My husband and I are looking to take a vacation around November. We will be taking our 5-month-old boy with us. This is our first trip with our baby, so we are not sure what to expect. Can anyone suggest a good vacation spot in the U.S. with sightseeing, etc. that is fun and convenient when you have a baby? Any travel tips would be appreciated too! Thanks!

Thank you for all the suggestions! We are still planning our trip, but this gives me some great ideas and tips for traveling with the little one.

I'd avoid places with snow unless you intend to just rent a cabin and stay put b/c it's hard to push a stroller in the snow. California (San Francisco, etc.) is always nice... I was on vacation in NYC in December and although a bit chilly it was a blast -- took my son then)... there are plenty of places to go and have a good time.... don't try to plan too much b/c they'll get over stimulated with all the new thigns to look at... I'd try www.vrbo.com to find a place to stay as well so that you can prepare meals/snacks/etc at your own pace rather than having to wait for a restaurant to serve you... esp when you're working around nap schedules...

You definitely want to stay near the sightseeing or directly onsite (i.e. Disney). You want to be close to "home" for naps, etc. Too much travel time between where you stay and what you want to see can ruin a trip with a small child.
We took my 6 mo old to Disney World with us. We had my in-laws along so we took turns on some of the attractions, but there's also a lot to do and see without rides.
It's a good idea to bring a couple books to read or plan on renting movies or pay-per-view. There will likely be some down time when the baby just needs to rest and you'll want something to occupy yourself. A hotel room or suite with regrigerator, microwave and/or kitchenette is the best way to go.

I would go somewhere sunny, where you can stroll around with the baby and see the sights. Los Angeles has a ton of museums and entertaining parks.... I would never live there again, but visiting LA can be fun. And there's the beach too. The beaches often are bordered by very long walking/biking strips, great for pushing strollers and the piers (Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Malibu) have great food and shops. Venice is amuzing too. But remember it's LA and you need to watch your purse in Venice. It's rowdy. Hermosa/Redondo/Manhattan are very family friendly. Hermosa has the Comedy Club where Jay Leno used to practice his monologues for the Tonight Show. Not sure if he still does that, but you'd have to find a sitter, no kids allowed. It'd be fun to stay at a hotel on the beach, go to museums, Olvera Street, Chinatown, La Brea Tar Pits... and eat great food!

My son was about the same age when we went with him to Santa Fe New Mexico...It was great. I can recommend the place we stayed if you like...but you can walk around the town..eat great food...drive up into the mountains...books something at the 7 waves spa ....and cozy up in the room at night with the nice night are and fireplace!! :-)

Hi, we took a Caribbean cruise when our second son was 9 months old. There was no child care for children under the age of 2, even though our travel agent said there would be. I would suggest not taking a cruise, unless you are okay with having the baby with you 24/7. We typically go to the beach. You can relax on a blanket under an umbrella, bring plenty of toys for the baby to be interested in. Travel tip would be to make sure you pack at least two outfits per day for the baby, and 10+ diapers per day. Hope this helps!

Hi K.,
My husband and I took our then 6 month old to San Antonio. We stayed on the riverwalk which was so convienient. We used a Bjorn carrier and our son was on our front faceing out. It was great because anywhere you go that is crowded, a stroller can be a pain especially with all the stairs. There is lots to there and easy to get back to your room if your son needs a nap. If you fly anywhere be sure to take a blanket onboard, the airline blankets are reused several times before washing and are pretty grose. Good luck.

I agree with April, I have used www.vrbo.com a few times in the past to find a good rental house to stay in while away. But I also have gone up to Turner Falls in OK a couple times, and it's really nice there. There are cabin rentals at the park or in the vicinity of the park, you can check it out here: www.turnerfallspark.com.
