new theme... I thought that if we did rag painting it might last until she was 10ish and wanted a teenage theme..

I did not want to pick some very kiddish wallpaper just somethng with color..

Her favorite colors are green blue and purple... any ideas on how to use her colors without making the room look to crazy??

I selected bedding taht has light purple and light green in it...just flowers no characters...

What can I do next?

I've never seen a kids' room with wallpaper that wasn't picked at and torn in places if the child was more than a year old! I'd stick with paint! You can always paint over when you need to!

Hello there - I just spent the last 10 days decorating my 12 year olds bedroom so feel a bit of an expert. Also, I messed up with my 15 year olds room seven years ago - I put a Harry Potter border around it and now it's way too young for him and needs to be redone. I would go for paint definitely instead of wallpaper. What about putting a darker purple on one wall and lighter ones on the others. Or if there's a chair rail, a darker color underneath with a lighter one on top. I put a navy blue underneath my sons chair rail and a light gray/blue above, with the chair rail and windows painted an off white gloss - it looks great and my son slept in his room for the first time last night - very exciting. I'm exhausted though. Sorry to waffle on but I guess you brought up a subject close to my heart at the moment. Best of luck - Alison

lisa ; well if ou really want to rag roll it, paint the room one color and rag roll one wall with the other two colors ? when my neice came to live with me we painted her room with polka dots large ones, just on one wall, we used bowls to circle them with a pencil and then flled them in with paint, you can take her flowers on her bed, trace them and also put them on the wall or one one wall, you can also paint trim anotehr color, or you can paint the room one color then put a stripe on the wall outlined with the other color, there is no end to what you can do with paint, or for a cute effect since you have green and blue, and purple, you can paint the top part of the walll blue, like the sky , then the lower part of the wall green and you can put purple flowers in the green part, maybe with yellow centers, and then you can buy the glow in dark stars and put them on her celing for an outdoorsy feeling, either way have fun and enjoy hope some of these ideas help, D. s

I personally would go with painting, only because it's easy enough to paint over. With wallpaper, when you go to change it you should really take the wallpaper off - which, is still a lot of work. I've never done rag painting, not sure if you could get a tied died look or not, which seems to be coming back "in" again. Another option would be to do one of the colors in trim, one for the majority of the walls and then the other one as a contrast color on one wall (typically the smaller wall). Just some thoughts.

I recently let my 4 year old son pick out a color to paint the walls in his room. After I got done painting, I let him choose the peel and stick stickers that he liked which matched his bedspread, the theme being Thomas the Train. It turned out cute. You could check out a website like roommatespeelandstick.com to select a theme. I'm not a huge fan of wallpaper since it is time consuming to get it down and kids tend to destroy it over time.

Just my 2 cents,

M.

Unless you are an expert on rag painting, you can get a job that looks really cheap and messy. My suggestion would be to take the colors from her bedding, and paint light pastels of all the colors on each wall. For instance, one wall would be blue, one greeen, and one purple, you could also add yellow. To not get the "crazy" look, go with the lighter colors. Over time, it does give you ways to change the room with bedding and accessories rather than painting by choosing a new dominate color. Another inexpensive way to decorate is with a product called Wallies...They are vinyl patterns that you put on the wall. Easy to remove over time to change with growing years. Very fun.... If you would like additional assistnace, or to purchase the Wallies, you can call me at ###-###-####. K. A&B Wallcoverings & Interiors. Good Luck!!

I think rag panting looks tacky...just my opinion :-D

What about doing one wall in a mural...a flower garden with green grass and flowers the background wall can be a nice pale sky blue. You can find flower stencils at any home improvment store.

Hello! WHen my daughter was this age, I painted her room light blue and then copied the flower pattern from her bedding onto one wall. I used acrylic paints from Michaels to paint the flowers similar colors to the bedding. I also made cloud valances out of foamcore, quilt batting and white felt. Then I humg a window box inside under the window for her to store her treasures.
The room was beautiful and she stayed with the theme until we moved.
Hope this helps!

Here's what I've done.....paint the room a fairly neutral color that will last.....find graphics of the theme needed to pull it together and print them on clear sticker paper.....attach graphics to wall. When you change themes, peel off the stickers and start with another theme.
Went through Beatrix Potter and Thomas in the nursery before moving my son to another bedroom - Star Wars with those glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling, 3-D collages of Lego Star Wars things in frames, custom pillows, etc.

Hi Lisa,

I love your request.....we did this when our daughter was little and yes - the paint room lasted until she was 10.....here's an idea for you......

I would paint the entire room in an eggshell finish, a super soft sage green....(not quite mint)....then I would rag roll the walls in another super soft shade of lavender....(too dark of lavender will age the room and your girl too fast).....then I would introduce an ice blue into the mix, using a flat finish----however----the ice blue is to be painted on the 'ceiling' of her room! This softens the light in her room and makes it a very comfortable environment for her.

You can then check out some of the 'wall clings' (similar to giant colorforms) at Babies'R'Us, Michael's or JoAnn's....and see if they have flowers or animals or some other character(s) that your daughter enjoys.

I trust that this info is helpful or at least gets the 'creative juices' flowing. Have a great time working on your daughters room.....let her help too...even if it is only a 'dry' paintbrush....it will give her a sense of ownership of her room...thus creating a reason to take good care of it.

HI Lisa,
I sell Uppercase Living, which is similar to some of the other suggestions you have received for vinyl wall art. Only Uppercase living is easier and much more durable than the others. You can go to my website http://raeann.uppercaseliving.net and view the product. If you are interested I can even mail you a catalog. The order will be shipped directly to you. You can even create your own custom expression if you wish. Prices are very good and I think you will like the quality also. Expressions are fully removable but not reusable. It looks as if someone has actually painted these on your wall. At the very least check it out to see if this is something for you. There is even a kids room section. My kids have it in both of their rooms and they love it.
