Seeking Moms with Babies in Their First Year for "Playdates"

My friend is the mother of twin 8 month olds (boy and girl), and lives on the Upper West Side. She is feeling a bit isolated, babies are entering stranger anxiety phase, and she would love some women in the 'hood with whom she could socialize, especially weekends when she is alone with babies. She belongs to a synagogue but there are no other babies there and is unable to orchestrate visiting other ones to check them out. She would prefer just networking this way and seeing if someone else is out there seeking company. Tea, anybody?

What can I do next?

Hi -- I don't know of someone in that age group, BUT I think even moms with one child in a two parent household struggle with this. I know I felt isolated. I strongly recommend that she join a twins group (or possibly a single mother's group). She can try searching on meetup, via the JCC or just googling UWS or Manhattan Mother of Twins. Rutgers Church has a group just for parents (no caregivers) and maybe her nanny can help her logistically get there if it's not near there. I ultimately made friends through preschool/daycare, so if she can afford it a twos program would help her network. It takes a while!

My children are a bit older but here are some thoughts: there are so many options particularly on the Upper West Side. Aside from the obvious -- sign up for a class ANYWHERE, do a drop in at the JCC they have them frequently and don't require commitment, go to one of numerous twins groups, attend one of the (now) numerous new Mom luncheons, take the nanny (or one of the babies at a time) and go to Reel Moms. Join the single mom's by choice on line group and find some folks through that. There are so many people out there! Good luck; the beginning is tough.
