We are moving to Kansas City in Spring 2009 and I have heard horror stories about movers. Does anyone have any suggestions of movers they have used to move from one state to another? Thanks!

L., when I moved here from Los Angeles, I rented a U-Haul truck and hired movers on both ends to pack and unpack. It was really inexpensive and they did a great job of packing and unpacking the truck. You just go to U-Move.com and they have a full list of movers and how much they charge. My nanny's husband is actually a mover here, so if you would like him to help on this end, I am sure he would be happy to do so. I am having him move me in a couple months. Clearly you will need someone to drive the truck to Kansas, so that is something to consider. If you have a company paying your relocation, then you should use one of the nationwide lines, but if money is a consideration, definitely check this out. Send me a personal email if you want my nanny's husbands info. Good luck!

sorry, no suggestions about moving companies because I sold off all of my furniture before I moved here since I moved in with my then-boyfriend. I just shipped my car and loaded it up.

but............. I wanted to say congrats to your move to KC.. that's where I grew up... it is very beautiful there, I just don't miss the very cold weather

I used Allied also when we moved from CA. They weigh the truck so there are no surprises at the end of the trip, you know exactly what you are paying for. Also, when they came to load the truck, the two guys actually RAN back and forth until it was done. I couldn't believe how great they were! I think the cost was between 3k-4k but we had TONS of stuff and the truck was FULL! So definately use them. Good luck to you and best wishes in your new home!

My suggestion would be Allied. When we moved from CA to AZ back in 1998, my husband's company hired them to move us. I don't know what the price range is, but if you can afford, I'd say go for it. They told us to just clean the house, put everything where you want it, and they would come in with boxes and pack it, then load it. It took about two hours, and when they were done, they loaded our little car onto the back of it so we could have my in laws pick us up to go to the airport for our flight. While we waited for them, we did last minute cleaning of the house. It worked like a charm! They suggested that we load the car with immediate need items such as toys and other helpful items for my family (my kids were 7, 6 and 3.5. They came after two days to the hotel we were in and offloaded the car. When we found our house, they came and unloaded the pre-marked boxes into the correct rooms, then put together our beds and placed our furniture where we wanted it. They were courteous, polite and very efficient. I'd highly recommend them! Good luck!

We used United Van Lines when we moved from Oregon and we were really happy with them. We had a little issue with the seperate movers that were going to move our car (they were cheaper) and United offered since they had room in our van to just move the car in as well for the same price as what the unsheltered mover was going to charge. We were really happy with their services
