I just had blood work done and my thyroid was high--not sure what to do!! I was hoping to find some "natural" or alternative methods/advice on regulating it. I'm having a lot of trouble sleeping...

What can I do next?

Hi J. - After I had my son, I developed thyroid problems too. Try to find an endocrinologist near you as soon as you can. Possibly, they can help you before you need to go on medication like I did. Currently, I am taking Armour, which is a "natural" medication, as opposed to Synthroid, which is the synthetic version. I'm not sure that it is working, but I've only been on it for two months - I may be switching to the Synthroid. But my sister in law, who also has Hypothyroidism, had lent me two books - The Thyroid Diet (Mary J Shoman) and Living Well With Hypothyroidism (same author). Maybe they can help you as well. Good luck!

Please do not neglect to have a treatment. Look for an endocrinologist. This disfunction will be affecting your bones and in the future also the treatment available to you if your bones became thinner. Your sleep is already affected. You may have your skin dried, be losing hair.... Don't be scared. It is not the idea as I write to you. Just take good care of your glandes....Do not regret it in the future.
I don't have the information you asked for. Sorry.
The best.

Hi J.,

I highly reccommend Dr. Jack Tohme in Ridgewood. FYI_ Take a book or plan to go and leave for a bit as the office wiat is usally around an hour. When I go I end up going to lunch with my Mom/friend. It may be tricky with a child. I have not been since having my first baby 5 1/2 weeks ago. His p# ###-###-#### and address is 265 Ackerman Ave
Ridgewood, NJ 07450. He is a great MD after being on Levoxyl. He is a very good MD, but I am not sure if there is any "natural or alternative methods. I think once it is on the fritz then it is up to your own body. However, if anyone would know I think he would be able to point you in the right direction. I was diagnosed with hoshimotos back in march of 07 and was put on levoxyl and was able to get pregnant in May. If I had not been diagnosed I would not have been able to get pregnant. Also after having my daughter I think that my thyroid issue is less or may be self correcting itself if that is possible as my medication never had to be increased during the pregnancy which is unusual. Good luck!!!!

Hi J.,
I'm new to Mamasource! I have developed hypothyroidism after having half of my thyroid removed b/c of a complex cyst that was on it. I have done alot of research and I read alot of the responses to your question. You MUST get an endicrinologist first. I go to Dr. Josephine Jasper in Clifton, NJ. SHe is wonderful and very good in her craft. You definitely have to be on a thyroid medicine to regulate your thyroid but you can also take vitamins and use alternative medicine to support your thyroid along w/ the thyroid medicine. I currently take Levoxyl and I use acupuncture. My levels have been stable and I feel great. One last thing, if you have to take thyroid medicine regardless if it is Synthroid, Levoxyl, etc. make sure it is a brand name not a generic b/c the generic brands are not as effective! Also get the books that were recommended in the other responses such as The Thyroid Diet and Living w/ HypoThyroidism. I have both and they were great resources! Hope this helps =)

I'm hypothyroid - so my advice would probably be opposite of what you need. Interesting you mentioned trouble sleeping though as I think mine is up a bit more than it should be and ironically I am on the lowest dose of thyroid hormone I've ever been on. The natural things would all be to increase you - iodine, hormones etc. Not sure what I would suggest otherwise. Where are you located? If you don't find an endocrinologist you are happy with a good internist would probably help.

synthroid saved my life....I see a wonderful endocrinolgist in NYC. I know that there are "holistic" remedies but thyroid irregularties are very serious. After going on synthroid my life came back to me. I had been sooo cranky and didn't know it.
